  • Effects of alum dosage on the particle growth were investigated by monitoring particle counts in a rapid mixing process. Kaolin was used for turbid water sample and several other chemicals were added to adjust pH and ionic strength. The range of velocity gradient and mixing time applied for rapid mixing were $200{\sim}300sec^{-1}$ and 30~180 sec, respectively. Particle distribution in the synthetic water sample was close to the natural water where their turbidity was same. The number of particles in the range of $10.0{\sim}12.0{\mu}m$ increased rapidly with rapid mixing time at alum dose of 20mg/L, however, the number of $8.0{\sim}9.0{\mu}m$ particles increased at alum dose of 50mg/L. The number of $14.0{\sim}25.0{\mu}m$ particles at alum dose of 20mg/L was 10 times higher than them at alum dose of 50mg/L. Dominant particle growth was monitored at the lower alum dose than the optimum dose from a jar test at an extended rapid mixing time(about 120 sec). The number of $8.0{\sim}14.0{\mu}m$ particles was lower both at a higher alum doses and higher G values. At G value of $200sec^{-1}$ and at alum dose of 10-20mg/L, residual turbidity was lower as the mixing time increased. But at alum dose above 40mg/L and at same G value, lower residual turbidity occurred in a short rapid mixing time. Low residual turbidity at G value of $300sec^{-1}$ occurred both at lower alum doses and at shorter mixing time comparing to the results at G value of $200sec^{-1}$.

  • Micro/nano-sized L $a_{0.6}$S $r_{0.4}$Co $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ particles are considered to improve oxygen permeability in highly selective inorganic oxygen separation membrane. A L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$G $a_{0.6}$F $e_{0.4}$ $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ membrane with perovskite structure is fabricated by a conventional solid-state reaction. As the oxygen permeation flux of the L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$G $a_{0.6}$F $e_{0.4}$ $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ membrane was lower than commercial gas separation membranes, we coated the L $a_{0.6}$S $r_{0.4}$Co $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ particles to enhance the oxygen permeation flux. It has been demonstrated that the effective area of reactive free surface is an important factor in determining the effectiveness of the introduction of coating layer for oxygen permeation. The introduction of micro/nano L $a_{0.6}$S $r_{0.4}$Co $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ particles was very effective for increasing oxygen flux, as the flux was as much as 2 to 6 times higher than that of an uncoated L $a_{0.7}$S $r_{0.3}$G $a_{0.6}$F $e_{0.4}$ $O_{3-}$$\delta$/ membrane.\delta$/ membrane.>/ membrane.brane.

  • The binary mixture consists of two types of granular media with different physical attributes and sizes, which can be characterized by the percentage of large granules by weight (P) and the particle size ratio (${\alpha}$). Researchers determine that two thresholds ($P_S$ and $P_L$) exist for the peak shear strength of binary mixtures, i.e., at $P{\leq}P_S$, the peak shear strength is controlled by the small granules; at $P{\leq}P_L$, the peak shear strength is controlled by the large granules; at $P_S{\leq}P{\leq}P_L$, the peak shear strength is governed by both the large and small granules. However, the thresholds of binary mixtures with different ${\alpha}$ values, and the explanation related to the inner details of binary mixtures to account for why these thresholds exist, require further confirmation. This paper considers the mechanical behavior of binary mixtures with DEM analysis. The thresholds of binary mixtures are found to be strongly related to their coordination numbers $Z_L$ for all values of ${\alpha}$, where $Z_L$ denotes the partial coordination number only between the large particles. The arrangement structure of the large particles is examined when P approaches the thresholds, and a similar arrangement structure of large particles is formed in both 2D and 3D particle systems.

  • Background: The objective of this study was to place bone graft materials in cranial defects in a rabbit model and compare their bone regenerating ability according to the size and density of demineralized dentin matrix (DDM). Methods: We selected nine healthy male rabbits that were raised under the same conditions and that weighed about 3 kg. Two circular defects 8 mm in diameter were created in each side of the cranium. The defects were grafted with DDM using four different particle sizes and densities: 0.1 mL of 0.25- to 1.0-mm particles (group 1); 0. 2 mL of 0.25- to 1.0-mm particles (group 2); 0.1 mL of 1.0- to 2.0-mm particles (group 3); and 0.2 mL of 1.0- to 2. 0-mm particles (group 4). After 2, 4, and 8 weeks, the rabbits were sacrificed, and bone samples were evaluated by means of histologic, histomorphometric, and quantitative RT-PCR analysis. Results: In group 1, osteoblast activity and bone formation were greater than in the other three groups on histological examination. In groups 2, 3, and 4, dense connective tissue was seen around original bone even after 8 weeks. Histomorphometric analysis of representative sections in group 1 showed a higher rate of new bone formation, but the difference from the other groups was not statistically significant. RT-PCR analysis indicated a correlation between bone formation and protein (osteonectin and osteopontin) expression. Conclusions: DDM with a space between particles of $200{\mu}m$ was effective in bone formation, suggesting that materials with a small particle size could reasonably be used for bone grafting.

  • In this study, the inhibition of ammonia on anaerobic digestion of butyric acid was evaluated and the potential alleviating effects of such ammonia inhibition by the addition of magnetite particles were investigated. Independent anaerobic batch tests fed with butyric acid as a sole organic source were conducted in twenty 60-mL glass bottles with 10 different treatment conditions, comprising ammonia: 0.5, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 7.0 g total ammonia nitrogen (TAN)/L and magnetite particles: 0 mM and 20 mM. The increase in ammonia concentration did not cause significant inhibition on methane yield; however, a significant inhibition on lag time and specific methane production rate was observed. The IC50 in the control treatments (without magnetite addition) was estimated as 6.2654 g TAN/L. A similar inhibition trend was observed in magnetite-added treatments; however, the inhibition effect by ammonia was significantly alleviated in lag time and specific methane production rate when compared to those in the control treatments. The lag time was shortened by 1.6-46.3%, specific methane production rate was improved by 6.0-69.0%. In the magnetite-added treatments, IC50 was estimated as 8.5361 g TAN/L. This study successfully demonstrated the potential of magnetite particles as an enhancer in anaerobic digestion of butyric acid under conditions of ammonia stress.

  • In order to study the characteristics of cloud, a real-scale experiment for cloud generation was carried out using an extinct vertical mine (430 m height) located in the northeastern Honshu, Japan. The dry particles generated from the three-step concentrations of NaCl solutions were used for cloud generation. The number size distributions of initial dry particles and cloud droplets were monitored by Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP) at bottom and upper sites of pit, respectively. The polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) method was employed to measure liquid water content ($W_L$) as a function of droplet size. Moreover the chemical properties of individual droplet replicas were determined by micro-PIXE. The CCN number concentration shows the lognormal form in dependence of the particle size, while the number size distributions of droplets are bimodal showing the peaks around $9{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$ for every case. In comparison to background mineral particles, right shifting of size distribution line for NaCl particles was occurred. When NaCl solutions with three-step different concentrations were neulized, $W_L$ shows the strong droplet size dependence. It varied from $10.0mg\;m^{-3}$ up to $13.6mg\;m^{-3}$ with average $11.6mg\;m^{-3}$. A good relationship between $W_L$ and cloud droplet number concentration was obtained. Both chemical inhomogeneities (mixed components with mineral and C1) and homogeneities (only mineral components or C1) in individual droplet replicas were obviously observed from micro-PIXE elemental images.

  • A transmission electron microscope investigation has been performed on the morphology of dislocations in deformed ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Ni_3(Al,Ti)$ alloys containing fine dispersion of disordered ${\gamma}$ particles. Superlattice dislocations dissociate into fourfold Shockley partial dislocations in a uniform supersaturated solid solution of the ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase. Dislocations are attracted into the disordered ${\gamma}$ phase and dissociate further in the particles. At any stage of aging, dislocations cut through the particles and the Orowan bypassing process does not occur even in the over-aged stage of this alloy system. The work necessary to pull the dislocation away from the disordered particles into the ordered matrix should mainly contribute to increase the strength of the ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase containing fine dispersion of the disordered ${\gamma}$ phase.

  • Aerosol charge neutralizers with various radioactive sources have been used to apply an equilibrium charge distribution to aerosols of unknown charge distribution. However, the performance of aerosol charge neutralizers is not well known, especially for highly charged particles. Measurements of highly charged particles are needed in air cleaning devices, e.g. electrostatic precipitator, bag filter with a pre-charger, and electrical cyclone. In this study, the particle charging characteristics of two different aerosol charge neutralizers were experimentally investigated for singly charged monodisperse particles and highly charged polydisperse particles. One has radioactive source of $^{85}$ Kr (beta source, 2 mCi) and the other has $^{210}$ Po (alpha source, 0,5 mCi). The air flow rate passing through each aerosol charge neutralizer was changed from 0.2 to 2.5 L/min. The results show that the charge distribution of singly charged monodisperse particles passing through the $^{85}$ Kr aerosol charge neutralizer is well agreed with the Boltzmann equilibrium charge distribution at an air flow rate of 0.3 L/min, However, it deviates from the equilibrium charge distribution when the air flow rates are 0.6, 1,0, and 1,5 L/min, On the other hands, the effect of air flow rate is insignificant for the $^{210}$ Po aerosol charge neutralizer. The non-equilibrium character in charge distribution of highly charged polydisperse particles passing through the $^{85}$ Kr aerosol charge neutralizer greatly depends on the air flow rate, however it is insensitive to the air flow rate for the $^{210}$ Po aerosol charge neutralizer.

  • ($Y_{l-x}$ $Gd_{x}$ )$O_2$$_3$: $Eu^{ 3+}$ red phosphors were prepared with the solvothermal synthesis using the 2-methoxy-ethanol solvents and the emission intensity was investigated that applied with the 254 nm wavelength and the maximum excitation wavelength for energy source. The used solvents for the solvothermal synthesis were made of nitrate salt solutions of Y, Gd and Eu. These solutions dropped in autoclave have be reacted with the solvothermal synthesis at $200^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs and the red phosphors prepared here in were showed the pure cubic phase after annealing at $1000∼1200^{\circ}C$. The brightness of ($Y_{l-x}$ $Gd_{x}$)$_2$$O_3$: $Eu^{3+}$ phosphors particles was increased as an increase of Gd ratio. The maximum excitation wavelengths of ($Y_{l-x}$ $Gd_{x}$ )$_2$$O_3$: $Eu^{3+}$ / phosphors particles were increased according to increasing Gd ratio from 253 nm to 259 nm wavelength. The maximum emission intensity of $Gd_2$$O_3$: $Eu^{3+}$ (Y/Gd = 1/0) phosphors particles under UV 259 nm was found to be higher than the commercial product of $Y_2$$O_3$: $Eu^{3+}$ phosphors.

  • The effect of magnetite particles on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of furfural wastewater was investigated using sequential anaerobic batch tests. The batch tests with four 500 mL anaerobic bioreactors were performed under two conditions: FC treatment for AD of furfural without magnetite particles, and FM treatment for AD of furfural with magnetite particles. The FC bioreactors showed a decreasing methane production rate (MPR) across the sequential batches, with a final batch MPR of 11.3 ± 0.4 mL CH4/L/d, indicating the need for a methanogenesis enhancer to achieve high-rate AD of furfural. Conversely, FM bioreactors exhibited significantly higher MPR, exceeding FC values by 4-196%, with a final batch MPR of 33.5 ± 0.1 mL CH4/L/d, which was about three times higher than FC. Additionally, FM bioreactors had faster degradation rates of furfural, valeric acid, and acetic acid compared to FC, with values exceeding those in PC by 3.0, 1.14, and 2.8 times, respectively. These results demonstrate that magnetite particles can enhance the AD of furfural not only by accelerating methanogenesis but also by accelerating the anaerobic degradation of furfural and its intermediates, such as volatile fatty acids. This study provides valuable insights for developing high-rate AD systems for furfural wastewater treatment.
