  • Variations of the seventeen amino acids(aspartic acid, threonine, serine, glutamic acid, proline, glycine, alanine, cystein, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, histidine, lysine, arginine) were analyzed in human hair sample by amino acid auto analyzer(AAA). The effect of bleaching and permanent wave manipulation on the amino acid composition of hair were investigated. Hair samples were collected from 10 males in their thirties. Hair samples were treated with 10 mL of 6 N hydrochloric acid at $110^{\circ}C$ for 24 h and analysed by AAA. The results showed that the amino acid content of normal hair(73.9%) decreased to 71.5% and 69.3% after bleaching and permanent wave treatment, respectively. Furthermore, mean contents of lysine and tyrosine in amino acids showed obviously decreased about 25% by permanent wave and bleaching treatment. On the other hand, serine, cystein, leucine and histidine were not changed.

  • To increase the productivity of in vitro development, the antioxidants have been used for culture system of bovine oocytes and embryos. However, comparative studies on these molecules are rare and direct beneficial effects on blastocyst production cannot be discriminated for best results. The study was conducted to determine the influence of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), N-acetyl-L-cysteine amide (NACA), glutathione (GSH) and cysteamime (CYS) on maturation competence of COCs from GV to MII stage and productivity of blastocyst formation during in vitro fertilization and culture. There was no difference among maturation rates of oocytes to metaphase II with polar body with antioxidants for any of the treatment groups (p>0.05). However, the significant improvement on the rate of blastocysts ($32.3{\pm}5.0%$) was found in 0.1 mM CYS treatment than 0.3 mM NAC, 0.2 mM NACA or 0.5mM GSH (p<0.05). The addition of NAC ($18.8{\pm}3.7%$) or NACA ($21.2{\pm}3.9%$) did not improve development competence to morula and blastocysts than control ($24.4{\pm}4.1%$) and GSH ($26.5{\pm}5.0%$) (p>0.05). Our study showed that medium supplementation with CYS during IVM and IVC improved the rate of bovine embryo development but not with NAC, NACA and GSH addition.

  • In order to maximize hydrogen production by Enterobacter cloacae YJ-1, anaerobic hydrogen producing bacteria, the medium composition was optimized. Glucose was better than other carbon sources in hydrogen production and its production was 975.4 mL/L at $2\%$ (w/v) for 48 h. Organic nitrogen sources were more effective than inorganic nitrogen sources and also yeast extract among organic nitrogens was the most effective in hydrogen production. Among metal ions, $Na_2MoO_4$ was most effective, and its production was 1753.3mL/L at $0.04\%$ (w/v). Addition of amino acid was very effective with compare to another components of medium, and cystein was most effective among them. Under the optimum medium obtained in batch culture, semi-batch culture in order to produce continuous hydrogen was run. The highest hydrogen production was earned at $3\%$(w/v) of glucose and the amount was 2215.4 mL/L.

  • Polyphenol oxidase from Jerusalem artichoke(Helianthus tuberosus L.) tubers was partially purified by precipitation with ammonium sulfate, followed by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100. The enzyme showed maximal activity at pH 6.5 and $4^{\circ}C$. Kinetic studies indicated $K_{m}$ value of 3 mM for catechol and activation energy of 72.6 kcal/mole. As for substrate specificity of polyphenol oxidase the enzyme showed high affinity towards diphenol compounds, but not towards monophenols. The enzamatic browning was completely inhibited at 1 mM concentration of L-ascorbic acid, sodium hydrosulfite and L-cystein(HCl). The activity of polyphenol oxidase in 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer(pH 6.5) was fairly stable for a week at $4^{\circ}C$, while it decreased remarkably at $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Iron has a crucial role in growth as part of metalo-proteins like haemoglobin or myoglobin, enzymes; they are also involved in energetic reactions. Iron plays a vital role in fertility. At high doses, Iron has a harmful consequence on the reproductive system, which can be strongly reflected the final stage of spermatogenesis. Nutritional products are claiming to use nanotechnology and it is important to recognize the potential toxicity of nano-sized nutrients. Recently iron nanoparticles were proposed as a food additive for poultry. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of L-cystein coated iron oxide nanoparticles on reproductive performance in male quails. The results of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, Alternating Gradient Force Magnetometer and Scaning Electron Microscopy showed that iron oxide nanoparticles was produced and have been coated with L-cycstein (Fe3O4-Cys NPs). A total of 100 one-week-old quail chicks were randomly placed to five groups of five replicates. Four quails (two male and two females) were raised in an individual cage for each replicate. The five experimental treatment diets consisted; negative control diet, with no Iron supplementation; positive control diet supplemented with 60 mg/kg of Fe3O4; treatment diets supplemented with 0.6, 6 and 60 mg/kg of L-cystein coated iron oxide nanoparticles. The hemoglobin, Red blood cell, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, gonadal somatic index, daily sperm production, total testicular sperm and sperm viability of the male quails that were fed with diet supplemented by 0.6 mg/kg of Fe3O4-Cys NPs were improved as compare with negative control. This study showed that not only the use of the Fe3O4-Cys nanoparticles had no side effects but also it can be used as a feed additive to improve the reproductive performance in male quails.
