  • Studies were conducted from May, 1993 to April, 1995 to determine the changing patterns of infection Ity the liver fluke, Clonorchis sinensis, among residents and fish hosts in Kyongbuk Province. The infection rate among residents was 7.7% by stool examination. The rate in males (11.3%) was significantly higher than females (4.1%) Positive rate of intradermal test was 27.6% in the same population. The special type of a simple catalytic model was applied for the analysis of intradermal positive reactors by age arid sex, ann the equation was Y= 0.4776 t (1 -e-0.0375t) for mates ann, y : 0.2085 (1-e-0.0138t) for females. Analysis of stool examination data by two-stage catalytic model revealed y : 0.025 (e-0.0047t _ e-0.0235t). The annual Clonorchis infection rate was 4.7 per 1,000 susceptibles and the annual loss rate was 23.5 per 1,000 infected. The frequency distribution by the eggs per gram (EPG) was calculated as well as the cumulative percentages of positives. The regression equations were y : 0.929+ 1.506 log x for males and, y : 0.473 + 1.767 log x for females. Of the 25 fish species, 7 species were infected with Clonorchis mrtacercariae. Infection rates varied by the species, and ranged from 2.8% in Punfun,Bia herzi to 30.0% in Pseudorasbora panic. Average number of the matacercariae per gram of flesh was 58.1 in p. pnnpa, followed by 10.2 in Gncthopogon atromoculntus, 7.0 in Saurosobio dobryj, and 3.0 in Pcrccheilogncthus rhonlben. The present study indicates that clonorchiasis in Kyongbuk Province is less prevalent than that of several decades ago.

  • A field survey was carried out in Korea to assess the mineral composition of rice straw since it is a cheap and available cattle feedstuff. Forage and soil samples were collected in 4 localities in the Kyongbuk province. Soil analysis were also carried out in order to establish the relationships between soil composition and mineral content in the rice straw. Based on NRC tables, the rice straw samples provided adequate amounts of Mg, Ca, K, S, Mo, Mn and Zn. Percentages of samples deficient in P, Na, Cu and Se were 83, 50, 67 and 83 respectively. Soil samples, whose mean pH was 5.8 and mean organic matter content was 3.99%, were comparatively acidic and had high organic matter content. They also had high amounts of extractable Fe and Mn. Correlation coefficients between mineral content in soil and rice straw were low, i.e., 0.42 for Me (p < 0.05), and 0.37 for Mo (p < 0.05). The low or nonexistent correlation between soil and forage composition indicates the difficulty of establishing appropriate methods of mineral availability to the plants.

  • Nowadays we continue to face challenges to the safety of our foods. It seems clear that contaminated meats provide the major route of listeria monocytogenes transmission from the environment to humans. L monocytogenes is the most important species associated with disease in humans among the listeria sp. The current incidence of symptomatic listeriosis caused by L monocytogenes is uncertain. Although the number of reports in the literature on listeriosis are increasing, it is likely that they are actually unrecognized or underreported because of a lack of awareness on the part of some laboratory workers who fail to isolate or identify these organisms. To get the information of sanitary development, we survey various meats (beef, pork, etc) in Kyongbuk area. Samples were collected from local meat shop at Kyongbuk area. Total sixty six case were isolated and identified from one hundreds and seven samples. L innocua was the most abundant in listeria sp. Among U isolates, the number of isolated L innocua was 43 (65.2%). The numbers of isolated L murrayi, L welshimeri, L monocytogenes and L seeligeri were 12(18.2%), 7(10.6%), 3(4.5%) and 1(1.5%), respectively, but L grayi, L iuanouii were not Isolated.

  • In order to determine population dynamics of Anopheles sinensis, a survey based on average number of female mosquitoes per trap-night was carried out during the period of 5 years from 1987 to 1991, A. sinensis Birst appeared between the 2nd and 20th April, and were trapped in large number between the 5th and 12th July. The number of trapped mosquitoes began to decrease from mid-August, and a few were collected until mid-November, each year. The average number of A. sinensis in July was 542.6 per trap-night in 1987, but in 1989 increased abruptly to 1,331.4, and then decreased to considerably lower levels, 271, 9 in 1990 and 372. 1 in 1991. The nocturnal activity of A. sinensis to attack humans was found to become active in the early night, and it was gradually decreasing at mid·night, however, then slightly increasing toward dawn. The immature stage of A. sinensis in the rice paddies was Birst found in the correlation pattern with peak adult densities in early July. The highest larval density of A. sinensis in the study area was 21,226×103 in early July 1990. The larval A. sinensis showed high resistance level and resistance ratios against 3 kinds of organo- phosphorous compounds, diazinon, malathion, and fenitrothion, but low resistance against fenthion. The present results indicated that the population density of A, sinensis in Kyongbuk area is decreasing over the five·year from 1987 to 1991. Key words: Anopheles sinensis, seasonal prevalence, population dynamics, Kyongbuk Province.

  • This survey was carried out to investigate the effect of flooding by heavy rain on growth characteristics and disease incidence of 'Fuji'/M.26 mature apple tree in 1998 at Kyongbuk province. The surveyed regions were Andong, Uisung, and Gunwi area. The six orchards were selected from one area, totally 18 orchards were surveyed. The flooded depth of surveyed orchards was from 70 to 350 cm, and the flooded duration was from 6 to 72 h. Defoliation ratio, number of abnormal budding, and flowering per tree were increased along with the increment of flooded depth and duration. Rooting ratio was decreased rapidly with the increment of flooded duration, and dead root ratio was 16.2% in flooded orchards. Marssonia blotch (Diplocarpon mali), white rot (Botryosphaeria dothidea) of fruit, and phytophthora fruit rot (Phytophthora cactorum) incidence were increased in flooded orchards. The analysis results of pearson correlation coefficient among surveyed items showed that higher relationship of abnormal growth characteristics and increment of disease incidence of 'Fuji'/M.26 apple trees with flooded duration than with flooded depth. With these results, the flooded depth was found to be the main factor for the abnormal growth characteristics and disease incidences of 'Fuji'/M.26 apple trees.
