Effect of the effluent of the sewage and wastewater plants on the algal growth was investigated from the 19 plants located in the Nakdong river basin. Most of the samples showed high values of the algal growth potential (AGP) when they were mixed with natural river water at 20% of final concentration. At 20% of the mixing ratio, the mixed effluents of sewage and wastewater showed 3.5 and 1.8 times higher AGP than those of the natural river water. The higher AGP values are attributable to the high contents of phosphorus and ammonium in the effluent. The mixing ratio of effluents of the discharge/river flow was highest in the Kumho River (42.8%) followed by the middle of Nakdong River (22.7%), Kam Stream (13.9%), Byungsung Stream (13.3%), Yangsan Stream (7.9%), and Young River (5.4%). Comparison of the trophic state of the effluents with natural river water indicated that the effluents showed higher trophic values than natural water. Concentrations of total phosphorus, total nitrogen and conductivity in the effluents were 12.3, 4.9 and 5.3 times higher than the those found in natural river water respectively. The AGP values were highly related with the trophicity of the water especially on the concentrations of phosphate and ammonium. Toxicities of the treated sewage water, wastewater and livestock waste water tested by the luminescent bacteria, Vibrio fischerii were generally low.
The Kumho River flows through volcanic and sedimentary rocks at upstream and downstream regions and also through industrial district including dyeing complex before it meets the Nakdong River, and as a result, many factors can influence the geochemistry of river water. The concentrations of dissolved ions generally increased as it flows downstream. The concentrations of cations are in the order of Ca>Na>Mg>K, and those of anions are $HCO_3$>$SO_4$>Cl>$NO_3$. These results show that the weathering of sandstone and shale containing carbonate including calcite caused the enrichment of Ca and $HCO_3$. At first 4 sampling sites, Si contents are relatively high mainly due to the weathering of silicate minerals of volcanic rocks. However, Na and $SO_4$ contents are higher at downstream sites due to the industrial and municipal sewage. Piper diagram also shows that the geochemical patterns changed from Ca-$HCO_3$ to Ca-Cl/Ca-$SO_4$ and Na-Cl/Na-$SO_4$ type. When comparing the samples collected in May and July, the concentrations of dissolved ions in July are generally lower than those in May, which indicates that dilution by precipitation played an important role. In July the relative concentration of Ca increased, indicating that Ca in soils probably from fertilizer were mixed into the river water by precipitation. The river waters are mainly from precipitation. The dissolved ions are mainly from weathering of carbonate minerals and pollutants from municipal sewage and discharged water from industrial complex. The composition of oxygen and deutrium isotope in July showed higher values, which is contrary to the amount effect, maybe due to Youngchon Dam. The nitrogen isotope showed lower values in July than those in May, which can be interpreted to indicate mixing of nitrate from soils and fertilizer in the cultivated land by the heavy rain. The isotope composition of nitrate increased downstream, indicating that the influence of sewage and animal manure also increased downstream.
The present study was conducted to investigate biological degradability of phosphamidon and profenfos. In the biodegradation test of two pesticides by the modified river die-away method from May 20 to July 29, 1999, the biodegradation rate was determined in Nakdong (A) and Kumho(B) River. The residual percentages of phosphamidon were 74.9%, 68.8% and 62.7% in control, A and B samples 7 days after applicaton, respectively. Biodegradation constants and half-lives of phosphamidon were 25.1%, 21.9% and 11.9% in control, A and B samples 7 days after application. Biodegradation constants and half-lives of profenofos were 0.0005 and 58.4 days in A, 0.0013 and 21.6 days in B, respectively. The biodegradation rates of phosphamidon and profenofos were higher in the Kumho River (B) than in the Nackdong River(A). The strains of microorganisms for the degradation of phosphamidon and profenofos were identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Aeromonas hydrophila and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, all Gram-negative bacteria. In order to identify biodegradate products, the extracts of cultivates were analyzed by GC/MS. The mass spectra of biodegradate roducts of phosphamidon were at m/z 153 and 149, those of the profenofos were at m/z 208 and 240, respectively. It was suggested that the biodegradate metabolites of phosphamidon were O, O-dimethyl phosphate(DMP) and N, N-diethylchloroacetamide, those of profenofos were 4-bromo-2-chlorophenol and O-ethyl-S-propyl phosphate.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial change of water quality pollutant in the upper-stream of Kumho River basin. For this purpose, it compared with ground survey data of water quality measurement, using GIS and Landsat TM image, and then constructed a database of water quality pollutants in the watershed by Arc/Info. Also the land cover classification maps of 1985 and 1997 were prepared using maximum likelihood classification. This study detected and analysed the classified images to produce the area of land cover change per sub-basin. In addition, choropleth maps were prepared with spatial change value of water quality pollutants, and overlay analysis was carried out with weight score for each layer. The results of this study revealed that population, animals and fruit orchards were main factors in the spatial change of water pollution of Kumho River basin. The Comparision of pollutions by sub-basins showed a high pollution value in Daechang-chun and Omok -chun stream which follows through the urban area.
The Neural Network Models which mathematically interpret human thought processes were applied to resolve the uncertainty of model parameters and to increase the model's output for the streamflow forecast model. In order to test and verify the flood discharge forecast model eight flood events observed at Kumho station located on the midstream of Kumho river were chosen. Six events of them were used as test data and two events for verification. In order to make an analysis the Levengerg-Marquart method was used to estimate the best parameter for the Neural Network model. The structure of the model was composed of five types of models by varying the number of hidden layers and the number of nodes of hidden layers. Moreover, a logarithmic-sigmoid varying function was used in first and second hidden layers, and a linear function was used for the output. As a result of applying Neural Networks models for the five models, the N10-6model was considered suitable when there is one hidden layer, and the Nl0-9-5model when there are two hidden layers. In addition, when all the Neural Network models were reviewed, the Nl0-9-5model, which has two hidden layers, gave the most preferable results in an actual hydro-event.
The size of minimum order stream has a very sensitive effect on runoff analysis model using the divergence characteristic of stream. Therefore, in this study, the threshold area of minimum order stream has been examined the change characteristic of topographical parameters. The subject basin of the research was the upper basin of the Kumho water gage station which is located in the middle of the Kumho river. The 1:25,000 numerical geography which was constructed $10{\times}10m$ mesh was used. The range of investigation of topographical parameters are number of stream order, length, area, slope, basin relief, sinuosity ratio, drainage density and total stream length etc. It was found from the result of analysis that the threshold value of minimum order stream has a very big effect on topographical parameters of basin. It was found that the threshold area of minimum ord er stream revealed under $0.10km^{2}.$ Furthermore, the parameters showed a serious change except for over $0.10km^{2}.$
Investigations were carried out to observe the seasonal succession of phytoplankton, and viable counts of bacteria from the mid to lower reaches of Nakdong Fiver. An intensive monitoring was conducted from May to December 1999 biweekly at 6 sites in a main channel and 3 tributaries. Although there are several sites with high nutrient loading from the basin, all of study sites showed mesotrophic states owing to high discharge(June~September). Relatively low algal biomass and CFUs(mean of chi. a, $12.3{\pm}$11.5 $\mu\textrm{g}${\el}l$, CFUs : 1.8${\times}10^7$) were observed during the rainy season. The diatom population was dominant(over 85% of total community) year-long with peaks(Stephanodiscus hantzchii) in the fall and winter. Dominance of blue-green algal groups during the summer was not observed in the summer. Microorganisms peaked in the summer and fall(June~September), affected mainly by the inputs of phytoplankton and nutrients. Biomass of phytoplankton and CFU counts were higher in the Kumho River than other tributaries and main channel.
This study was carried out to investigate the activity of nitrogen fixation and accumulation of heavy metal and inorganic matter in Vicia amoena community at lower region in Kumho riverside, including Youngchon, Chimsangyo, Paldalgyo, Talseochon and Kumhogyo. The contents of inorganic matter and heavy metal of Kumho riverside soil increased in the down stream in each organ of the plant growing in the riverside. Generally, V. amoena community showed rapid growth of shoot and high value of Top/Root ratio. V. amoena community showed higher water content of shoot at late growth stage and higher chlorophyll content. The root nodule of V. amoena community appeared in April and increased by 0.30, 0.27, 0.24, 0.06 and 0.14 g/plant, and nitrogen fixation activity of nodule attained 20.1, 16.8, 15.4, 8.5 and 5.3 μmol·C₂H₄·g fw nodule/sup -1/·h/sup -1/ for non-contaminated area Youngchon, Chimsangyo, Paldalgyo, Talseochon and Kumhogyo, respectively, in June:. Nodule formation and nitrogen fixation activity were reduced in the down stream by the soil contamination and heavy metal accumulation and showed minimum values. at Talseochon and Paldalgyo. V. amoena showed growth adaptation against heavy metal toxicity by restricting heavy metal such as Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe from transport, and by accumulating high Ca ion in shoot, nitrogen and phosphorus in root at late growth stage than those at early one, respectively, but total heavy metal per plant showed higher values in shoot than those in root by high T/R ratio of plant growth.

The herbivorous rotifers community (Brachionus spp.) and population dynamics of the predator rotifer (Asplanchna spp.) in three tributaries (Kumho R., Nam R., and Hwang R.) of the Nakdong River were evaluated on biweekly intervals from Jan. 2001 and Dec. 2002. High abundance of the herbivorous rotifers (peak density: - ca.>1000 Ind. $L^{-1}$) was observed from two tributaries (Kumho R. and Nam R.) during the spring and fall seasons, respectively. The high peaks of herbivorous rotifers were not evident in one tributary (Hwang R.). Among the herbivorous rotifers, brachionid rotifers (Brachionus spp. consisting of 7 species) were the characteristic rotifer community in this study. Brachionus spp. tended to occur together with the other perennial species, Asplanchna. Asplanchna was also present while two species of B. angularis and B. calyciflorus were highest in density. Subsequently, two populations (B. angularis and B. calyciflorus) rapidly declined, becoming rare after high peaks of Asplanchna occurred, except in one tributary (Hwang R.). We found community shifts in rotifer groups in mid-spring and mid-fall at the study site. The Asplanchna population could be appeared to play an important role in regulating the rotifer community and total plankton biomass in spring and fall at high trophic levels.
In the course of an investigation on the morphological variation of Korean striped bittering, Acheilognathus vamatsutae Mori, two kinds of morrholoflical types were found. Some morphological characters were compared between them and multivariate analysis was conducted. Since the difference of the barbel length between them was very significant (p < 0.01,1-test), they should be designated as L-and 5-type Hshes: fishes with long barbels and those with should barbels, respectively. Lateral line scales, snout length and prepectoral length showed a tendency that the observation could be distinguished from each other (p < 0.05, Duncan's multiple range tests. There were no individuals over 70 mm BL in S-type and so S-type fishes were somewhat dwarf than L-type fishes. The two types were also clearly distinguished by multivariate analyses using cluster and discriminant analyses. According to the observation on the four populations of the Naktong River, the blue-green stripe on the body side and the white band on the margin of anal fin in males of S-type fishes were well developed through the year but those of males of L-type fishes completely disappeared or became slender during nonbreedins season as that of females. Of the seven localities surveved, there were no places that the two types cohabit. S-type fishes are limited only in the Kumho and Wichon River of the Naktong River system but L-type fishes are distributed more widely In the Hongchon, Mangvons, Somjin, Mirang and Panbyon River.
