  • For ecological study of Synechogobius hasta the environmental factors, length composition, stages of ovarian maturation, growth, and stomach contents of this species were examined. The samples were collected from the Kum River estuary from May, 1994 to June, 1995. The ovarian egg development of this species underwent 4 stages : the oogonium stage in October to November, growth stage in December to February of next year, maturity stage in February to April, and spawning stage in late April to middle May. The peak spawning period appeared in early to middle May. The fecundity varied from 8,600 to 49,000 showing a exponential increase by body size. The minimum size having matured eggs was 225 mm in total length (standard length 180 mm). The larvae smaller than 10 mm appeared in late May, and young fish of total length $13\~15mm$ entered into bottom life in the shallow waters. The young fish grew rapidly and reached about 141.7 mm in late October. The fish inhabited in the subtidal zone from December to May of next year when began to spawn. The largest specimen examined in this study was 531 mm of male, 472 mm of female. The major food items of young fishes were copepods and invertebrate larvae, and those of adult fishes were crabs, fish, shrimps, cephalopods, and polychaetes.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the application techniques, such as geometrical correction, image overlapping etc., of LANDSAT Thematic Mapper image data especially useful to the geomorphological study of tidal flats. The developed processing techniques were applied to the Kum river estuary. The results of this study are as follows. 1) According to the analysis of the distribution and topographical profiles of the tidal flats, the geomorphological characteristics of the study area seem to be different depending on their location. 2) Even though the geomorphological changes were not always observable on the satellite images, several areas of undoubtful short-term deposition could be detected on the analytical map-image which compares two different situations of tidal flats. 3) Even though a further ditailed study is necessary, the distribution and dispersal patterns of suspended materials and sea surface temperature distribution patterns due to tidal and other meteorological conditions were analyzed by LANDSAT TM channel 3 and 6.

  • To study ecological properties of Vibrio cholerae non-Ol and Vibrio mimicus which have been described as new food poisoning bacteria recently, the influence of factors such as temperature, salinity, pH and chemical oxygen demand (COD) on detection rate and density of these bacteria were evaluated. Fifty four seawater samples and 49 bottom deposit samples from estuary of Kum river from March 26th, 1993 to February 22nd, 1994 were used for this study. The detection rate of V cholerae non-O1 were $16.7\%$ for seawater and $10.2\%$ for bottom deposit, respertively. The total detertion rate of V. cholerae non-O1 $(11.7\%)$ was a little higher than V mimicus $(10.7\%)$. Both V choierae non-O1 and V. mimicus were mainly detected in estuary water of which showed temperature $24^{\circ}C$ above and salinity $10\%o$ below. These bacteria were also detected in bottom deposit on January when the water temperature was $3.5^{\circ}C$. From these results, we supposed that temperature, salinity and organic material were important factors to growth of V. cholerae non-O1 and V. mimicus. V cholerae non-O1 might be grown better than V. mimicus under the fluctuating aquatic environmental condition such as salinity.

  • Vibrio septicemia,, resulting in high mortality, has been caused by Vibrio vulnificus. Ingestion of marine products or contact with sea water contaminated with Vibrio vulnificus can cause septicemia. Vibrio vulnificus has been detected world wide and west sea area of Korea, Kum river estuary in particular, showed high detection rate. Higher detection rate of Vibrio vulnificus were reported in the bottom deposit with low depth of water, low salinity, and high COD. Man with the liver disease can easily come down with Vibrio septicemia and the main source is the sliced raw fish dish. The preventive measure for this disease is to wash raw fish material thoroughly with tap water and handle in sanitary conditions. Washing with sea water is strictly prohibited . It may be necessary to forbid the small-scale businessmen from selling the sliced ray fish dish in the vicinity of seashore. Man with the liver disease of diabetes should not swim or consume the raw fish dish in the contaminated area during summer.

  • The ichthyofauna and passing efficiency of fish ways were surveyed in the lower and upper regions of the river mouth dam in the lower reaches of the Nakdong river from June to December in 20()0. As the dam built in the river mouth, the brackish area in the estuary disappeared completely and the transitional area did not formed. The fishes collected from survey were classified into 49 species, 45 genera belonging to 29 families. Among them, the fresh water fishes composed of 10 species, peripheral freshwater fishes 11 species and sea water fishes 28 species respectively. Because of the ecological difference between the fresh and sea water, dominant species in the Myeong-ji of sea water area was Acanthogobius flavimanus (39.1%) and in the Sa-sang of fresh water area was Achanthorhodeus macropterus (44.4%). By the video camera records, fishes were identified nine species like as Coilia ectenes, Cyprinus carpio, Hemibarbus labeo, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Plecoglosus altivelis, Lateolabrax japonicus, Anguilla japonica, Mugil cephalus and Pholis nebulosa. Based on total species collected, the efficiency of the fish way for the anadromous fish was 10.1%. Therefore, efficiency evaluation of the fish way in the Nakdong River Mouth Dam was low.

  • Quantitative species distribution and primary productivity of phytoplankton were studied monthly from August, 1987 to July, 1988 along with the quantitative distribution of total heterotrophic bacterioplankton and three groups of physiologically chracteristic bacterioplankton in the intertidal and subtidal waters off Kum River Estuary, Yellow Sea. A total of 121 phytoplankton taxa including 102 diatoms occurred, and cell concentration ranged from 15 to 5451 (cells/ml). The great spatio-temporal variations of the number of phytoplankton species and cell concentration well reflected the environmental differences between the intertidal and subtidal waters. Primary productivity (in Piopt, mgC/$m^3$/hr) ranged from 0.6 to 27.3. Just after the phytoplankton bloom (March) Piopt was very low in April at station 1, where amylolytic bacterioplankton also showed quite low population density. The peaks of primary productivity were not always coincided with those of phytoplankton standing crop. The ratio of Piopt's between samples well indicated the environmental differences between the intertidal and subtidal waters. Little characteristic trend was found in the scatter diagrams of phytoplankton standing crop along the population densities of total heterotrophic bacterioplankton and the three groups of physiologically characteristic bacterioplankton. In summer the phytoplankton standing crop was minimum in contrast with the high population density of bacterioplankton, which implies the influx of much allochthonous orgainc matter from Kum River. The scatter diagrams of Piopt along bacterioplankton population density revealed some phenomena there. Piopt had highly positive correlation with the population density of amylolytie bacterioplankton($R^2$=0.84) and that of lipolytic bacterioplankton($R^2$=0.70) while total heterotrophic bacterioplankton and proteolytic bacterioplankton had lesser correlations with Piopt. From the regression lines the increase of unit Piopt (mgC/$m^3$/hr) in the study area was calculated to mean the increase of $9.0{\times}10$ cells/ml and $8.0{\times}10$ cells/ml of amylolytic bacterioplankton and lipolytic bacterioplankton, respectively.

  • The present study was conducted to research some parastic trematodes species in marine bivalves which are widely distributed in the western sea in Korea. From April, 2001 to October, 2002, marsh calm (Corbicula japonica) were obtained from Kochang bay near the Sunun temple and razor calm (Sinonovaculla constricta) from Kaehwado. Short necked calm (Ruditapes philippnarum) were sampled from Ochungdo, Mardo and Kaeyado. Cercaria corbiculae was found in the gonad of C. japonica with a low infection rate of 0.83%. The cercaria and the sporocyst were sized $278{\times}98{\mu}$ and $890{\times}275{\mu}$, respectively. Some encysted larvae of Parvatrema duboisi sized $0.351{\times}0.182mm$ were firstly found in the mantle of S. constricta in Korea. Each S. constricta contained 1-9 cysts and the infection rate was 48.3%. Cercaria tapidis was found in the both gonad and mantle of R. philippinarum. The annual average infection rate in the R. philippinarum from Ochungdo was 7.7%. This rate was much higher than those from Solri near the Kum river estuary in 1981. The infection rate of C. tapidis in R. philippinarum was different in sizes. The maximum rate was 4.8% in size 3.6-4.0cm and the minimum rate 0.8% in size 4-5cm.

  • To determine the physiological, biochemical characteristics and toxicity of hemolysin produced by a novel sucrose positive Vibrio (Vibrio sp. D5) isolated from estuary of Kum river, it was compared with already known sucrose positive Vibrio. Salinity, pH, temperature and conductivity of place where Vibrio sp. D5 was isolated were $4.7\%_{\circ},\;7.6,\;24^{\circ}C$ and $7800{\mu}MHOS$, respectively. Physiological and biochemical characteristics distingiushed Vibrio sp. D5 from other sucrose positive Vibrio: V. alginoipicus, V. cholerae, V. cincinnatiensis, V. fluvialis, V. furnissii and V. metschnikovii. The range of salinity and pH for growth of Vibrio sp. D5 were $0.5\%\~7.5\%$ and $4.5\~9.5$, respectively. Vibrio sp. D5 exhibited typical yellow colony on TCBS agar plate and curved rod type upon transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Vibrio sp. D5 had lethal toxicity against mouse in case of intraperitoneal injection with its culture and showed hemolysin activity on human blood agar and sheep blood agar. Ubrio sp. D5 also demonstrated vascular permeability activity toward rat. From the above results, Vibrio sp. D5 was ascertained to be a novel pathogenic Vibrio.

  • A hemolysin producing bacterial strain which belong to Vibrio species was isolated from the Kum River estuary. In the process of identification, the strain did not show characteristics of known Vibrio species; thus, the strain was designated as Vibrio sp, E10 (V. kunsan) tentatively and further identification study was carried out by comparing its bacteriological characteristics. Morphologically Vibrio sp, E10 was comma shaped rod with a polar flagellium. Clear hemolysis zones were observed with the strain against human and sheep blood agar. Hemollytic toxicity was confirmed by strong vascular Permeability and fatal toxicity against mouse was also observed. Therefore the strain was a pathogenic vibrio. Growth conditions for Vibrio sp. E10 were ranged salinity of 0$\~$$4.5\%$, pH of 6.2$\~$9.2, temperature of 14$\~$42$^{\circ}C$, respectively, 16S rDNA partial sequence of Vibrio sp, E10 showed $99\%$ homology with dozens of V. cholerae species including V, cholerae El Tor N16961 and V, snmisnfus ATCC 33653T. This strain belonged to Proteobacteria; gamma subdivision; Vibrionacea: Vibrio. But, among knorn Vibrio species no identical styains were found when using automatic bacteria identification system ($MicroLog^{TM}$system, release 4.0, Biolog Inc., USA) which evaluated the ability of metabolizing 95 kinds of carbon and nitrogen sources. Vibrio sp, E10 showed 18 and 11 different responses as compared to V. mimicus and V, cholerae, respectively.

  • This paper was considered on the applicability of EFDC KUNSAN_SEDTRAN MODEL (2012) to calculate Gunsan Port sediment deposition height efficiently and to use for grasping its aspects quantitatively and providing its prevention measures reasonably based on well-known 3-dimensional EFDC sediment transport module. This model was calibrated and verified with various measured field data of A Report of Hydrological Variation on Kum River Estuary (2004). Due to the model calibration and relevant literature investigation for cohesive sediment parameters, settling velocity (WS), critical deposition stress (TD), reference surface erosion rate (RSE), critical erosion stress (TE) were identified as 2.2E-04m/s, 0.20 $N/m^2$, 0.003 $g/s{\cdot}m^2$, 0.40 $N/m^2$ respectivly on this model. In order to examine the applicability and precision of the model computation, the calculated model data of sediment deposition height at 13 stations for 71 days and suspended-sediment concentration at 2 stations, inner port and outer port for 15 days were compared and analyzed with the measured field data. As a result, the model applicability for sediment deposition height simulation was evaluated as NSE coefficient 0.86 and the precision for suspended-sediment concentration computation was evaluated as time averaged relative error (RE) 23%.
