Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify impact of stress on depression among university students and the moderating effect of social support in the relationship between stress and depression in university students. Methods: A total of 445 subjects were participated from May to July 2011. Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires and t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 20.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: The results indicate that depression was increased by stress and decreased with social support. Social support included four type of social support behavior; emotional support, informational support, material support, and appraisal support. Multiple regression analysis showed that moderating effect of emotional support was significant when provided by friends but not by parents. Conclusion: These finding indicate the importance of emotional support of friends on depression in university students.
This study explored the relationship of children's perceived social support and locus of control to their self-esteem. Subjects were 190 5th grade children. Instruments were the revised Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (1967), Dubow and Ullman's Social Support Appraisal Scale (1989), and Crandall's Intellectual Achievement Responsibility (1965). Data were analysed by t-tests and Pearson's correlations. Children with high perceived social support had higher self-esteem than children with low perceived social support. Children who attributed their success to internal factors had high self-esteem; children who attributed their success to external factors had low self-esteem. Successful children who attributed their success to external factors had low self-esteem, regardless of their social support level. Children who attributed their success to their abilities or hard work had high self-esteem only if they received high social support.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to examine the level of social support, health promoting behaviors and depression among unmarried pregnant women and to identify the relationship between social support, health promoting behaviors and depression. Method: A descriptive correlational study was conducted. The participants were 102 unmarried pregnant women receiving shelter services from four facilities in two metropolitan cities. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA and Pearson correlation were used for data analysis. Results: The level of social support and health promoting behaviors were relatively lower and the level of depression was relatively higher than those of married pregnant women. The participants received especially low social support from their unmarried partner. There was a positive relationship between social support and health promoting behaviors. Moreover, there were negative relationships between social support and depression and between health promoting behaviors and depression. Conclusions: To promote physical and emotional health of unmarried pregnant women, more attention is necessary to increase their social support. A nursing intervention program to increase social support among unmarried pregnant women in needed.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between life stress and depression, and the effect of social support in postpartal $4{\sim}6$ week women. Theoretically social support is thought to mediate the relationship between life stress and depression. Data were collected from June 1 to July 30, 1999. The data were analysed by use of SPSS. Two hypotheses were tested using Gamma, a measure of association for ordinal variables. Partial gamma was used to test the third hypothesis. Patterns of elaboration described by Babbie(1986) were selected to interpret the relationship of the three variables in the analyses. The results of this study are summarized as follows ; There was a positive relationship between life stress and depression (Gamma=.45, P=.017), and an inverse relationship between social support and depression (Gamma=-.49, P=.009). Thus the first, two hypotheses were supported. 2. When social support was controlled, the relationship between life stress and depression increased under the condition of low social support, but with high social support, the relationship decreased. It can be interpreted that life stresses are positively related to depression under the condition of low social support, however this relationship cannot be expected with high social support.

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the mediator effect of social support in the association between stress for college life and depression among nursing students. Methods: The participants of the study were 201 university students in A and C cities. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure the variables. In the data analysis, the SPSSWIN 25.0 program was utilized for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, Sobel test and multiple regression analysis. Results: Mean scores of stress for college life, depression and social support were 2.56, 4.12 and 0.61, respectively. Stress for college life and depression showed a significant positive correlation (r=.60, p<.001), while depression and social support showed a significant negative correlation (r=-.46, p<.001). Lastly, stress for college life and social support showed a significant negative correlation (r=-.55, p<.001). The analysis of the mediator effect of social support in the association between stress for college life and depression showed that social support had a significant mediator effect. Conclusion: Among nursing students, social support may be a mediator in the association between stress for college life and depression. Therefore, strategies for nursing intervention to improve social support should be developed for nursing students.

The 68 items(perceived support scale 30 items, enacted support scale 35 items, and support network 3 items) were analyzed by the statistical methods of item analysis, principal factor analysis, Factor analysis revealed that a three factor solution was the best for the Perceived Support scale ; family peer, teacher support. Enacted Support scale comprised of three factors; emotional, self-esteem, and informational support. Support Network scale was composed of emotional, self-esteem, and informational support network. Reliabilities for the domains ranged form .75-89. It was concluded that the children's Social Support scale in general is acceptable for use in Korea.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the related factors of clinical practice satisfaction and social support in dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 420 dental hygiene students in Gwangju and Jeonnam from March 8 to April 8, 2014. Except 26 incomplete answers, 394 data were analyzed. The instrument consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(7 questions), social support(7 questions), and satisfaction level with clinical practice(22 questions). The instrument for satisfaction level with clinical practice included self-esteem(1 question), interest and usefulness(2 questions), knowledge application(1 question), place of clinical practice(1 question), and influence by practice leader(1 question). Cronbach alpha was 0.773 in the study. The instrument of social support was adapted from Park and reconstructed. Social support included emotional support(11 questions), self-esteem support(7 questions), and informative support(4 questions). Social support was score by Likert 5 scale and higher score showed the higher social support. Results: The dental hygiene students got a mean of $3.11{\pm}0.55$ in clinical practice satisfaction. They got 3.35 points in satisfaction with major and 3.32 in satisfaction with curricula(p<0.001). They got a mean of $3.68{\pm}0.55$ in social support. They got $3.69{\pm}0.57$ in emotional support; $3.81{\pm}0.59$ in self-esteem support; and $3.53{\pm}0.66$ in informative support. The influencing variables on satisfaction with clinical practice were self-esteem support(B=0.202), satisfaction with major(B=0.234), and satisfaction with curricula (B=0.128). Conclusions: There was a close relationship between satisfaction with clinical practice and social support. In order to enhance the satisfaction with clinical practice, it is necessary to connect self-esteem support with major satisfaction and curricula satisfaction.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the concept of social support of nursing students using a hybrid model and to derive a definition and attributes of social support through theoretical, fieldwork, and final analysis stages. Methods: Twenty-nine studies were analyzed in the theoretical stage. Seventeen in-depth interviews were conducted with nursing students in the fieldwork stage. In the final analysis stage, the concept of social support was defined and the attributes were derived by integrating the theoretical and fieldwork stages. Results: The attributes of social support of nursing students identified in the final analysis consisted of two dimensions and eight attributes. The two dimensions were structural and functional support. The eight attributes were social network, educational, emotional, informational, economic, positive evaluation, self-esteem support, and support by providing a role model provision. The structural dimension included the social network support attribute. The functional dimension included the remaining seven attributes. Educational support and support by providing of a role model provision were newly derived attributes that reflected specific characteristics of nursing students. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, we suggest that researchers should attempt to develop a scale to measure the social support of nursing students.
