  • This study aimed at a scientific examination of the relationship between NVOCs concentration and the physical environment of red pine forest in spring season. Atmospheric NVOC samples in red pine forest was collected through five trials conducted from March to May 2013, using Tanax-Ta-charged disposable tubes and mini-pumps. At each trial, measurements were taken at three different points in daytime (sunrise, southing and sunset). For maximum accuracy, two tubes were used for each measurement at the same location, and the mean value was used for analysis. Compound analysis on the NVOC samples was done using the HS-SPME method and GC-MS. Analysis of the relationship between NVOC and the physical forest environment found higher concentrations of most substances, including ${\alpha}$-pinene and ${\beta}$-pinene, with higher temperature, dew point, and lower concentrations with higher wind velocity. The findings of this study offer scientific evidence which can inform the creation of 'healing forests' and 'recreational forests' as well as forest environment in general, helping to promote public health and recreational activities.

  • The physical, mechanical and chemical properties of old and new Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) were analyzed. The old woods were from dismantled timbers of Bonjungsa temple. The crystallized resin in the latewood was observed by microscopic analysis. Also, reduction of specific gravity, occurrence of microscopic cleavage of tracheid was observed in the old wood. The angle of microscopic cleavage of tracheid is estimated with the same angle of micro-fibril angle of 52 layer. The bending, compression and shear strength of old world were decreased about 35-27% than those of new wood. Dynamic modulus of elasticity measured by ultrasonic nondestructive test has the tendency of reducing by the time elapse of the wood usage. Therefore, deterioration of wood could be measured by reduction of specific gravity and dynamic MOE. The static MOE and mechanical properties of old wood could be predictable by measuring dynamic MOE in the longitudinal direction. Extractives of the old wood in 1-% NaOH solution are larger quantity than new wood. Therefore the decay of the wood could be evaluated by analyzing the chemical compound, especially 1-% NaOH solution. The results of this research could be used for understanding and prediction of the changing properties with elapsing time of wood.

  • This study was carried out to test the possibility that tracheid length of red pine growing in Sokwang-ri in Uljin could be used as one of variables to estimate its wood properties. For the study, forest stands of V (500 m a.s.l.) and VIIII (900 m a.s.l.) age class plots were selected in the region, and three trees in each plot were investigated. The tracheid length was separately measured for early- and latewood. It took approximately 25 and 40 years for V and VIIII age class stands, respectively, until the length was stabilized. The lengths in latewood were 3.14 (V age class) and 3.30 (VIIII age class) mm, and in earlywood 2.98 (V age class) and 3.15 (VIIII age class) mm. The lengths in latewood therefore were longer than in earlywood and the lengths for VIIII age class were longer than for V age class. However, the ratio between their lengths in early- and latewood was the same as 0.96 in all age classes. It might be verified whether this ratio can be used as a variable to test the wood property according to provinces by comparing it with others.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the sensory and quality characteristics of Solsulgi containing different ratios of ingredients such as pine leaves power(1, 2, and 3%), sugar, and water. The results of sensory evaluation showed that Solsulgi containing 1% pine leaves powder had the higher scores in overall acceptability, color and flavor preference. In the textural analysis of Solsulgi, the springiness, chewiness, gumminess, and hardness were decreased by adding pine leaves powder. The hunter's color L value of Solsulgi was decreased by the increase of pine leaves powder. The more pine leaves powder was added, the redness and yellowness of Solsulgi were increased. The moisture content of Solsulgi was higher in the samples with 3% pine leaves powder than those with 1 %.

  • Here we aimed to date the year and season of the resin collection from Korean red pines at Worak mountain and investigate the natural healing ability of the wounds using the tree-ring analysis technique. We determined the dating of the resin collection based on the synchronization between the ring-width time series from the wound surface of the experimental trees and the local master chronology, which is the mean time series from the sound surface on the opposite side of the wounds. For the dating of resin collection, we selected thirteen Korean red pines with resin wounds. For the investigation on the annual healing ability of the wounds, we sampled three dead trees out of 13 trees as disks. Through the comparison of the individual ring-width time series from the wounds with the local master chronology, it was verified that the resin collection was undertaken between the spring of 1962 and the autumn of 1975. The mean healing length of the wounds was 15.8 cm over the preceding 42 years, making their annual mean healing 0.38 cm. Through our study we successfully verified the healing ability of the wounded Korean red pines for the resin collection as well as the undocumented resin collection history.

  • To identify the seedlings from controlled pollination between one paternal tree and three maternal trees of Japanese red pine, cpSSR markers of the paternally inherited haploid genome were analyzed in two year old 114 seedlings of full sib families. Individual specific DNA fingerprint like haplotypes of the parental trees were determined by PCR with three cpSSR primers. Haplotypes of the 114 seedlings were also identified by PCR with the same primers. On the basis of the comparison of cpDNA haplotypes of the 114 seedlings with those of the parental trees, 14 seedlings revealed to have distinguished haplotypes from those of the paternal tree. It was tentatively concluded that they were generated via pollination with the non-paternal trees. A seedling of Gangwon30 revealing non-paternal haplotype might have been generated via self pollination with the pollens of maternal tree through improper emasculation or contamination during artificial pollination. DNA fingerprint like cpSSR profiles observed in this study could be successfully applied to the various plant forensic analyses, such as identification of siblings of individual trees, asexually reproduced ramets of a specific clone, vegetatively propagated individuals via tissue culture, and pure full sib progenies.

  • The secular trends and seasonal variation of the prices of imported lauan sawtimber, domestic red pine logs and sawtimber have been analyzed to find out the features and origins of price fluctuation in Korea for the period of 1961~1971. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. The relative prices of red pine logs were raised by 1.23 percent per year, and those of red pine and lauan sawtimber were decreased by 0.10 and 0.93 percent, respectively through the period. As a whole, there is a tendency in the country that timber prices were gradually decreased by lowing timber demand through savings in consumption and exploitation of alternative materials, with the increased supply through continuous log import. 2. There is also a tendency that the seasonal variation reduced in the last 15 years. In the period of 1961~1968, the seasonal price indices were peaked in spring and autumn, but thereafter peaked in spring and dropped down until winter. 3. In secular and seasonal variations of timber prices, the trend of sawtimber prices was dependent upon that of log prices but the fluctuation was larger in log prices.

  • The main purpose of this research is to provide scientific informations about standard wage and performance tariffs in forest management with special reference to working time for thinning. To identify relationships between net working time and tree characteristics, three geographically different sample plots were established at Yangsan, Bongpyung and Jinan and 460 oaks, 372 Japanese larches, 232 red pine and 240 pitch pine mere selected at each sample plots. The results of statistical analysis using multiple regression are as follows ; 1. Five independent variables of breast height diameter(DBH), mid-diameter(MD) large end diameter(LD), log-length(L), No. of branches(NOB) were stable independent of worker and tree species. 2. Comparing correlation coefficient of five independent variables, the best predictive variables, breast height diameter and No. of branches, were selected. Breast height diameter and No. of branches were identified as the most important independent variables in terms of effect on the dependent variable of the working time. 3. Comparing coefficient of determination (Rp) and residual mean square (MSEp), the best Linear regression equation for each tree species was selected as follower : $WT=a+b1{\times}NOB+b2{\times}DBF$ 4. Proportion of hang-up time to total working time in thinning were 66% in oak stand, 74%, in Japanese larch stand, 55%, in red pine stand and 52% in pitch pine stand, respectively. 5. Based on the best regression equation, a table of working time was made by strata of number of branches and breast height diameter. 6. Total working time using the best regression equation in Table 5 can be predicted in terms of felling time, limbing time, hang-up time, i.e., total working time increases by 11 to 13 seconds with every 1 centimeter increase in breast height diameter from 7 to 16 centimeter.
