  • Robot Operating System (ROS) has been a prominent and successful framework used in robotics business and academia.. However, the framework has long been focused and limited to navigation of robots and manipulation of objects in the environment. This focus leaves out other important field such as speech recognition, vision abilities, etc. Our goal is to take advantage of ROS capacity to integrate additional libraries of programming functions aimed at real-time computer vision with a depth-image camera. In this paper we will focus on the implementation of an upgraded vision with the help of a depth camera which provides a high quality data for a much enhanced and accurate understanding of the environment. The varied data from the cameras are then incorporated in ROS communication structure for any potential use. For this particular case, the system will use OpenCV libraries to manipulate the data from the camera and provide a face-detection capabilities to the robot, while navigating an indoor environment. The whole system has been implemented and tested on the latest technologies of Turtlebot3 and Raspberry Pi4.

  • In this study, four Korean black raspberry wines were developed using raspberries from different regions in Korea; Gochang (G), Hoengseong (H), Jeongeup (J), Sunchang (S). Sample wines were monitored for titratable acidity, ethanol, pH, reducing sugar content, color intensity, hue, total phenolic content, and organic acids during alcoholic fermentation and aging. After fermentation was complete, the pH levels in the four wines were in a similar range (3.43-3.52), while total acidity levels ranged from 9.98 to 16.2 g/L, which were significantly different among the four wines. During 120 days of aging, the ethanol content ranged from 15.8 to 16.40% which corresponds to a good conversion rate of sugars. Among the four samples tested, the wine made with Jeongeup raspberries showed the highest levels of total phenolic content, and other color values such as hue and intensity. The predominant organic acids were citric acids (3.30-4.89 mg/mL) and succinic acids (1.92-3.48 mg/mL). Overall the wine made with Jeongeup raspberries showed differences in physico-chemical compositions compared to the other wines made with Gochang, Hoengseong, and Sunchang raspberries, respectively.

  • Korean banknotes are similar in size, and their braille tend to worn out as they get old. These characteristics of Korean banknotes make the blind people, who mainly rely on the braille, even harder to distinguish the banknotes. Not only that, this can even lead to economic loss. There are already existing systems for recognizing the banknotes, but they don't support Korean banknotes. Furthermore, because they are developed as a mobile application, it is not easy for the blind people to use the system. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a Raspberry Pi-based banknote recognition system that not only recognizes the Korean banknotes but also are easily accessible by the blind people. Our system starts recognition with a very simple action of the user, and the blind people can hear the recognition results by sound. In order to choose the best feature extraction algorithm that directly affects the performance of the system, we compare the performance of SIFT, SURF, and ORB, which are representative feature extraction algorithms at present, in real environments. Through experiments in various real environments, we adopted SIFT to implement our system, which showed the highest accuracy of 95%.

  • This study was conducted to examine the impacts of different soil water potentials on environmental soil properties related to the moisture injury of Korean raspberry (Rubus coreanus Miq.). Soil water potential in the plastic film house plots was differentiated from -5 to -40 kPa. Soils in the plots contained 5.6% of plant available water. Increasing soil water contents based on the changes in water potential increased soil pH and exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ content and decreased exchangeable $K^+$ and total N contents. It also declined soil organic matter content at 9 days after water treatments. Relationship between water potential and soil water content was given as an exponential equation, y = 96.534 - 20.28In(x). In particular, when the water potential was higher than -20 kPa (27.5% of soil moisture content), it decreased chlorophyll content in the raspberry leaves, inhibited N uptake by the plant, and increased phosphorus content with increasing days after water treatment. Also, as the 7 days after water treatment at higher than -20 kPa of water potential, the root activity of the plant was significantly decreased, and trunk (top)/root (T/R) ratio of the plant markedly declined until 9 days after water supply. Carbohydrate contents in the raspberry plant leaves and roots at dormant stage were the lowest at -5 and -10 kPa of water potential plots, and it may cause winter injury to the plant.

  • Berries and green tea are underutilized in the food industry despite their great potential as a functional food ingredients. The purpose of this study was to determine the extraction conditions under which total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of berry and green tea extracts are maximized. Extracts produced using 0-80% ethanol and temperatures ranging from $5-65^{\circ}C$ were evaluated for total phenolic content (TP), as well as for DPPH and ABTS radical-scavenging activities by using response surface methodology. Both ethanol and temperature had significant effects (p<0.05). Ogaja extract produced at $67^{\circ}C$ by using 33% ethanol yielded maximum TP, ABTS, and DPPH values of 23.74 mg GAE/g, 19.77, and 25.04 mg VCE/g, respectively. Optimum conditions for mulberry and raspberry extraction were found to be $65^{\circ}C$ by using 69% and 40% ethanol, respectively. Mulberry and raspberry extracts had TP, DPPH, and ABTS values of 20.74 mg GAE/g, 23.55, and 35.44 mg VCE/g, and 26.08 mg GAE/g, 39.93, and 55.60 mg VCE/g, respectively. Green tea extraction at $57^{\circ}C$ by using 43% ethanol was found to be optimal, yielding TP, ABTS, and DPPH values of 101.15 mg GAE/g, 171.38, and 177.56 mg VCE/g, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 50% ethanol extracts of ripe black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis, RBR) on hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The final systolic blood pressure of the group treated with RBR for 12 weeks was significantly lower than that of the SHR group. The mRNA expression level of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) was significantly decreased in SHR. However, treatment with RBR and captopril increased the level of eNOS mRNA in SHR. Moreover, plasma levels of homocysteine and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 were significantly reduced by RBR. Plasma total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were lower in SHR than Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). However, there was no significant difference in plasma triglyceride level between WKY and SHR. The number of eosinophilic cardiac muscle cells was reduced in heart muscles after treatment with captopril and RBR. Therefore, this study suggests that RBR extracts may be useful for improvement of hypertension.

  • The antioxidant activities of extracts from Rubus coreanus Miquel (black raspberry) and Morus alba L. (mulberry) fruits were investigated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay, and reducing power assay. Aqueous mixtures of ethanol, methanol, and acetone were analyzed in order to determine the most effective extraction solvent for the two fruits. Black raspberry and mulberry extracts with the 60:40 acetone-water mixtures (v/v) showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activities (56.2 and 85.2%, respectively) compared to the other extraction solvents. The 60% acetone extract was finally selected as an extraction solvent and then sequentially fractionated according to solvent polarity. Among the fractions of the two fruits, the ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest antioxidant activity as well as total phenolic and total flavonoid contents. In addition, there were high correlation coefficients between antioxidant activities and their contents. The $EC_{50}$ value of the ethyl acetate fraction from mulberry fruit was 2.2 times lower than that of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) in DPPH assay. The major phenolic acid and anthocyanin of the two fruits were protocatechuic acid and cyanidin-3-glucoside, respectively.
