  • Medicines Research Institute, Wonkwang University, Republic of Korea According to the book "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)", Sodan(消癉) is strictly distinguished from 'diabetes' in the category. The former is a name of disease, but the latter means a symptom of 'Sodan.' At first the suffix 'dan' of 'Sodan' means disease, but over time, it had been used as the meaning of 'jaundice' and 'diabetes.' And as Jangjunggyeong(張仲景) applied the concept 'Sodan' to 'diabetes', now the word 'Sodan' has not been used as a name of disease anymore. It shows not only graphical change but also recognitive change regarding diseases. In this study, the applicability of 'diabetes' was expanded by reevaluating the concept 'Sodan', and resultantly, 'Sodan' has been represented in Korean medicine and Chinese medicine.

  • We report for the first time a taxon of the genus Thyrocarpus (Boraginaceae) from Daecheongdo, Ongin-gun, Incheon-si in Korea. This taxon appears to be Thyrocarpus glochidiatus Maxim., previously known from China. The new Korean name, 'Dae-Cheong-Ji-Chi', was given considering the name of discovered location. A description, an illustration and a photograph were given.

  • Objectives: Huangdineijing, the major classic of Oriental Medicine, preserves several precedent diagnostic classics and it's methods. Qihaishu (奇咳術), is a name of such classic, and the name of it's essential method at the same time. Up to now, the whole features of that method has not been unveiled. In the present thesis, I presented some clues to figure out the method - Qihaishu. Methods: By comparison of some articles in Canggongliechuan (in Shiji) (史記倉公列傳) to those of Huangdineijing Suwen (黃帝內經素問), I reconstructed the diagnostic steps of Qihaishu. Results: It was proved that Qihaishu method was carried by comparison of left and right arterial pulse under the Wuxing (五行) context. Conclusion: Qihaishu is not a set of knowledge describing the features of diseases, but a pulse palpation method to get prognosises.

  • Due to the increase of international business and activities, Koreans nowadays have higher needs to present their personal identity to the foreigners. In this process, the first requirement is to exchange personal names with foreigners. Therefore, the phonetic translation of Korean names into Roman alphabetic notation is frequently required, in order to deliver Korean personal names to the people who do not understand Korean alphabet. However, some confusions have been witnessed in the way of transforming Korean names into Roman (English) alphabet notation, due to the fact that there are many different ways to put Korean pronunciation into Roman (English) alphabet. This study examines different formats of Romanization of Korean personal names to find and suggest an optimal one. It first examines structures of and differences between Korean and Western personal names and usage patterns, reviews the issues surrounding Romanization of Korean personal names, and patternizes diverse Romanization formats currently used. Based on these examinations and consequent findings, I would like to suggest a format for the Romanization of Korean personal names which is considered to be the best.

  • To investigate the endothelium dependent vascular reactivity of the systemic arterial and the pulmonary arterial system in acute renal hypertensive rats of 2-kidney, 1-ligation type (RHRs), acetylcholine (ACh)-induced vasodilation and depressor effects were evaluated in isolated arteries and in vivo, respectively, in the presence and absence of functional endothelium. ACh $(10^{-5}\;M)$ relaxed the intact thoracic aortas from RHRs and normotensive rats (NRs), but the effect was significantly smaller for those from RHRs (34 and 86%, respectively, p<0.01). ACh-induced vasodilation was completely abolished after removal of endothelial cell or pretreatment with EDRF inhibitors, L-NAME and MB, indicative of its dependence on intact endothelial or EDRF function. ACh also induced vasorelaxation of the intact pulmonary arteries from RHRs and NRs; however, unlike the effects on the thorcic aorta, no significant difference in amplitude was noted between two groups. ACh $(0.1{\sim}10\;{\mu}g/kg,\;i.v.)$ reduced mean systemic arterial pressure in anesthetized RHRs and in NRs to the similar magnitude (% change: 39 and 46% at $10\;{\mu}g/kg$, respectively) and these hypotensive effects were significantly decreased after pretreatment with L-NAME (30 mg/kg, i.v.). Deprssor effects of ACh on mean pulmonary arterial pressure were similar in RHRs and NRs with and without pretreatment of L-NAME. However, in both NRs and RHRs, the depressor effects of ACh on mean pulmonary arterial pressure were significantly reduced compared with those for mean systemic arterial pressure, and the increment of mean pulmonary arterial pressure noted after L-NAME $(0.1{\mu}100\;mg/kg,\;i.v.)$ was significantly smaller than that for mean systemic arterial pressure. These results indicate that in RHRs the endothelial cell function was impaired, at least in part, in systemic arterial system, but not in pulmonary arterial system, and both ACh-evoked and basal release of EDRF was less in the pulmonary arterial system than in systemic arterial system of both NRs and RHRs.
