  • 300 extracts derived from 100 plants were tested for their potential to induce HL-60 cell differentiation using NBT assay and NSE/SE staining methods. Morphological changes from suspended to adherent state of the cells were also observed by microscopic examination. In result, 55 extracts induced cell differentiation into monocyte/macrophage lineage in the NBT and the NSE assay.

  • This study aims to investigate the distribution of the useful resources plants and the flora of Deogyusan. The flora of Deogyusan was investigated from April in 2002 to November in 2003. Vascular plants of this area consist of total 549 taxa; 9 forma, 64 varieties, 476 species, 281 genera, 90 families. It corresponds to $13.5\%$ of totally 4,071 taxa appeared in Korea. Useful plants of this area were investigated 399 taxa. It corresponds to $72.5\%$ of collected plants in this area under our study. Among the useful plants, there are 205 taxa of edible source, 179 taxa of pasture source, 159 taxa of medicinal source, 70 taxa of ornamental source, 15 taxa of timber, and 17 taxa of industrial raw materials. Korean endemic plants were composed 18 families, 23 genera, 19 species, 4 varieties and totaling 25 taxa.

  • This study was carried out in Mt. Backdu which is located at the borderland between Korea and China, to offer the information and help the people who in order to study and utilize the northernresource plants in future. Actually, the exploration and investigation were executed only in china sideof Mt. Backdu and its outskirts.Totally, 100 families, 281 genus and 703 species were investigated. They were classified into 26 spe-cies of pteridophyta, 14 species of gymnospermae, 101 species of monocotyledons and 562 species of di-cotyledons by general taxonomic classification, and 594 medicinal plants(84.5% ), 296 ornamentalplants(38.3% ), 161 edible plants(22.9% ), 92 industrial plants, 67 honey plants and 17 forage plantsby use.

  • Ten numbers of plants, based on their medicinal value, were used to test their efficacy against virosis (caused by cytoplassmic polyhedrosis virus) in tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury. in indoor rearing conditions. The aqueous extracts of leaf of Azadirichita indica (neem), Acharanthus aspera, Psoralea corylifolia, Asparagus racemosus, Adhatoda zelanica (Basak), Andrographis paniculata (Kalmegh), Moringa oilephera (sahjan), whole plant of Phyllanthus urinaria (Bhuiamla), Centella asiatica (Veng sag) and Curcuma longa (Haldi powder) in different concentrations were used for containment of virosis in silkworm larvae. The tasar silkworm larvae were orally inoculated with PIBs ($1\times10^6$) of AmCPV in $2^{nd}$ instar and treated with plant extracts in each instar ($2^{rd}$ instar onwards). The mortality due to virosis was recorded during larval period. The plant extracts, irrespective of their concentrations, were found effective in suppressing the virosis where P. urinaria reduced the virosis to 56.90% followed by A. paniculata (53.82%) and least in C. asiatica (5.15%). The lowest pooled larva mortality 36.99% was recorded in the treatment of P. urinaria. Comparatively higher larva mortality 39.91% was observed with the treatment of A. paniculata. The highest larva mortality in treatment was with C. asiatica (81.99%). In treated control larva mortality was 86.50%.

  • Rosa rugosa Thunb, a deciduous shrub of the genus Rosa, has been widely used to treat stomach aches, diarrhoea, pain, and chronic inflammatory disease in eastern Asia. In recent years, our research team has extensively studied the Rosa rugosa flower extract, and specifically undertook pharmacological experiments which have optimized the extraction process. Our methods have yielded a standard extract enriched in phenolic compounds, named PRE. Herein, we expand our efforts and evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity of PRE on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in RAW 264.7 macrophages. PRE significantly inhibited production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin $E_2(PGE_2)$, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$, interleukin (IL)-6, and interleukin $1{\beta}$ (IL-$1{\beta}$), as well as expression of their synthesizing enzymes, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase2 (COX-2). Furthermore, PRE inhibited activity of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) as well as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-${\kappa}B$) signaling pathway. Our findings are the first to explain the anti-inflammatory mechanism by PRE in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Given these results, we propose that PRE has therapeutic potential in the prevention of inflammatory disorders.

  • Candida albicans is one of the most common etiological agents in fungi-associated skin infections. There is an increase of candidiosis especially in the patient of acquired or induced immunodeficiency syndromes or in the event of long-term antibiotics and immuno-suppressor or cytotoxic therapies. To screen out reliable and effective anti-candidiosis agent, in this study, we have evaluated antifungal activity of 298 plant extracts against C. albicans. Based on the results of disc-paper method and determination of minimal inhibitory concentration, fifteen extracts were finally selected as possible sources of anti-candidiosis agent. Especially, six different plant extracts, such as Rubus parvifolius, Euphorbia pekinensis, Coptis chinensis, Eugenia aromaticum, Paeonia lactiflora var. hortensis and Paeonia suffruticosa showed strong antifungal activity against C. albicans, not to S. cerevisiae. These results suggested that medicinal and wild plants could be the potential source of antifungal agent.

  • To develop the natural antibacterial agents which don't have any toxicity against man, collected several species of medicinal plants were tested for their antibacterial activity and inhibition effect on organic acids production from Streptococcus mutans. Among the tested medicinal plants, methanol extracts and n-hexane fraction of Juniperus rigida S. et Z. had the comparatively strong activities. For example, strong antibacterial effect against S. mutans were showed in methanol extracts, n-hexane and chloroform fractions. Organic acids production were reduced to 89.3 and 90.8% of control in methanol extracts and n-hexane fraction treated concentration of 1 mg/ml, respectively.
