  • From the outset Library and Information Science as a field of discipline began as part of the social sciences (or applied social sciences) in the 1930s. However, due to the practicality and technology emphasized by functionalists, the social science characteristics deteriorated and the science and technological aspect became more accentuated. Ultimately, Library and Information Science was not able to identify its main research subject of libraries and associated apparatuses as a form of social knowledge system, and could not help but neglect to induct and apply theory and philosophy from the social sciences. In the present study, after an examination of social epistemology and sociology of knowledge, which are important epistemological foundations necessary for the strengthening of social scientific aspect of Library and Information Science, a new research parameter called sociology of library was presenteL The sociology of library will be a scheme for an epistemological turnover on the discipline of Library and Information Science.

  • Archive science is similiar to the basic concept of library and information science, especially in terms of accessing, conserving, using archives. Historical and administrative study groups has presented theoretical and logical facts to absorb archive science into their field of study. However, In the library and information science group, the level of research and interest of archive science is relatively poor and even apt to regard archive science with exclusion. This research is an analysis of the tasks carried out in the library and archives. It takes a deep look into the similarities and differences between both fields and also look into the possibility of integrating archive science with library and information science.

  • The goal of the present study is to identify the topic trend in the field of library and information science in Korea. To this end, we collected titles and s of the papers published in four major journals such as Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society, and Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science during 1970 and 2012. After that, we applied the well-received topic modeling technique, Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA), to the collected data sets. The research findings of the study are as follows: 1) Comparison of the extracted topics by LDA with the subject headings of library and information science shows that there are several distinct sub-research domains strongly tied with the field. Those include library and society in the domain of "introduction to library and information science," professionalism, library and information policy in the domain of "library system," library evaluation in the domain of "library management," collection development and management, information service in the domain of "library service," services by library type, user training/information literacy, service evaluation, classification/cataloging/meta-data in the domain of "document organization," bibliometrics/digital libraries/user study/internet/expert system/information retrieval/information system in the domain of "information science," antique documents in the domain of "bibliography," books/publications in the domain of "publication," and archival study. The results indicate that among these sub-domains, information science and library services are two most focused domains. Second, we observe that there is the growing trend in the research topics such as service and evaluation by library type, internet, and meta-data, but the research topics such as book, classification, and cataloging reveal the declining trend. Third, analysis by journal show that in Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, information science related topics appear more frequently than library science related topics whereas library science related topics are more popular in the other three journals studied in this paper.

  • This is to report the objectives, planning and the process of the establishment of an on-line information retrieval system in Korea. The model is the case of the Library of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) which is the multi-disciplinary contract research organization in science and technology. The report explains the objectives and the step by step process such as input materials, analysis of the materials, structure of the data base files, indexes, command language, and the process, technique and logic of information retrieval. A brief comparison is made with other systems such as OCLC and BALLOTS and the authors gave various illustrations and samples to clarify the processes. The authors regrets that they could not give any detailed information on the budget or the cost accrued so far.

  • The most typical roles of libraries in their information societies are public access points to the networks, providing teaching and training, assisting in knowledge resource discovery, and knowledge providers. In order to fulfil these roles, libraries should be a ky element in national and local cultual policies. Effective policy making is the most important responsibility of libraries as well as national and local governments and one of library management tools for running the library. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to review the spectrum of the library and information policies in Korea and suggest some desirable directivities for library policy making.

  • When the unification process was established, West German librarians formed a commission for all library and information sectors. After legal unification, the committee formed 6 Arbeitsgruppe(AG) to develop library and information policies for the country. This was designed specially to elevate the level of the East German library system to the West German standard. The first AG concerns the public libraries. The second AG focuses on the education system for library and information specialists. The third AG examines the academic libraries. The fourth AG reviews the regional and national library services and the central organization. The fifth AG explores library and information techniques. The sixth and final AG inspects the legal problem of libraries. Each AG consists of specialists from both East and West German library systems who are experts in their particular subject area. The committee has general meetings to determine the best direction for the nation's library system. Common knowledge indicates this unification was based on economical amalgamation(fusion) from East Germany to West Germany. The unification resulted in the library and information recommendations tending to favor the more advanced West German policies. In this process there are a number of subtle ideological and psychological problems. If before the separation they had developed their library system as one entity, they could overcome the current differences. with much less confusion. In this political phenomenon we can learn that cultural unification needs more time than political unification.

  • By taking a bottom-up "library in the life of the user" perspective rather than a top-down "user in the life of the library" perspective, this paper uses anecdotal evidence from the past and near present to examine the multiple roles the U.S. public library plays and has played as public space in the everyday lives of its patrons. By harnessing "public sphere" theory discussed in Jurgen Habermas's THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE (1989) and by the examining the rich literatures on civic life and institutions that have evolved from it, the author argues that Library and Information Studies discourse has to expand its scope to include research and analysis of "library as place" from a user's perspective if it hopes to develop a deeper understanding of what the public library does for means to members of the communities in which they reside.

  • From the 1957's of the cradle which curricula of library science was applicable to university to the 1978's today of heyday, it has been rapidly developing in the 20 years (1957-1978) and they have 5 junior colleges, 9 undergraduate courses, 5 graduate courses, 1 Ph. D. course. The education of library science above the undergraduate course was given greatly prominence to the theory of library science, information science and foreign languages more than that of the putting first in the practical business and built up the educational system of library science. Today is the informatization period from the 1960's. The fact which the automation of library works was attached in the latter half of the 1970's in Korea is the social need in order to respond to the worldwide tendency. As a result of making an analysis of curricula from junior colleges to graduate schools in this paper, I took the new direction which it is an alternative plan of the point at issue, and I want to be useful in the education of library science forwards.

  • Library authorities are responsible for allocating its resources to best achieve library goals. This means the question of benefits and costs for library activities, as well as a n.0, pplication of economic theory to it. To consider these, this study dealt with theoretical analysis: 1) the nature of economic models, 2) economic theory to library activities, 3) and its a n.0, pplicability. However, economic model method allows us to use an analytic technique that is founded on library production and consumption. Thus, its major contribution is creation of a framework or system for maximizing the efficient library activities.

  • The rapidly growing at which information is produced and used in our complex society has presented us with major problems in information transfer. Resource sharing is almost universally accepted by librarians as the only realistic means for meeting future demands and no doubt the future will see continued growth in computer-based library networks for resource sharing. The resort to networking by many library and information institutions may be symptomatic of the difficulties they face in dealing with their rapidly changing environment. In this article, the library network is examined in relationship to resource sharing. Included is a discussion of the definitions of library network and other related terms, the main factors in the emergence of library network concept, the history of the concept of library networks, resource sharing through the library networks, the problems by which the development of networks is confronted, and prospects.
