Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the satisfaction with instruction medium according to learner attitude and lecture mode in the dental hygiene students. Methods: A web-based self-reported questionnaire was complected by 155 dental hygiene students in Cheonan from May 26 to June 5, 2015. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, school adaptation, interest to learn, effort to learn, faculty centered lecture, learner centered lecture, self-directed learning, motivation to learn, characteristics of each subject, and satisfaction with lecture mode. The study was approved by institutional review board (IRB) by Baekseok University. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression were used to evaluate the satisfaction to medium of instruction according to explanation factors. Results: The lecture mode, opportunity and motivation to learn, interest to learn and effort to learn were the significant factors to satisfaction with instruction medium. In multivariate logistic regression model, the adjusted odds ratio was 6.28 for the opportunity to learn and 4.87 for the interesting to learn. Conclusions: The satisfaction with instruction medium is the most important factor that decides the lecture mode and learner attitude including opportunity to learn and concern to learn.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of oral health education for the elderly using $Qscan^{TM}$. Methods: This study was a quasi-experiment design of nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design carried out by oral health education from January 17 to March 7, 2015. The subjects were 64 elderly people over 65 years old who had more than one remaining teeth in the anterior teeth and canines living in Hongseong-gun and assigned to 33 control group and 31 intervention group. The intervention group was measured only by $Qscan^{TM}$. The educational effect between two groups were evaluated using oral health behavior, gingivitis index, and plaque index. After Institutional Review Board from Namseoul N University, the elderly people participated in the study. Results: The intervention group showed lower plaque index of percent reduction than the control group. The two groups showed a significant difference in gingival index after the oral health education(p<0.05), but did not show a significant difference in oral health behavior after the oral health education(p<0.05). Conclusions: The effect of oral health education through the motivation of $Qscan^{TM}$ was very effective in the comparison of oral health behavior, gingival index and plaque index.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between dental fear and subjective oral health-related quality of life. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 320 subjects in Seoul and Gyeonggido from June to August, 2014 after permission from Institutional Review Board (IRB). Except incomplete 9 copies, 311 data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 19.0 program. The questionnaire consisted of five questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, twelve questions of oral health related quality of life, eighteen questions of dental fear, and one question of awareness toward subjective health status. Results: The explanation power of subjective oral health-related quality of life on dental fear was 26.2 percent. As the subjective oral health-related quality of life increased by 1 point, the dental fear decreased at the rate of 0.645 (p<0.001). Conclusions: Higher subjective oral health-related quality of life will diminish the dental fear. Regular dental checkups and preventive treatment are very important to enhance the oral health-related quality of life in those who visit the dental clinic.
Purpose: The aims of current study were to assess the inhaler competency and medication adherence, and to identify association of inhaler competency with medication adherence in patients with obstructive lung disease. Methods: We did a secondary analysis of the Hanyang Obstructive Pulmonary Evaluation data in a single institution from June 2014 to April 2015 after an approval of Institutional Review Board. A total of 150 patients with asthma or chronic obstructive lung disease participated in the study. Inhaler competency was evaluated accuracy in each step for using metered dose inhaler. Medication adherence was calculated using actually dispensed doses based on the prescribed inhaler doses. Results: Older adults (${\geq}65$) had lower competency in using inhaler (66.7 vs 83.3, z=-4.52, p<.001) and poorer medication adherence (67.7 vs 91.8, $x^2=14.06$, p<.001) than adults (<65). Inhaler competency was associated with medication adherence (p=.26, p=.001). Surprisingly, more than 50% of patients were current smokers. Conclusion: Inhaler competency and medication adherence were lower in older adults with obstructive lung disease than those in adult-age patients. Therefore, an individual education program for older patients should be developed to improve the rates of proper use of inhalers. Nursing management for obstructive lung disease should focus on developing behavioral intervention strategies for smoking cessation.
Purpose: The objectives of this study were to examine the difference between scores assigned by dementia patients and their caregivers to the patients' anxiety, depression, and quality of life. Methods: After obtaining Institutional Review Board(IRB) approval, face-to-face interview with the patients and their caregivers respectively was conducted by trained graduate-level nursing students from December 2007 to February 2008. Patients' anxiety, depression, and quality of life were measured by patients and their caregivers. The data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 14.0 program, which was used for frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and Pearson's correlation. Results: Significant relationships were reported between the depression rated by patients and that rated by their caregivers(r = .37, p = .019). In addition, there was no difference between the quality of life rated by patients and that rated by their caregivers(t = -7.11, p = .479). However, there was no significant relationship between the anxiety rated by patients and that rated by their caregivers(r = .21, p = .195). Conclusion: There were no differences on level of depression and quality of life of dementia patients measured by dementia patients and caregivers, However, dementia patients' anxiety level has discrepancy between them.
Objective : This is prospective study of clinical outcomes of percutaneous plasma disc coagulation Therapy (PDCT) in patients with herniated lumbar disc disease (HLD) to evaluate the safety and efficacy in its clinical application and usefulness as a reliable alternative to microscopic discectomy. Methods : Forty-six patients were enrolled in this study from April 2006 to June 2010. All patients had one-level HLD. Disc degeneration was graded on routine T2-weighted magnetic resonance Image (MRI) using the Pfirrmann's grading system and all index levels were grade 3 and grade 4. Indications for surgery were radiculopathy caused by disc protrusion with soft consistency. MRI was done at one month after the procedure in all patients to check post-PDCT change. The clinical outcomes were evaluated using Visual Analog Scales (VAS) score and MacNab's criteria. Results : This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of our institution. The age of the study population ranged from 16 to 59 years with a mean age of 37.2 years. There were 29 males and 17 females in this study. The mean period of clinical follow-up was 21 months. The average preoperative VAS score for radiculopathy was $7.4{\pm}1.4$, while the final follow-up VAS score was $1.4{\pm}0.7$ (p<0.001). In MacNab's criteria, 41 patients (89.1%) had achieved favorable improvement (excellent and good) until later follow-up. There were one patient from infection and two patients who needed to convert to open discectomy. Conclusion : PDCT is a safe and efficient treatment modality in a selective patient with HLD.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between a experience of falling, fear of falling, depression, and perceived health status in urban areas. Methods: After obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, a one-time, face-to-face, and private interview was conducted with each participant who was eligible and agreed to participate in this study from May 2007 to August 2007 by trained graduate-level nursing students. The questionnaires consisted of Fall Efficacy Scale, K-GDS, and SF-36. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS/PC 12.0 program, which was used for frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and hierarchical regression. Results: The major findings of this study were as follows; 1) approximately 9% of participants had fallen within one year. Study participants reported moderate fear of falling(M=43.80); moderate physical health (M=42.31) and mental health(M=46.05); and low depression status(M=10.38). 2) there were significant differences in fear of falling according to gender, experience of falling, exercise, and depression. 3) significant factors influencing on fear of falling were experience of falling and physical health status. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nurses working closely with older adults should be taught the impact of previous falls and physical health status on fear of falling and need to reinforce exercise behavior for older adults who are vulnerable to fear of falling.

Objective : Brain metastases in gynecologic cancer (ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancer) patients are rare, and the efficacy of Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKRS) to treat these had not been evaluated. We assessed the efficacy of GKRS and prognostic factors for tumor control and survival in brain metastasis from gynecologic cancers. Methods : This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board. From May 1995 to October 2012, 26 women (mean age 51.3 years, range 27-70 years) with metastatic brain tumors from gynecologic cancer were treated with GKRS. We reviewed their outcomes, radiological responses, and clinical status. Results : In total 24 patients (59 lesions) were available for follow-up imaging. The median follow-up time was 9 months. The mean treated tumor volume at the time of GKRS was $8185mm^3$ (range $10-19500mm^3$), and the median dose delivered to the tumor margin was 25 Gy (range, 10-30 Gy). A local tumor control rate was 89.8% (53 of 59 tumors). The median overall survival was 9.5 months after GKRS (range, 1-102 months). Age-associated multivariate analysis indicated that the Karnofsky performance status (KPS), the recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) classification, and the number of treated lesions were significant prognostic factors for overall survival (HR=0.162, p=0.008, HR=0.107, p=0.038, and HR=2.897, p=0.045, respectively). Conclusion : GKRS is safe and effective for the management of brain metastasis from gynecologic cancers. The clinical status of the patient is important in determining the overall survival time.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to reduce the burden on dental hygienists in performing dental hygiene processes in the clinic. This study systematically analyzed dental hygiene problems and dental hygiene planning according to the oral condition of patients by applying an oral health care program based on the dental hygiene process. Methods: This study analyzed influential factors of 17 dental hygiene problems and 12 dental hygiene plans according to the oral health index and charts of 185 patients. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB No. 1041449-201801-HR-003) of Silla University. The frequency of dental hygiene problems and dental hygiene planning was analyzed and correlations among the oral health index, dental hygiene problems, and dental hygiene planning were analyzed. Results: The higher the bleeding on probing score was, the more scaling was planned. The higher the calculus rate was, the more air-jet and jaw joint disorder prevention education was planned. The higher the O'Leary index was, the more dietary education and air-jet was planned. The higher the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index was, the more air-jet and jaw joint disorder prevention education was planned. The higher the Periodontal Screening and Recording index was, the more scaling and professional tooth cleaning was planned (p<0.05). Conclusions: The burden of oral preventive duties on dental hygienists will be minimized by systematically establishing problems and planning of dental hygiene according to patients' oral health index scores. Therefore, it is expected that dental hygienist can actively use the dental hygiene process in oral health care programs.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between fluorine concentration within finger nails and the level of dentifrice in dental hygiene students and non-health majoring students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by seventy female college students living in Daegu and Gyeongbuk that are not supplied with fluoridation from May to June, 2014. Informed consent was approved by institutional review board (IRB). The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects (11 items) and oral health behavior including number of toothbrushing, duration of toothbrushing, number of mouth rinsing, and amount of dentifrice. A dentist and a dental hygienist examined directly the subjects by the guideline of World Health Organization (WHO). The oral examination included decayed tooth, healthy tooth, and filled tooth. The nail samples were obtained from seventy female students. Results: Comparing the dental hygiene students and non-health majoring students, 62.5% of dental hygiene students used approximately 1300mg of dentifrice and 55.2% of non-health majoring students used 1800mg or more of dentifrice. The non-health majoring students used more dentifrice (p<0.01). The fluorine concentration within nails was $1.9905{\mu}l/g$ in dental hygiene students and $3.2149{\mu}l/g$ in non-health majoring students. The fluorine concentration within nails in the dental hygiene students was significantly lower(p<0.01). Conclusions: The accumulation of fluoride in human body is not fully caused by dentifrice. However, The accumulation may occur due to toothbrushing so that it is necessary to educate the students about the right use of the dentifrice.
