  • Objective : This paper aimed to measure the relationship between the performance of Korean handwriting and visual fixation for children. Methods : Twenty-one typically developing children aged 7 to 9 years participated in the study. The children performed Korean handwriting task wearing Tobii Pro Glasses 2. The Korean handwriting task consisted of 10 words from elementary school textbooks. The handwriting skill was measured by the coefficient variation of the letter size and the fixation cound and duration. Correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relation between visual fixation and the coefficient variation of the letter size. Results : The results showed that the visual fixation per second was positively correlated with Korean handwriting vertical size coefficient variation, indicating that the more consistent the vertical size of the letter, the smaller the fixation count per second. Conclusion : The results suggested a relation between the performance of Korean handwriting and visual fixation in typically developing children. This study is the first attempt to measure eye movement during the Korean handwriting process, and suggests a future direction for research on students' development in writing Korean.

  • Handwriting identifications are often faced with difficulties in evaluating handwriting by persons under the influence of alcohol. Cerebellar dysfunction is associated with deficits in the control of movement extent, as well as changes in the amplitude and relative amounts of acceleration and deceleration and action tremor. Although numerous articles are available on the subject of alcohol influence on handwriting quality, most of them were based on empirical data such as experience method, without any statistical evaluation. In this study, Hangul signature giyeok and nieun of consonant were measured in samples of handwriting. The result of this study can be used as a basic data of comparison on handwriting by identifying consistency of features and relative individualization of.

  • With a surge of interest in OCR in 1990s a large number of handwriting or h handprinting databases have been built one after another around the world. One problem that researches encounter today is that all the databases differ in various ways including the script qualities. This paper proposes a method for measuring handwriting qualities that can be used for comparison of databases and objective test for character recognizers. The key idea i involved is classifying character samples into a number of groups each characterizing a set of qualities. In order to evaluate the proposed method we carried out experiments on KU-1 database. The result we achieve is meaningful and the method is helpful for the target tasks.

  • This paper proposes a quality evaluation system of a handwriting string written by electronic pen. For the purpose of the system, this paper describes how to retrieve reference data from a database, how to evaluate the quality of a handwiting string using global and local features. Also, it explains how to optionally recognize a grade of a handwriting string at using global and how to diagnose stroke order at using local. The quality can be evaluated in the case of different language between reference and input by the system. Therefore, we expect that the system is very useful not only for training on handwriting but also for learning a language.

  • This paper proposes a unified multi-modal input framework to interface the recognition engines such as IBM ViaVoice and Microsoft handwriting-recognition system with general window applications, particularly, for pen-input displays. As soon as user pushes a hardware button attached to the pin-input display with one hand, the current window of focus such as a internet search window and a word processor is overlaid with a transparent window covering the whole desktop; upon which user inputs handwriting with the other hand, without losing the focus of attention on working context. As well as freeform handwriting on this transparent input overlay as a sketch pad, the user can dictate some words and draw diagrams to communicate with the system.

  • Inspired by the rapid development of deep learning and online biometrics-based authentication, we propose a handwritten one-time password authentication system which employs deep learning-based handwriting recognition and writer verification techniques. We design a convolutional neural network to recognize handwritten digits and a Siamese network to compute the similarity between the input handwriting and the genuine user's handwriting. We propose the first application of the second edition of NIST Special Database 19 for a writer verification task. Our system achieves 98.58% accuracy in the handwriting recognition task, and about 93% accuracy in the writer verification task based on four input images. We believe the proposed handwriting-based biometric technique has potential for use in a variety of online authentication services under the FIDO framework.
