Geological Characteristics of Kyongju-Ulsan Area : Palaeomagnetism and Magnetic Susceptibility of the Granitic Rocks in the Ulsan Fault Area (경주-울산일원에 대한 지역지질 특성연구 : 울산단층주변 화강암류의 잔류자기와 대자율)

  • A total of 469 granitic samples were collected from 44 sites in the Ulsan fault area, southeast Korea. According to the previous petrographic studies, the granitic rocks have been divided into four groups (Hornblende biotite granodiorite, Hornblende granite, Biotite granite and Alkali-feldspar granite). NRM intensities, values of low field magnetic susceptibility, and magnetic behaviors during stepwise demagnetization experiments suggest rather a three-fold classification: In this scheme, Hornblende granite and Biotite granite are grouped together, as they did not show any significant differences in magnetic characteristics. Based on the Ishihara (1979)'s criterion, Alkali-feldspar granite is classified as ilmenite-series granite, whereas others are classified as magnetite-series granite. In the eastern part of the study area including the Tertiary basin area, declinations of site-mean characteristic remanent magnetizations (ChRMs) show clockwise deflection of more than 30 from the reference direction of east Asia. Both along and in the adjacent region of the Ulsan fault-line, however, no deflection of remanent direction was observed. A boundary line between the deflected and undeflected site-mean ChRMs is defined in this study, which runs roughly parallel to the Ulsan fault-line at the distance of about 6km eastward from the fault-line. We suggest that this newly found boundary line, which we call Yonil tectonic line, released dextral simple shear stress acted in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula during the opening stage of the East Sea in the Early Cenozoic.

  • This study is for geochemical relationships between ginseng and soil from three representative soil types from Keumsan, shale, phyllite and granite. In the weathered soils(avg.), shale area is high in the most of element, but low in the granite area. In the field soils(avg.), the shale area is mainly high, but low in the granite area and comparing with ages, most of elements are high in the 2 year soils, but low in the 4 year soils. In the host rocks(avg.), high average element contents are shown in the phyllite and shale areas. In the ginsengs, differences of the element contents with ages are not clear, but show high element contents in the 2 year ginsengs of the shale and phyllite areas, and low contents in the 4 year ginsengs of the granite area. In the relative ratios(weathered soil/field soil), most of elements from the shale area are high, above 1, suggesting high element contents in the weathered soils of the shale area relative to the granite and phyllite areas. In the relative ratios(weathered soil/host rock), most of elements Ewe above 1, suggesting the high element contents in the weathered soils relative to the host rocks. Relative ratios (soil/ginseng) of the element contents are generally several times to ten times. Among the ginsengs of different ages with the same area, the relative ratios are small in the Cu and Zn contents. Regardless of the areas, big differences of the relative ratios are found in the Co and small differences are in the Cu and Zn, which suggest that differences between soils and ginsengs are big in the Co contents and small in the Cu and Zn contents. Regardless of the ages, differences among relative ratios are small in granite area relative to the shale. area, which suggest more similarity of the granite soils with ginsengsrelativetotheshalearea.

An Evaluation of Shear Strength Parameters$(c,\varphi)$ for Weathering Decomposed Granite Soil (화강풍화토의 전단정수$(c,\varphi)$ 평가)

  • Both the chemical components and the physical and mechanical properties of the compacted and undisturbed weathered granite soils were estimated to investigate the influences of the degree of weathering and saturation on the shear strength. The weathered granite soils used in this study were taken from six different sites in Korea. The results showed that the shear strength of weathered granite soil decreased with increasing the degree of weathering and saturation. Under the normal stresses less that 40kPa, the shape of Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope followed curved or hyperbolic relationship and a half of cohesion value obtained by the common shear test was observed. Using the Sueoka's method, the values of CWI were ranged from 21.5 to 31.26 which can be characterized as a completely weathered granite soil. Large decrease in shear strength and remarkable variation in dilatancy were observed in saturated granite soil compared to unsaturated soil. It was also found that the shear strength of undisturbed weathered granite soil of Pungam site can be expressed approximately by the equation of ${(\tau)_{sat}= 1.0(\tau)_{unsat}-12.48}$ and this equation can be extended to the other sites considered in this study.

  • When enforced earth is used for the retain wall and four walls, the most important thing would be how to maximize the land utilization. Accordingly, in case of enforced earth, we pile up the minimal height of earth$(20\sim30cm)$ and harden the earth using a static dynamic hardening machine. In this paper, we tried to analyze and. compare the stress transformation characteristics of reinforced weathered granite soil. with geosynthetics when repetitive load is added to the enforced earth structure and when static load is added. The purposes of the study are as follows; 1) To compare and analyze non reinforced weathered granite soil and reinforced weathered granite. soil by executing a unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests. 2) To identify the strength characteristics of weathered granite soil reinforced with geotextile due to the repetitive dynamic loads through comparison of the stress due to the static load and the repetitive dynamic loads.

Physuical characteristics of crushed aggregates in Korea (한반도 산림골재의 물성특성)

  • In the last decade, the supply of natural aggregates has been continuously increased due to the other types of aggregates. In general, aggregates constitute 70-80% of the total volume of concrete, so the quality of aggregates is main factor controlling physical characteristics of concrete. For this reason, physical properties of aggregate according to different rock types were studied. The majority of crushed aggregates is taken out of granite, gneiss, sandstone, andesite, basalt and so forth. The physical properties of these rock types were tested and most of them fell within the acceptable limit on the base of Korean standard regulation. The major lithology of the crushed aggregates is granite and gneiss, both of which are marked for more than 50% of total lithology thpes in Korea. A to the physical properties of granite, the high specific gravity coincides with low porosity, low absorption ratio, while the abrasion and soundness index show, in general, no specific trend. It has been assumed that slight differences of the physical properties of granite aggregates are related with those of the mineral composition, grain size, and so on. In comparison to granite, the physical properties of gneiss have little correlation one after another. This trend is related to different mineral composition, grain size and typical sheet fractures typically prevailing in the texture of gneiss. Spatial pattern of physical properties shows that high specific gravity of granite coincides only with low porosity and absorption ratio in all provinces except Cheolla province, and high specific gravity of gneiss coincides with low porosity and absorption ratio only in Cheolla and Gandwon provinces.

The Study of the Characteristics and the Proprieties of the Granite Observing Results in the Elementary Students' Scientific Inquiry Activities (과학적 탐구활동에서 나타난 초등학생들의 화강암 관찰결과의 특징과 타당성 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and proprieties of the granite observing results in the 4th grades elementary students' scientific inquiry activities. For this, the 4th, 94 students participated in granite observing activity which had objects to collecting applicable scientific facts for the distinguishing granite among the volcanic rocks. Following are the study results. First, the 829s of total results (879s) were admitted as the facts, but the rest, 50s were not the facts but the inference results. Second, the 542s results which were related to the shape, weigh, size, smell, sound, and touch (feeling) containing glittering of the rock specimen were the useless for the inquiry objects. And only the 85s results were the scientific facts which were deserved the admitting propriety for the inquiry objects. Third, the 185s results which were targeting to the particles (minerals) on the rock specimen were the admitting facts, but the 163s facts which were related to color, size and shape of the particles were deserved as admitting propriety for the inquiry objects. Consequently, the focusing on the proprieties of the granite observing results in the elementary students' scientific inquiry activities, only the 248 results (28.2%) of the total 879s were the admitting proprieties as the meaningful scientific facts in the scientific inquiry activities.

Dynamic Deformation Characteristics of Granite Weathered Soils Using RC/TS Tests (공진주/비틂전단시험을 이용한 화강풍화지반의 동적변형특성)

  • In Korea, around one - third of the country is occupied by granite, and granite weathered soils are widely distributed. Most of the research on this soil has been performed using reconstituted specimens because of the extreme difficulty of undisturbed sampling due to the sensitive particle structures. Therefore, the comparisons of deformational characteristics, which is expressed in terms of shear and Young's moduli and damping ratio, obtained from the undisturbed and reconstituted specimens are important for the reliable understanding of soil behavior. In this study, the resonant column and torsional shear tests were performed on granite weathered soils in Korea, and the deformation characteristics of undisturbed and reconstituted soil on granite weathered soils were evaluated and compared.

Characterization of Freezing-Thawing on the Artificial Weathering of $TiO_2$ Loaded Granite and Their Physical Property ($TiO_2$가 담지된 화강암의 인공풍화에 미치는 수분의 동결-융해의 평가와 물리적 성질)

  • An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effect of freezing-thawing and air pollutants on the weathering of $TiO_2$ loaded granite. And the granite was coated with $TiO_2$ catalyst and tested. After freezing-thawing and air pollutants experiments the mineral compositions of the granite surface were lower then that of the fresh granite. Density of the weathered granite was steadily decreased from $2.60g/cm^3\;to\;2.55{\sim}2.56g/cm^3$, but absorption ratio and porosity were slightly increased. From these results, it was expected that granite could be weathered by freezing-thawing md air pollutants. In the case of $TiO_2$ was coated to the granite, the compressive strength and absorption ratio were slightly enhanced compared to the $TiO_2$ non-coated granite. Therefore, the $TiO_2$ coating method tested in this study considered to be a viable method to assist in the conservation of granite from environmental contaminants.

'Hillslope Erosion Assessment using 137Cs radionuclide in Granite and Sedimentary rock basins in South Korea'

  • The soil erosion processes have estimated using spatial distribution of 137Cs radionuclide in Granite and Sedimentary Hillslopes in South Korea. The local variability of 137Cs inventory indicates that was related positively to organic matter content, clay content and water content and negatively to hydraulic permeability and slope gradient for bulk samples in different landforms within Granite and Sedimentary rock basins. The vertical variability of 137Cs inventory shows that most of 137Cs concentration and organic matter were accumulated between 0 and 2cms and gradually decrease with soil depth in incremental samples in both basins. The vertical variability of 137Cs inventories shows that 137Csinventories increase as we go to toward downslope in both basins. Finally, the soil loss values indicate that hillslope erosion processes are more intensive in Granite rock basin than those in Sedimentary rock basin.

An Experimental Study on the Sorption of U(VI) onto Granite

  • The sorption of U(Vl) on a domestic granite is studied as a function of experimental conditions such as contact time, solution-solid ratio, ionic strength, and pH using a batch procedure. The distribution coefficients, $K_{d}$'s, of U(VI) are about 1-100mL/g depending on the experimental conditions. The sorption of U(VI) onto granite particles is greatly dependent upon the contact time, solution-solid ratio, and pH, but very little is dependent on the ionic strength. It is noticed that an U(VI)-carbonate ternary surface complex can be formed in the neutral range of pH. In the alkaline range of pH above 7, U(VI) sorption onto granite particles is greatly decreased due to the formation of anionic U(VI)-carbonate aqueous complexes.s.
