It is generally found that geography majors' progression in society has a very limited scope in Korea and this is one of the causes of lessening geographers' job market. As an attempt to draw a solution to this problem, this paper, by a close examination of the French case, tries to discuss the possibility of geographers' participation in the public sector. Geographers' participation in political and social issues has long history. They acted as providers of geographical knowledge on human and physical features of the world and also as counsellors for effective administration and politics. French geographers evaluate that it is the characteristics of geography that enable geographers to progress into the public sector. They also perceive that such fields as regional development, environment, economy, tourism, international politics are possible ones for geographers. Some implications can be drawn from this case study to extend geographers' participation in the pubic sector in Korea; it is required to sustain open mind to every field of social sciences, to improve specialized as well as generalized knowledge on geographical features, and to provide practical knowledge on spatial analysis and management.

This article is a review on the Korean geographers' China studies. There were severe limits to make China study in Korea during the Cold War Period. Since 1992, the fear of Korea-China establishment of diplomatic relation Korean geographers' China studies have been increased substantially Until December 2003, 89 articles were published on the journals related to geographical study, and 9 Ph.D. dissertations were submitted to graduate school departments of geography or geography education in Korea. This is an evidence of the rapid development of China study in Korean geographical society. Early 1990s, geographers of Yanbian university located in northeast China played an important role in the development of research. After the period, Korean domestic geographers' studies have also increased. There has been a distinct progress in the fields of economic and urban geography. However, the development of theory, diversification of themes, and professional study in the macro-regional scale could be proposed as the tasks of future research.

Geography in America over the last 30 years has witnessed much positive growth： there are several reasons for this. firstly, Geographers are actively promoting their discipline to public school students, undergraduates and the general public. Secondly, Geographers in America have strengthened the discipline through a gradual, but quite noticeable shift in emphasis. This study aims to analyze empirically the scale of region that has been covered in "The Journal of the Korean Geographical Society(대한지리학회지)" and "The Journal of the Korean Association of Regional Geographers(한국지역지리학회지)" over the last 20 years. Generally speaking, it was found that "The Journal of the Korean Geographical Society" has published a relatively more number of articles with larger scale of region and "The Journal of the Korean Association of Regional Geographers" has published more articles with smaller scale of region than the counterpart journal. Also, this study has revealed that the ratio of the studies in both journals utilizing both town/village scale(읍 면 스케일) and city/county scale(시 군 스케일) has increased continuously with marginal fluctuations. On the other hand, the ratio of the studies in both journals combining single metropolis/province scale(시 도 스케일), multiple metropolis/province scale(시 도보다 큰 스케일), and state scale(국가 스케일) has decreased continuously in general. In sum, this study is expected to offer useful data as well as future research direction to the Korean geographers.

Geography as a field of learning had its beginnings among the scholars of ancient Greece. The emergence of modern Geography was much due to the collection and classification of information about overseas areas. Today, world regional geography, which may be called area studies in other social sciences, is regarded as an introductory geography course in many American universities. World regional geography, however, has been much neglected by Korean geographers. Many factors have made Korean geographers not concentrate their efforts to area studies. The exterior factors include the great expenses for the area studies' fieldworks, and the many geographers' involvement in the writing of geography textbooks and atlases for school students. The interior factors include all the ethno-centric, mysterious, and authoritarian perspectives a large number of Korean geographers strongly stick to.

This paper deals with the research trend of world geography (excluding geography of Korea) in Korean geographers' academic society through the analysis of the articles published during the last 21 years in three Korean geographical journals(Journal of the Korean Geographical Society, Journal of Korean Association of Regional Geographers, and Journal of Cultural and Historical Geography). The portion of articles concerned with world geography is relatively the lowest during the years 1990-1994, relatively the highest during the years 1995-1999, and rather decreasing during the years 2000-2010. The research areas of the articles concerned with world geography are mostly limited to USA, Japan, China, and Europe. It is not only expected that the more research on world geography should be done by Korean geographers but also that the research areas should be expanded in worldwide areas at this time when Korea is entering an international, global, and multi-cultural society.
