The number of people over sixty five years old is steadily rising and the elderly housing we continuously increasing. Regarding such a trend this research has been focused to propose the methodology of lighting design for elderly people. For this purpose, we researched the basic theory of lighting design through literature review, first. In addition, measurement and analysis of the light environment and light plan in elderly housing has been carried out by case studies. And we organized lighting scenario by the daily life-pattern of the elderly, and than planned lighting interface to be easy to control.
Purpose: This study identified the effects of chronic disease number, quality of sleep and, serum serotonin concentration on the elderly's depression in order to provide basic data for the development of intervention program to effectively prevent and manage depression of the elderly living in the community. Methods: The study surveyed 207 people aged 65 or older living in the community. The general characteristics of the subjects, the number of chronic diseases, the quality of sleep (PSQI-K), the hematological test (Serotonin) and the depression (K-GDS) were statistically analyzed using SPSS/WIN 23.0. Results: It was shown that the elderly's depression differed significantly depending on the number of chronic diseases, the quality of sleep, and serum serotonin concentration, and that the variable that most affected depression was the quality of sleep. Next, the number of chronic diseases and serum serotonin levels were the variables affecting the depression of the elderly. Conclusion: In order to prevent and manage the depression of the elderly in the future, treatment and education for diseases and depression should be provided to the subjects. In particular, nursing interventions are needed to improve the quality of sleep for the elderly. Health care programs should also be provided, such as providing nutritional supplements to provide serotonin and increasing daytime activities.
The purpose of this study were to examine the perception and behavior for preparing their old age according to the attitudes of middle aged people toward the elderly. In order to achieve this purpose, the survey was conducted with 441 middle aged people from Daegu and Kyungpook. Major findings of this study are as follows; First, there were statistically significantly different attitudes toward the elderly according to the personal variables such as gender, age, education, occupation and income. Second, the group, who had experience in the living together and contacting with the elderly, had a positive attitude toward the elderly. Third, the more positive attitudes toward the elderly, the better perception for preparing their old age. Finally, the more positive attitudes toward the elderly, the better behavior for preparing their old age.
The purposes of this study were to estimate nutritional intakes of the long-lived elderly and to obtain the data for establishing dietary guidelines that may be recommended for the general population for the sake of longevity. The subjects of the study were 300 elederly people of age over 85 years living in Kyungpook Sung-Ju area who had no problem in daily living. Four times of food consumption survey were carried out seasonally by the repeated 24-hr recall method for one year. Mean daily energy intakes and RDA percentage of energy intakes of the male and female subjects were estimated as 1222 kcal(67.9%) and 1047 kcal(65.4%) respectively. Mean daily intakes of nutrients were estimated as 38.3g for protein, 287mg for calcium, 5.8mg for iron, 314R.E. for vitamin A, 0.6mg for vitamin B1 and 0.43mg for vitamin B2 The mean RDA percentages of nutrients intake were 64.4% and 59.8% for protein in male and female, 39.8% for Ca, 48.3% for Fe, 44.9% for vitamin A, 60% for vitamin B1, and 35.8% for B2. The average PFC ratio of energy-yielding nutrients throughout the year in male and female were 15.1 : 15.2 : 69.7 and 13.8 : 13.2 : 73.0 respectively. The mean daily intakes of energy and most of nutreints were significantly high in winter season. The contribution of plant food sources to nutrient intakes were over 60% for protein and fat, 50% for calcium, and 70% for iron. Long-lived elderly people an Sung-Ju, Kyungpook showed considerably smaller physiques compared to the avergae Korean elderly, however their average BMI fell in normal range. The subjects were consuming much less energy and nutrients compared to the present Korean RDA for the elderly over age 75. The subject showed relatively good health state in spite of low intakes of energy and nutrients. Therefore it seems to be necessary to establish a set of new RDA for the elderly over age 8.5.
To promote health status, strategies and interventions to improve nutrition should be based on the proper diagnosis of the subject's eating patterns. The elderly usually have traditional food habits and preferences, and it is very difficult to change them. This study was designed to identify dietary behavior and food preference of the elderly, in order to provide baseline data for the Elderly Nutrition Intervention Program for the Public Health Center. A survey questionnaire was made for use by trained interviewers to query 151elderly people from 5 community elderly centers located in Suwon, Korea. The majority of them ate regularly and partook of all available side dishes. Their major dietary problems were frequent consumptions of salty foods, and eating too quickly. They consumed grains and vegetables regularly, but seldomly ate dairy products, fruits, meat and food prepared with oil. They also tended to eschew ready made processed food, high cholesterol food, and fast food. Also they did not dine out as much as younger people. Desirable eating habit score were not significantly influenced by socioeconomic variables and nutrition-related characteristics. These included nutrition knowledge, Nutritional Risk Index(NRI) and a score of health concerns. However, meal balance scores were significantly higher in the younger group(p<.05), the higher household income group(p<.05). According to stepwise multiple regression analysis, NRI was the most important determinant of a desirable eating habit score for the male elderly, whereas the score of health concerns was mo9st important for female elderly subjects. The greatest predictor of the meal f balance score was nutrition knowledge. The elderly liked sweet tasting food, grains, rice, stews and Korean style soups. They disliked sour food, dairy products, processed food, and bread. The results indicate that the Elderly Nutrition Education Program should focus on increasing consumption of dairy products, fruits and food with oil, prepared by traditional Korean cooking methods. It also suggests that the program planning should consider the socioeconomic status of the elderly, such as income and education level, as well as concern for health.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide understanding of the meaning of 'Yangsaeng' through lived experience of the elderly who practiced Kouk-Sun-Do. Methods: A hermeneutic phenomenological methodology developed by Max van Manen was adopted. The data were collected from the interviews and observations on the actual experience of 9 people who were over 65 years old and practiced Kouk-Sun-Do from August to December 2006. Results: The essential themes were discovered as 'body in comfort', 'spouting vigor', 'improving selfconfidence', 'developing one's mind', 'setting oneself in order', 'being aware of the value of Kouk-Sun-Do', 'recognizing importance of value of getting along' Conclusion: Therefore, practicing "Kouk-Sun-Do" is a suitable exercise for the elderly, as an effective nursing interventions for improving the quality of life of older people.
In accordance with the aged society, oral health care for the elderly is considered important to maintain general health. Although the role of dental hygienists is essential for proper health management of the oral cavity, research on the care system for the elderly people's oral health and on the role of dental hygienists in the field of elderly welfare is still insufficient. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the status of Korean elderly welfare system and dental hygienists by comparing them with those in Japan, a precedent of aged society. First, we compared and investigated the Japanese long-term insurance system, which provides an institutional basis for a long-term care system for the elderly in Korea. Second, the elderly welfare law and care system, focusing on oral care, were examined. Lastly, in elderly care, we analyzed the distinctions between Korea and Japan regarding dental hygienists' role and scope of work. Taken together, as a precedent of aged society, Japan has shown well-specialized and systematic welfare for the elderly compared with Korea. With the development of the welfare system for the elderly in Japan, the role and the work scope of dental hygienists have been expanded to improve quality of life of elderly people, as a key professional for elderly oral care. Therefore, we should perceive the need for improvement of long-term care insurance and the expansion of dental hygienists' work in Korea. In conclusion, these results could be used as basic data for improving the elderly welfare system and developing dental hygienists in Korea.
The present study is intended to supply the welfare program for the elderly people with the data to be acquired by comparing and analyzing life satisfaction and health perception of 797 elders living in Jeonbuk area on the past, present and future dimensions. The results could be drawn as follows: 1. The subjects are composed of 50.8% females and 40.2% males. The majority of them are urbanites, living with spouses, dependent on children financially and suffering currently from illness. 2. With regard to their consciousness of health and life satisfaction, most subjects are not confident in their health but are satisfied with their current life. 3. As for socio-demographic characters by gender, male elders are mostly living with spouses(p=.000) and diseases(p=.000). Whereas, most females are left without spouses(p=.000) but with diseases(p=.000). 4. In terms of life satisfaction in connection with health perception by gender, elderly men seem to be significantly satisfied with their life in the past(p=.001), present(p=.000) and future(p=.000). Likewise, elderly women are significantly satisfied with their life in the past(p=.000), present(p=.000) and future(p=.000). Both men and women turned out to be satisfied with their present life, particularly. From the above outcomes, it may be summed up as follows: All the subjects in this survey are currently suffering from some kinds of diseases and have, thus, no confidence in their health. As far as they remain confident in their health, they can be satisfied with their life in the past, present and future dimensions, particularly for the present. In conclusion, the consciousness of one's health has great influence on one's life satisfaction especially in elderly stage. It seems, therefore, imperative to help the elderly people to control their health continuously to make them confident in their health and to develop welfare programs to meet diverse needs of the elderly people.
In Korea, there has been a rapid increase in the number and proportion of elderly people, especially in rural areas, due to improvements in the standard of living and medical technology. One of the main health problems for the elderly people is dental health, which can cause nutritional and health problems. Thus, in this study, the dental health status and health status in relation to nutritional intake were analyzed. A total of 155 rural-dwelling elderly people (68 males, 87 females) over the ages of 65 participated in this study. The subjects were classified into three groups; the no denture no teeth group, denture user group, and natural teeth group. The dietary intake, biochemical health status, and anthropometry were evaluated. Can-pro 3.0 was used to assess dietary intakes and the SPSS 12.0 program was used for statistical analysis. The results showed that the natural teeth group had better nutritional and dietary intake status than the no denture no teeth group. The dietary assessment showed that there were differences in food intakes among the groups, which depended on their dental health status. In conclusion, dietary management is required for the elderly since each group has a different ability to chew food depending on their dental health status. In addition, the elderly will need different therapeutic diets because of the high prevalence of chronic degenerative diseases.
This study was designed to determine the attitude and degree of satisfaction of recipients toward the meal service program for elderly people. Nine hundred and eight elderly people(male: 301, female: 607) were interviewed by trained personnel. The results were as follows. Forty two percent of them had no income and 43.8% of the respondents were supported economically by the government. Their main reasons for attending the free congregated meal program was economic hardship(37.9%) The channels of becoming aware of the free meal program were through their friends(33.4%) and the meal service centers were located in the respondents residence area(36.0%) Thus any other advertisement from local government of official channels about the free meal program were not effective for the elderly 26.9% of the respondents felt inconvenience in visiting the meal service centers because they had some difficulty in walking, 53.5% of them however answered that they didn t have any complains and were quite satisfied with the meal service. The average satisfaction score for the free meal service was 63.4(maximum score 75) As for each evaluation item respondents were highly satisfied with volunteers attitude in meal serving(4.58$\pm$0.65: maximum 5 point) The evaluation score of females was generally lower than that of males(p<0.05) Oncemore, respondents who were in lowere socio-economic classes were marked by having significantly lower satisfaction scores for the meal service compared with higher scocio-economic classes. For the welfare of elderly people, meal service programs should be extended to more elderly persons and developed considering the elderlys ecological factors.
