This study was carried out to investigate the four-week oral toxicity of the CH-50002 (Vibril vaccine) in beagle dogs. The beagle dogs were orally administered for 28 days, with dosage of 0.5, 5, 50 mg/kg/day, respectively. Animals treated with CJ-50002(Vibrio Vaccine) did not cause any death and show any clinical signs. There were not significantly different from the control group in urinalysis, ocular examination, hematological, serum biochemical value and histopathological examination. Therefore, CJ-50002(Vibrio Vaccine) was not indicated to have any toxic efent in the beagle dogs, when ti was orally administered below the dosage 50mg/kg/day for rour weeks.
Acute toxicity of typhoid vaccine was investigated using Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and beagle dogs. SD rats and beagle dogs were administered intramuscularly with dosages of 0,. 0.2, 0.1, 0.05 and 0.025 mg/kg, respectively. In animals administered with typhoid vaccine, there were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs and autopsy findings. Therefore, LD50 of typhoid vaccine was considered to be higher than 0.2 mg/kg in SD rats and beagle dogs.
Lateral laminectomy was performed far spinal decompression in 7 thoracolumbar disc herniated dogs. These dogs showed upper motor neurologic signs including kyphosisi urinary dysfunction, and paraplegia or paralysis in hindlimbs. The lesions were evaluated with myelographic findings and predominated in $T_{12}-T_{13}, T_{13}-L_{1} and L_{1}-L_{2}$ discs. Five dogs which were operated within 48 hours after the onset of paraplegia were recovered from kyphosis and sustained the normal gait and walkings furthermore normal urination and defecation were presented within 3 days of postoperation. One dog was expired with steroid induced intestinal bleeding. The other dog operated on 96 hours after the onset of paraplegia was not recovered from neurologic deficits. Spinal decompression technique was considered to be useful method fur improving neurological problems resulted firom thoracolumbar disc herniation, if dogs are operated on early stage of the onset of paraplegia.
The biological father of two Golden Retriever puppies was determined between two proposed stud dogs by using microsatellite DNA analysis. DNA was obtained from all the relevant dogs by buccal swabbing and three loci of tetranucleotide repeat microsatellite were PCR-amplifiedl and analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and silver staining. One of the two proposed stud dogs was assigned as the biological father of the puppies by the genotyping. The result demonstrated that the microsatellite DNA analysis is a simple, efficient method of paternity test in dogs.
Four out of 15 dogs were successfully induced diabetes mellitus with intravenous iqiection of 30 mg of streptozotgin and 50 mg of alloxan monohydrate per kilogram body weight and maintained more than 9 weeks without iqiection of insulin or oral hypoglycemic sgent Histopathologicallyi these four dogs have typical diabetic lesions such as degeneration and vacuolation of pancreatic islet cells, and fatty change of liver at necropsy in the end of study. Serum glucose level increased dramatically at 24 hours post-injection but serum fructosamine level increased gradually and reached plateau at 31-41 days post-injection of streptozotocin and alloxan. Serum fructosamine concert%lion correlated very well with serum glucose concentration of preceding 4-7 weeks in experimentally induced diabetic dogs. Our data suggest that serum fructosamine reflects mean glucose concentration of preceding 4-7 weeks in experimentally induced diabetic dogs.
The effects of enternal feeding on wound healing and intestinal movement in 30 gastrotomized dogs were investigated. The dogs were divided into enteral and parenteral feeding groups. Wound healing was evaluated with tensile strengh on the suture line 4 days after surgery and intestinal movement with the auscultation of borborygmus sound in the abdomen. There was no difference of the tensile strengh on the suture line between enternal and parenteral feeding groups. Borborygmus was auscultated in all dogs of the enteral feeding groups from day2 after surgery. It was thought that enteral feeding had no detrimental effect on wound healing as compared with the parenteral feeding and had good effect on the prevention of ileus in gastrotomized dogs.
Clinical outcomes of dogs treated for end-stage otitis extema with total ear canal ablation (TECA) combining lateral bullar osteotomy (LBO) at Veterinary medical teaching hospital of Seoul National University from 2001 to 2003 were evaluated. In 14 dogs, 23 ears, the operation was successful in alleviating all clinical signs of otitis externa and media. The main complication after TECA combining LBO were facial nerve paralysis and the others were recurrent infection and the formation of fistula and cyst. Two cases were tumors. One was ceruminous gland adenoma and the other was squamous cell carcinoma. The operation successfully resolved the original problems in 100% (23 of 23) of the surgically treated ears of these dogs.
This study was performed to evaluate the effects of ocular bacteria and tear lactoferrin on the Tear Staining Syndrome(TSS) in poodle dogs. Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Micrococcus and Pseudomonas were the most Prevalent microorganisms isolated in normal eyes of poodle dogs, whereas the predominant isolates in the poodle dogs with TSS were Micrococcus, Staptococcus and Staphylococcus. There were no significant differences between the normal and tear-stained poodle dogs in the quantity of tear lactoferrin. In vitro hair staining experiment, bacteria isolated from the eyes with TSS and lactoferrin didn't stain hair. The results have shown that either ocular bacteria or tear lactoferrins were not related to the TSS.
In 2001, eight small-sized dogs and three medium-sized dogs with or without clinical signs such as vomiting, dyspnea and enlargement of superficial lymph nodes were diagnosed as lymphoma by radiography, ultrasonography and cytology. Among them, six were female mainly over 7 years old and others were male around 4 years old. There were six cases of multicentric form lymphoma, three cases of mediastinal form, an alimentary and an extranodal form, respectively. Radiographic findings were enlarged cranial mediastinal lymph node, sternal lymph node, and tracheobronchial lymph nodes on thorax and hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and enlarged sublumbar lymph nodes on abdomen. Ultrasonographic findings revealed enlarged abdominal lymph nodes and multifocal hypoechoic lesions on the liver. Especially, severe wall thickness of small bowel was observed in a dog with alimentary lymphoma. Three dogs were dead during chemotherapy, and three dogs were dead without any treatment. Three dogs did not return and two treated dog showed normal status. Radiography and ultrasonography, although not giving an final diagnosis for lymphoma, are useful for assessment and diagnosis of lymphoma.
This study was performed to find out how the training for overcoming the fear of and adapting to unfamiliar environments and noises, such as exposures at different levels to noises of a helicopter, affected German Shepherd dogs' characteristics to a specific condition. One hundred and nine German Shepherd dogs were tested in this study. There were no significant differences between genders, tasks, experiences boarding a helicopter, tempers and lengths of time spent with the handler in fearful scores. The dogs at different ages showed significant differences in their fearful scores at the time of the arrival of the helicopter(p<0.001) and approaching to it(p<0.01). In conclusion in the cases of the German Shepherd dogs, there's a need to re-examine the existing training methods for overcoming the fear of and adapting to unfamiliar materials and noises.
