최근 국내발병 개 디스템퍼에 대한 역학적 조사 (Epidemiological Observation on Recent Outbreaks of Canine Distemper in Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 최근 국내에서 발병하는 개 디스템퍼(CD)의 역학적 조사를 위하여 2002년 2월부터 2002년 10월까지 강원도, 경기도와 서울특별시의 10개 동물병원 수의사에 의하여 CD에 감염된 것으로 잠정진단된 315마리의 개를 대상으로 하였다. 개체의 신상자료와 임상증상을 조사하였으며 CD를 확진하기 위하여 혈액의 단핵구나 결막 상피세포에서 CDV의 NP gene을 RT-PCR로 증폭하였다. CD로 의심되는 총 315마리 중 162마리가 CD 양성으로 진단 되었으며 성별과 종에 따른 발병율에는 차이가 없었다. 나이별 분포는 백신을 접종해야 하는 기간인 6-18주에 가장 높은 분포를 보였으며 1세 이상에서도 소수 발병하였다. CD환축은 호흡기 증상, 위장관 증상, 눈의 증상 등 다양한 증상이 나타나 임상증상에 근거하여 CD를 진단하기에 어려움이 있었다. CD 양성의 개 중 84.6%가 백신을 한번도 맞지 않았거나 예방접종을 제대로 실시되지 않은 상태였으며 CDV에 대한 혈청 중화 항체가는 96.9%의 개가 방어수준 이하인 1:16 이하를 나타내었다. CD 양성 162 마리와 CD음성으로 진단 된 153마리의 혈청 중화 항체가 사이에는 통계적인 유의차가 인정되었으며 (P<0.05), CD 양성 개 중에 생존 한 개들은 폐사한 개들보다 중화 항체가 높은 경향을 보였다. 눈의 증상과 신경증상을 보인 개체들은 다른 개체들에 비해 생존율이 유의하게 낮은 것으로 나타났다 (P<0.05). 본 연구의 결과 현재 국내에서 발병하고 있는 개 디스템퍼는 예방접종의 실패에 따라 개들의 항체 수준이 전반적으로 낮은 것에 기인하는 것으로 판단되므로 예방접종에 대한 전반적인 검토가 필요하며 예방을 위하여 감염에 취약한 시기에는 감염원에 접촉을 최소화하는 것이 중요할 것으로 판단되었다.

Butorphanol의 투여가 장문합술 후 개의 행동에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Butorphanol on Behavior after Intestinal Anastomosis in Dogs)

  • 본 연구는 개에서 장문합술 후 비침습적인 행동관찰을 통해 통증을 평가하기 위하여 수행되었으며, 또한 이를 토대로 butorphanol의 진통효과에 대해 연구하였다. 본 실험에서 대조군은 마취를 실시하였으나 장문합술은 시행되지 않았다. 진통제 투여군의 5마리 개들에게는 장문합술을 실시하였고 butorphanol을 투여하였다. 진통제 비투여군의 5마리 개들에게는 진통제 투여 없이 장문합술을 실시하였다. 진통제 투여군의 개들은 수술 전 그리고 수술직후 butorphanol(0.4mg/kg, IM)이 투여되었고, 반면에 대조군과 진통제를 투여하지 않은 군에서는 동일한 양의 멸균 생리식염수가 투여되었다. 개의 행동은 마취 후 400분 동안 비디오테이프로 기록되었고, 그 시간에 실험자는 매 80분마다 개와 상호작용을 하였다. 각각의 상호작용에서, 실험자는 관찰된 행동을 바탕으로 멜버른 대학의 통증 측정방법을 이용하여 통증 점수를 기록하였다. 한 사람의 관찰자에 의해 정량화 된 상호작용과 비 상호작용의 행동을 측정하기 위하여 한 개체에 집중하는 연속적 표본 추출 방법이 적용되었다. 발성은 마취 후 400분 동안 녹음하였고 소리 길이, 소리 강도, 소리 pitch와 1-4 포먼트를 분석하였다. 외과수술은 통증측정 점수를 증가시켰다. 실험자와의 상호작용 중에서 수술 후 인사하는 행동이 감소되었다. 진통제를 투여한 수술군과 위약을 투여한 군사이의 차이점은 정량화된 행동측정과 발성을 통하여 구별할 수 있었다. Butorphanol을 투여한 수술군과 위약을 투여한 군 사이에는 유의적인 차이를 관찰할 수 있었다 (p< 0.05).

개에서 Xylazine-diazepam-ketamine 병용마취 시 두 가지 근육내 투여 용량 비교 (A Comparison of Two Intramuscular Doses of a Xylazine-Diazepam-Ketamine Combination in Dogs)

  • 많은 약물들이 개의 진정 및 마취를 위해 근육내 투여를 통해 사용되고 있다. 개 마취를 위한 많은 근육내 병용투여 방법이 정립되었으나 xylazine-diazepam-ketamine 병용투여에 대한 연구는 미흡하다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 개에서 xylazine-diazepam-ketamine 병용투여의 영향을 연구하는 것이다. 12 마리의 혼혈 종 개를 사용하였으며 diazepam (0.5 mg/kg), xylazine (1.1 mg/kg)에 두 가지 용량의 ketamine (5 mg/kg; group 1, 10 mg/kg; group 2)을 근육내로 투여하여 비교하였다. 마취 시간은 group 2에서 group 1과 비교 시 유의적으로 길었으며 혈압은 약물 투여 후 두 군에서 모두 유의적으로 증가 하였다. $S_aO_2$ 수준도 약물 투여 후 두 군에서 모두 유의적으로 감소 하였다. 마취는 두 군에서 모두 적절히 이루어졌다. 본 실험 결과 diazepam (0.5 mg/kg), xylazine (1.1 mg/kg)에 두 가지 용량의 ketamine (5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg)의 병용투여는 개에서 짧은 시간의 깊은 진정 및 마취 시에 사용할 수 있는 효과적인 방법으로 생각된다.

다섯 마리의 개에서 발생한 아포크린샘암종 증례 (Clinical Presentation and Management of Five Dogs with Apocrine Gland Adenocarcinoma of Anal Sac)

  • 2006-2008년에 5마리의 환자가 아포크린샘암종으로 진단받았다. 품종은 다양하였으며 진단 당시 평균 연령은 11세이었다. 이들 중 3마리에서 종양으로 인한 고칼슘혈증이 발생하였으며, 한 마리는 화학요법(chemotherapy) 받지 않고 진단 1달 후 사망하였다. 나머지 네 마리의 환자들은 항암제 투여, 수술 등의 방법으로 치료를 받았으며 수술과 화학요법을 병행한 환자는 치료 종료 후 9개월째 완전완화(complete remission) 상태를 유지하고 있다. 화학요법만 받은 3마리의 환자들은 질병지속(stable disease) 상태로 유지되고 있으며 이 중 한 마리는 진단 후 2개월째에 사망하였다. 따라서 개의 아포크린샘암종의 치료법으로 수술 및 방사선 치료를 적용할 수 없는 경우에, 항종양제 단독 투여는 보조적으로 효과가 있는 것으로 사료된다.

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies in Stray Dogs from Various Locations in West and East Malaysia

  • Toxoplasmosis is caused by an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite; Toxoplasma gondii, which is one of the most important zoonotic parasite worldwide. In dogs, the sexual reproductive cycle of T. gondii is lacking, and the animals are not widely consumed as food, but they are vital in the mechanical transmission of the parasite. However, there is no present data on the exposure of stray dogs to T. gondii in Malaysia. The objective of this serological survey was to determine the prevalence of T. gondii antibodies (IgG) and associated factors in stray dogs in East and West Malaysia. Antibodies to T. gondii were determined in serum samples from 222 stray dogs from 6 different states in East and West Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia) using an Indirect ELISA. The seroprevalence for T. gondii was 23.4% (Confidence interval: CI 17.8-29.2%). Stray dogs from Selangor and Kuala Lumpur had the highest seroprevalence (32.4%; CI 13.2-45.5%) and lowest in those from Penang and Kedah (12.5%; CI 1.3-23.5%). Gender and breed were not associated with T. gondii seropositivity. However, adult dogs were more likely to be seropositive for T. gondii (OR=2.89; CI 1.1-7.7) compared with younger dogs. These results revealed that T. gondii is prevalent in stray dogs in the studied areas in Malaysia, and indicative of the level of environmental contamination of this parasite especially in urban areas.

Proof-of-concept study of the caninized anti-canine programmed death 1 antibody in dogs with advanced non-oral malignant melanoma solid tumors

  • Background: The anti-programmed death 1 (PD-1) antibody has led to durable clinical responses in a wide variety of human tumors. We have previously developed the caninized anti-canine PD-1 antibody (ca-4F12-E6) and evaluated its therapeutic properties in dogs with advance-staged oral malignant melanoma (OMM), however, their therapeutic effects on other types of canine tumors remain unclear. Objective: The present clinical study was carried out to evaluate the safety profile and clinical efficacy of ca-4F12-E6 in dogs with advanced solid tumors except for OMM. Methods: Thirty-eight dogs with non-OMM solid tumors were enrolled prospectively and treated with ca-4F12-E6 at 3 mg/kg every 2 weeks of each 10-week treatment cycle. Adverse events (AEs) and treatment efficacy were graded based on the criteria established by the Veterinary Cooperative Oncology Group. Results: One dog was withdrawn, and thirty-seven dogs were evaluated for the safety and efficacy of ca-4F12-E6. Treatment-related AEs of any grade occurred in 13 out of 37 cases (35.1%). Two dogs with sterile nodular panniculitis and one with myasthenia gravis and hypothyroidism were suspected of immune-related AEs. In 30 out of 37 dogs that had target tumor lesions, the overall response and clinical benefit rates were 6.9% and 27.6%, respectively. The median progression-free survival and overall survival time were 70 days and 215 days, respectively. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that ca-4F12-E6 was well-tolerated in non-OMM dogs, with a small number of cases showing objective responses. This provides evidence supporting large-scale clinical trials of anti-PD-1 antibody therapy in dogs.

반려동물과 아동의 천식증상과의 관계에 관한 연구 - 반려견 및 반려묘를 중심으로 - (Association between Pets and Asthma Symptoms in Korean Children - Focusing on Dogs and Cats -)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the association between pet ownership and asthma symptoms in Korean children. Methods: This study used data from the 8th Panel Study on Korean Children in 2015. For the final study, 1598 cases were used. Wheezing as an asthma symptom was self-reported as an outcome variable. Whether children had owned dogs or cats or not was used as an independent variable. Results: A total of 6.8% of children lived with dogs and 2.1% of children lived with cats in their homes. There were 4.0% of children who had asthma symptoms in the past year. When comparing 'children who had owned dogs for more than 12 months' with 'children who had not owned dogs', the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for 'asthma symptoms' were 1.20 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10-1.30) among male children and 2.19 (95% CI, 1.94-2.46) among female children. When comparing 'children who had owned cats for more than 12 months' with 'children who had not owned cats', the adjusted ORs for 'asthma symptoms' were 38.94 (95% CI, 35.55-42.65) among male children and 5.32 (95% CI, 4.60-6.16) among female children. When comparing 'children who had owned both dogs and cats for more than 12 months' with 'children who had not owned at all', the adjusted OR for 'asthma symptoms' was 13.22 (95% CI, 11.93-14.65), and when comparing 'children who had owned cats only' with 'children who had not owned at all', the adjusted OR for 'asthma symptoms' was 9.25 (95% CI, 8.50-10.08). Conclusions: As a result, children's asthma symptoms were higher in the case of cats than with dogs, and in the case of cats, boys were more at risk than girls. In the analysis for the risk of asthma symptoms when a dog and a cat are raised at the same time, it was statistically confirmed that the children in the home were more at risk than with single animal ownership. The results of this study can be considered to be of great importance in policy-making and for the use of educational materials in the field of environmental health.

Characterization of antimicrobial resistance and application of RFLP for epidemiological monitoring of thermophilic Campylobacter spp. isolated from dogs and humans in Korea

  • An antimicrobial susceptibility test was conducted to compare the resistance rates among Campylobacter spp. isolates from dogs (n = 50) raised under diverse conditions and humans (n = 50). More than 60% of Campylobacter (C.) jejuni from dogs and humans showed resistance to nalidixic acid, enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. C. jejuni isolates from humans showed higher resistance to tetracycline (83.3%) and ampicillin (91.3%) than those from dogs. None of the C. jejuni or Campylobacter coli isolates from humans or dogs were resistant to erythromycin. Overall, 85% of Campylobacter spp. isolates showed a multidrug resistant phenotype. Nucleotide sequencing analysis of the gryA gene showed that 100% of $NA^R/CIP^R$ C. jejuni isolates from dogs and humans had the Thr-$86^{th}$-Ile mutation, which is associated with fluoroquinolone resistance. flaA PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) typing to differentiate the isolates below the species level revealed 12 different clusters out of 73 strains. The human isolates belonged to eight different RFLP clusters, while five clusters contained dog and human isolates.

강원도 춘천 지역 개의 비만 유병률과 위험요인에 대한 단면연구 (A Cross-sectional Study on the Prevalence of Canine Obesity and Associated Risk Factors in Chuncheon, Kangwon Province)

  • As with humans, overweight or obesity is a major health concern in the companion animal population. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey of dog owners attending primary small animal veterinary practices from different areas in Chuncheon, Kangwon province, Korea was undertaken to explore the relationships between socioeconomic and other relevant risk factors associated with canine obesity. In addition, the author was to estimate the prevalence of obesity compared to published literatures for dogs. Owners were asked about dog age, neuter status, feeding habits, dog exercise, household income and owner age. The body condition score (BCS) of the dogs was also assessed. Multivariable binary logistic regression was used to assess the association between BCS and potential risk factors controlling for confounding variables, using odds ratios (OR), 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A total of 275 dogs (136 males and 139 females) aged 1-12 years (mean age $5.6{\pm}3.7$ years) were surveyed in 2013. Of these, 46.9% of dogs (n = 129) were classed as an ideal body shape (BCS = 3), 30.9% (n = 85) were overweight (BCS = 4), 8.4% (n = 23) were obese (BCS = 5) and 13.8% (n = 38) were underweight (BCS = 1 or 2). Neutered males and spayed females had the highest prevalence of obesity (43.4% and 33.9%); intact females had the lowest prevalence of obesity (31.6%). In univariable model, risk factors associated with canine obesity are multifactorial and include owner income, owner age, age of dog, neuter status, frequency of feeding per day, frequency of snacks and consultation with veterinarian on dog's weight. In final multivariable logistic regression model, dogs whose owners reported no consultation with veterinarians for weight management were significantly more likely to be obesity than ideal (OR = 7.6, 95% CI, 4.2-13.8; p < 0.0001). This study showed a high prevalence of obesity in domestic companion dogs. Since this was a cross-sectional study with small samples, the association of canine obesity with risk factors warrants more research. To the author's best knowledge, this is the first Korean study on dog body condition and obesity.

개에서 동결정액을 이용한 인공수정 - Methanol을 이용한 간이 동결방법 - (Artificial insemination with frozen semen in the dog - Simple freezing method using methanol -)

  • The semen from four male dogs which had been proven to be fertile in the past were frozen in a deep freezer at $-60^{\circ}C$ by simple freezing method using methanol and preserved at the same teperature for from 7 to 10 days. The semen were inseminated to 7 female dogs in estrus to find out the usability of this freezing method in artificial insemination for dogs. In addition, post-thaw motility and viability of sperm from two male dogs which had been fertile were also evaluated to investigate individual difference. Successful pregnancy was obtained by artificial insemination with canine semen frozen at $-60^{\circ}C$ by simple freezing method using methanol, namely, 3 bitches among 7 bitches which had been inseminated delivered puppies(42.8%). The average litter size of the whelping dogs were 4.3 puppies. The average post-thaw motility of canine sperm in the cases of conception was showen higher than those of non-conception(65.0% vs. 42.5%), along with the, same result in the average post-thaw viability between the two groups(53.3% vs, 27.5%). Individual difference of post-thaw motility and viability was obtained between two fertile dogs(p<0.05).
