  • A 13-year-old castrated Maltese dog was presented to a local animal hospital with an oral hemorrhage. An intraoral examination revealed an irregular proliferated lobular mass at the right side of the maxillary gingiva and hard palate. A surgically excised mass was requested for a histopathology examination. Histopathologically, the neoplastic foci were composed of biphasic morphologic patterns, such as primitive mesenchymal tissue and mature or immature cartilage tissue. Immunohistochemically, most of the neoplastic cells forming cartilaginous islands tested positive for S-100; the surrounding mesenchymal cells tested positive for vimentin. This paper describes a rare case of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma in the maxillary gingiva of a Maltese dog.

  • A 16-year-old, 7.4 kg, castrated male Cocker Spaniel presenting anorexia and weight loss was referred due to a splenic mass, and total splenectomy was performed to resolve clinical signs. Following surgery, the dog developed mild hyperkalemia (6.27 mmol/L) without any clinical symptoms. Further investigations were conducted to determine the cause of hyperkalemia. The serum-plasma potassium difference was measured (1.05 mmol/L), and pseudohyperkalemia was diagnosed. The cause of pseudohyperkalemia was considered as thrombocytosis after splenectomy. The dog did not receive any specific treatment to lower blood potassium. To our knowledge, we report the first case of post-splenectomy pseudohyperkalemia in a dog.

  • Amino acids, Na, K and glutathione (GSH) in red blood cells (RBCs) and hematological indices were examined in Korean dogs. A total of seven dogs possessing RBCs with high K and high glutathione (GSH)(HK/HG) were found in 42 Korean dogs : three from Cheju dog, two from Jindo dog and two from Korean mongrel. The RBCs in Korean HK/HG dog contained abnormally high aspartate (Asp), Glu and glutamine (Gln) the same as in HK/HG RBCs from Japanese Shiba dog. Two dogs possessing RBCs with HK and low GSH (HK/LG) were found in Cheju dog, and they accumulated Asp and Gln. Thus, not only the existence of HK dog was confirmed in Korean dogs, but HK/LG dog was also found. The Asp concentration in RBCs from seven of 33 LK dogs was more than $1000{\mu}mol/lc$, the same as in variant LK RBCs with defective Glu/Asp transport (LK/GAT), while it was less than $800{\mu}mol/lc$ in normal LK RBCs. Thus, there were variant dogs having RBCs with abnormally high amino acids accumulation among HK and LK Korean dogs.

  • Two Jindo dogs which show clinical signs of anorexia, weakness and exercise intolerance, were referred, and diagnosed as dirofilariasis by hematology, blood chemistry and ultrasonography. In hematology and blood chemistry, the presence of microfilariae in the blood, anemia, leukocytosis, hemoglobinuria and jaundice were revealed. In ultrasonography, heartworms were found in the right ventricle artery and pulmonary artery as structures of hyperechoic dots or streaks. In autopsy, forty odd and fifty odd of heartworms at dog 1 and dog 2, were ascertained respectively in the right ventricle and pulmonary artery.

Gross appearances included ascites and bilaterally irregular capsular surfaces of the kidneys. Characteristic microscopical findings were various sized cysts formation, shrunken glomeruli with hypercellularity, connective tissue porliferation in the interstitum, tubular dilatation and sligth leukocytic infiltration. The cause. of the renal disorder in a mongrel dog could not be determined.

After aseptic surgical preparation, a surgical method utilizing mucoperiosteal and buccal flap technique, in which accurate apposition and secure closure was very important, was used successfully. The defect of hard palate was healed completely on 10 days after surgery without any other complication.

  • A 6 yers old German Shepherd dog was diagnosed to a ruptured gallbladder subsquently causing a diffuse peritonitis with bile-contaminated ascites. Surgical exploration could not determine its causes of pathogenesis. A marked leukocytosis and increased alkaline phosphotase were the pronounced clinical pathologic features. Delayed surgical exploration was critical therapeutic failure of this particular case. An immediate surgical intervention could be a life saving therapy of choise. The author report an uncommon clinical case presentation of the ruptured gallbladder in a dog and an importance of immediate surgical correction.

  • An elective laparoscopic ovariectomy on a healthy dog revealed a cystic structure in the left ovary. The surgical procedure was successful. Histopathological examination showed the presence of a teratoma adjacent to the ovary. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of an ovarian teratoma removed by laparoscopic ovariectomy in a dog by using a multiport laparoscopic ovariectomy technique.
