  • The major aim of the Korean Pharmacogenomic Database (KPD) is to offer to users a "bridging" function, making the search for useful information easier. This database has also been established to collect unique Korean genotype data from other databases and to directly link these data to other major databases that offer more informative data. In this way, searches for information about new drug developments and easier and faster evaluation of the more complex and larger databases are possible. The KPD is located at the National Institute of Toxicological Research homepage (http://www.nitr.go.kr/nitr/contents/m134700/view.do), and offers Korean single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) information for 154 genes and haplotype information. It also compares the Korean SNP and haplotype frequencies with those of the other ethnic groups registered in the International HapMap. Through the Pharmacogenomic Information and Education facility, we also provide evaluators and the public with information about the concept of pharmacogenomic information, research trends, and the drug regulations of other countries. Because the drug responses of Koreans are not necessarily the same as those of Chinese or Japanese people, it is expected that the systematic operation of the KPD will allow the definition of racial differences and various genomic biomarkers (haplotypes or SNPs) for use in bridging studies and in the approval of new drugs.

  • Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have become popular as an approach for the identification of large numbers of phenotype-associated variants. However, differences in genetic architecture and environmental factors mean that the effect of variants can vary across populations. Understanding population genetic diversity is valuable for the investigation of possible population specific and independent effects of variants. EvoSNP-DB aims to provide information regarding genetic diversity among East Asian populations, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Non-redundant SNPs (1.6 million) were genotyped in 54 Korean trios (162 samples) and were compared with 4 million SNPs from HapMap phase II populations. EvoSNP-DB provides two user interfaces for data query and visualization, and integrates scores of genetic diversity (Fst and VarLD) at the level of SNPs, genes, and chromosome regions. EvoSNP-DB is a web-based application that allows users to navigate and visualize measurements of population genetic differences in an interactive manner, and is available online at [http://biomi.cdc.go.kr/EvoSNP/].

  • Purpose Since the number of personal information breach incidents increased, many people have perceived the importance of personal information protection, in the recent. Especially, the number of personal information breach targeting middle-aged and elderly people rapidly increases. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the factors which influence to fail of online information security behaviors among the elderly. Design/methodology/approach This study made a research model by adopting the factors deducted from the protection motivation theory. To analyze the research model, we conducted an online survey targeted on the elderly and middle ages users who have nations of Korean and Chinese respectively. Findings According to the empirical analysis result, we identified that only perceived severity and perceived vulnerability affected information security awareness. On contrast, it was also discovered that perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and response efficacy did not affect information security awareness. Additionally, the awareness of information security also did not affect information security behaviors. Middle-aged and elderly people with personal information protection education did more information security behaviors than people those who no education experiences. • In order to investigate supplement use in middle-aged and elderly outpatients suffering from age-related diseases over the last year, a cross-sectional survey was conducted from July to December 2001. The subjects were 1702 (male 731, female 971) age-related disease outpatients over age 50. Data was collected using a standardized questionnaire and in-person interviews. The prevalence of supplement use and the different categories of supplements taken by the subjects were examined using SPSS statistical package. Supplements were used by 48.9% of the subjects. The mean number of kinds of dietary supplements taken by subjects was 1.7. Chinese medicine was the most commonly used supplements in both the male and female subjects. Among the reasons for using supplements, health promotion ranked as the most common. Most of the supplement users, however, did not know or only knew roughly about the health claims of their supplements. Subjects reported the information source on supplements as family, friends or relatives followed by doctors or pharmacists. These results may provide basic information for proper supplement use among Korean middle-aged and elderly outpatients with age-related diseases.

  • In the cloud environment, users pay more attentions to their data security since all of them are stored in the cloud server. Researchers have proposed many mutual authentication schemes for the access control of the cloud server by using the smart card to protect the sensitive data. However, few of them can resist from the smart card lost problem and provide both of the forward security and the backward security. In this paper, we propose a novel authentication scheme for cloud computing which can address these problems and also provide the anonymity for the user. The trick we use is using the password, the smart card and the public key technique to protect the processes of the user's authentication and key exchange. Under the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) assumption, it is provably secure in the random oracle model. Compared with the existing smart card based authentication schemes in the cloud computing, the proposed scheme can provide better security degree.
