The purpose of this study was to identify the design concepts embedded in our traditional interior space. The majority of this research was achieved through literature review as well as examining traditional Korean houses. The major findings were summarized as follows : First, traditional Korean interior space is contemplative. This is created possible by the careful placement of indispensable furnitures and accessaries resulting in an abundance of unoccupied space. Therefore, the room assumes a peaceful atmosphere which calms the mind and creates a tranquil setting. To enjoy the placidity of Korean interior space a humble demeanor and contemplative thought are required. Next, traditional Korean interior space is modest. This is created by the moderate proportions that do not challenge human scale. Traditional Korean interior space does not dominate its surroundings but rather conforms with them. This contrasts with traditional western houses which utilizes an overbearing scale sacrificing intimate space. Thirdly, traditional Korean interior space is raw. In other words, the materials used in house retain their self-evident natural state and are not artifically manipulated to hide their inherent properties. The fundamental conceptual belief that interior space should not defy nature but instead become part of it. Lastly, traditional Korean interior space is not decorative Rooms are not congested with frivolous aesthetics. Although this does not immediately attract the people's attention, eventually the interior space establishes a unique line of communication with them.
This study is about Foucault's conceptual and methodological relevance for structural analysis of Korean traditional space design history. By Foucault's Theory, regionalism is product of the instrumentality of space, power, knowledge and provide the basis for making the operation of power both spatial and temporal. The purpose of this study is to establish topographical map of historical progress and to shed new light on the forming of identity in Korean traditional space design on the poststructural-archaeological aspect. The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, it suggests Foucault's 'Theory of archaeology'. It mentions 'historical apriori' and archive, collateral space and general grammar as theoretical background of archaeological logic. Secondly, it clarifies 'statements' depending on the conditions that is 'episteme' in which they emerge and exist within a field of discourse. And it discuss Korean traditional space design concept as a social product on the situated character of interaction in time-space. The purpose of this study is to establish a cartographic map of historical progress, and to shed light on the forming of identity in Japanese traditional space design on the schizo-analytical aspect. It adopts F. Guattari's psychoanalytic theory to the structural analysis of Japanese traditional space design. The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, it mentions Guattari's theory of Mechanical Unconscious, Schizo-analysis, Cartography, and Abstract machine as theoretical background. And, it considers the identity of Japanese traditional space constructed by various cultural sign over a long period of time as the statement of apriority. Secondly, it clarifies semiologic generation of Japanese traditional space design based on the analysis of spacial morphemes about each design stemmed from modernization process of Japan. Thirdly, it ascertains semiologic topography the representamens draw, i.e. schizo-analytic cartography from synchronic and diachronic point of view. Fourthly, it analyses traditional discourse structure in terms of generative schizo-analysis and transformational schizo-analysis with four categories- object, style, concept, strategy. Through this process, it studies the reproduction of Japanese tradition in terms of the 'social organization', and explores the way vitalized on the space-time coordinate system by the schizo-analysis of the mechanical unconscious. In conclusion, it clarifies Generative-schizo is accomplished in the level of formulating representamen, and Transformational-Schizo involves experimental mind that induce implantation of the heteromorphic elements and avant-garde experiments of abstract mechanical operation in the schizo-analysis of Japanese traditional space design. The significance of this study is to arrange an opportunity of introspection on Korean-ness seriously from inspecting logic of Japan-ness closely in traditional space design.
This study is interested in how philological interpretation of a space text were patterned so as to give the text structural cohesion. A similar philological motivation incorporates some of the notions of generative grammar. Interpretation is the process of recovering the cultural meanings expressed in discourse by analysing the linguistic structures in the light of their interactional and wider social contexts. Viewed in this light, the process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, this research contains basic concepts of signification of text and context, and theories of spacial text and context of typological structure in terms of Ricoeur's structural Hermeneutics. Secondly, it concretize a logic that traditional space context is inserted in organized attribute like emotion, spirit, nature as character of contemporary space text through typological structure. Finally, from aspect of designation theory among interpretive semantics, it shows that korean contemporary space design is incorporated with typological structure of korean traditional palace spacial context homologically through the case study of I-Hotel space design. Through this process, this study suggest that positivistic interpretation methodology by designation of text is logical thinking of Korean traditional space design.
