Concentration and Characteristic of PBDEs in Pine Needle and Soil of Ansung-city (안성 지역 소나무 잎과 토양 중 PBDEs의 농도 수준 및 특성)

  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in pine needles and soil samples from rural area were analyzed in this study. Concentrations of PBDE congeners were ranged between 0.2 and 3104 pg/g DW(dry weight) in pine needles and between 2.4 and 1997 pg/g DW in soil samples. The most abundant congener both in pine needles and soil samples was BDE-209, which was related to importation and production of deca-BDE technical mixtures in Korean industry. And BDE-99, BDE-47, BDE-100 deposited in pine needles and soil samples were closely matched with the major constituents of the penta-BDE technical mixture. Those can be interpreted as an evidence that transfer of the congeners in deca-BDE and penta-BDE technical mixtures from source to pine needle and soil occurs with broadly similar efficiency. Correlation coefficient(r) of PBDE congeners deposited in pine needles and soil samples is very significant because it implies th at there has been little weathering/degradation/alteration of the congeners generated from sources during atmospheric transport or within pine needles and soil themselves.

Tensile Properties of Metal Plate Connector in Domestic Softwood Lumber (국산 침엽수 철물접합부의 인장하중 특성)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the tensile properties of metal plate connector for the domestic major softwoods, such as Korean red pine, Korean white pine, and Japanese larch. The maximum tensile load of Korean red pine was 3,612kgf in AA type, it was 1.2 and 1.7 times higher load than that of Japanese larch and Korean white pine. In EA type, it was 2,704kgf, and 1.1 and 1.5 times higher than the loads of Japanese larch and Korean white pine. The failure modes of metal plate connector were metal plate withdrawal, plate tensile failure, and wood shear block failure. The failure mode of Korean red pine connector was tensile failure of plate, that is reason of the high tensile load resistance for metal plate connections in Korean red pine. The mechanical properties of metal plate connector could be predicted by the Foschi model parameter. In the initial stage, the Korean red pine connector was stiffer than the other species. The design values for metal plate connector per tooth was 25, 22, and 15kgf for Korean red pine, Japanese larch, and Korean white pine in AA type and 19, 17, and 13kgf in EA type.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the optimal mixing condition of three different amounts of pine leaf powder, butter and sugar for preparation of pine leaf cookies. The optimum mixing condition for pine leaf cookies was optimized by response surface methodology The optimum mixing rates of pine leaf powder, butter and sugar were 8.6 g, 252.8 g and 154.1 g for color, 8.4 g, 240.7 g and 149.8 g for appearance, 8.8 g, 246.5 g and 154.7 g for flavor and 10.9 g, 277.1 g and 134.6 g for texture respectively. The optimum mixture ratio which fulfilled all items was pine leaf powder 9.4 g, butter 270.5 g and sugar 141 g.

  • To investigate the damage on the black pine(Pinus thunbergii) by the air pollution around Ulsan Industrial Complex, forty-six plots were set up and the effects of air pollution were evaluated with the injured index of black pine. The injured index of black pine showing the degree of air pollution from 1987 to 1988 indicated that the central area of Yeochun-dong and Youngjam-dong were heavily damaged. The effective indicaters of black pine damage from air pollution in the order of importance were the color change of one-year-old branch, the ratio of fallen needle of two-year-old branch, the degree of reducing needle, and the degree of growing shoot growth. There was a reliable relationship between the content of $SO_3$ and F in the air and the injured index of black pine. There was no significant correlation between the injured index of the black pine and the content of chemical properties in soil.

  • We studied on the bark Percentage of red pine (Pinus denssiflora S & Z) and tarch (Larix Kaemdferi sargent) and obtained the results as follows: (1) For diameter classes from 8 to 38 cm in red pine. the linear equation adopts the relation of the bark percentage to the diameter more accurately than the logarithmic equation. (2) The difference between the regression equation of the bark percentage between red pine and Larch is significant and the correlation cofficient in red Pine is high so that standard error of red Pine is lower than its value of Larch. We established, therefore the tables of bark percentage for each species by applying the following regression equations. red Pine Y=10.08205-0.08794x Larch Y=10.3527-0.17071x.

High-temperature drying of Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida dimension lumber (소나무와 리기다소나무 평소각재(平小角材)의 고온건조(高溫乾燥))

  • Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et. Z.) and pitch pine(Pinus rigida Mill) $5{\times}10cm$ dimension lumber were dried in a kiln providing a cross-circulation velocity of 5 m/sec at dry-and wet-bulb temperatures of 116 and $71^{\circ}C$, followed by 3 hours at 91 and $85^{\circ}C$. Compared to dimension lumber dried lumber were as follows. 1. To dry to 10 percent moisture content, the high-temperatures schedule of Korean red pine and pitch pine lumber took less than one seventh the time required by the conventional kiln drying schedule. 2. High-temperature drying rate and conventional drying rate to 10 percent moisture content of Korean red pine lumber were 2.75 and 0.35%/hr, and those of pitch pine lumber were 3.38 and 0.46%/hr respectively. 3. Compared to lumber of both species on conventional schedule, moisture gradient of high-temperature lumber was greater. 4. Compared to lumber on conventional schedule, maximum surface checking of high-temperature lumber of both species was severer, and maximum end checking of high-temperature lumber of both species was similar to that of lumber on conventional schedule. 5. Compard to lumber on conventional schedule, Korean red pine lumber dried at high temperature showed more honeycombing, but pitch pine lumber dried at high-temperature showed significantly slighter honeycombing. 6. Compared to lumber on conventional schedule, the high-temperature lumber showed less warping lumber of both species. 7. Collapse and casehardening of Korean red pine and pitch pine lumber on both scheules were slight.

A study on Resistant Substance to Pine Needle Gall Midge Among Phenolic Compounds in Pine Needles (소나무류(類) 침엽내(針葉內)에 함유(含有)된 phenolic compounds 중 솔잎혹파리의 저항성(抵抗性) 물질(物質) 조사(調査))

  • This study was carried out to study the resistant substances to pine needle gall midge and seasonal variation of phenolic compounds in pine needles among susceptible and resistant species to pine needle gall midge. Free and water soluble phenolic compounds contained in pine needles showed seasonal variations among pine species. But, catechol, vanillic acid and syringic acid including phenolic compounds showed no variation between pine species, even the amount of those component varied by the seasons. Salicylic acid in pine needles showed 140ppm in Pinus virginiana, 35ppm in Pinus thunbergii and 72ppm in hybrid pine, Pinus thunbergii${\times}$P. virginiana, but traces in Pinus densiflora on May and June, hatching season in larvae of pine needle gall midge. There was high level of salicylic acid in resistant species to pine needle gall midge but traces in susceptible species. As our previous researches, the necrosis rate of larvae of pine needle gall midge showed high level on the solution of phenolic compounds extracted from needles of P. virginiana and salicylic acid, and there was no gall formation in P. virginiana, so that salicylic acid in pine needles seems to have relation with those results. Therefore, it is estimated that salicylic acid is resistant substance to pine needle gall midge.

No Trace of Introduced cpDNA of Pinus thunbergii in Pinus densiflor for. erecta Postulated as an Introgressive Hybrid between Pinus densiflora and Pinus Thunbergii (소나무와 곰솔간 이입교잡종(移入交雜種)으로 추정(推定)되어온 금강송(金剛松)에 있어서 곰솔 cpDNA 의 부재(不在))

  • Portions of chloroplast genes(psbD and rbcL) were amplified from Pinus thunbergii(Japanese black pine : black pine) and Pinus densiflora(Japanese red pine : red pine) by PCR and digested by a restriction enzyme, HaeIII, respectively. Two species specific cpDNA markers were identified. With the observed cpDNA markers, paternal inheritance of cpDNA in pine hybrids was verified in an artificial hybrid family between black pine(Chollanam 37) and red pine(Chungchongbuk 3). On the basis of paternal inheritance of chloroplast genome in a hybrid, 2 portions of cpDNA amplified from 115 individuals of Pinus densiflora for. erecta were screened to detect any traces of black pine specific cpDNA markers in P. densiflora for. erecta which has been postulated as an introgressive hybrid between red pine and black pine(Hyun el al., 1967). All the analyzed individuals of Pinus densiflora for. erects revealed the identical profiles of HaeIII digested psbD and rbcL genes to red pine. This result suggests that there is no introduced chloroplast genome of black pine in Pinus densiflora for. erecta and that there is no concrete evidence of treating P. densiflora for, erecta as an introgressive hybrid between red pine(♀) and black pine(♂).

Analysis of Environment and Production of Tricholoma matsutake in Matsutake-infected Pine Trees (송이 감염묘를 이용한 송이 발생 및 발생환경 분석)

  • Tricholoma matsutake (Pine mushroom) is expensive, and its artificial cultivation has been tried in several countries. Until date, the only successful cultivation of artificial pine mushroom in pine forests uses matsutake-infected pine trees. The National Institute of Forest Science in Korea has been restudying this method since 2000. Success in fruit production and reproduction was achieved in 2010 and 2017, respectively, in the same locale. The successes proved that pine mushrooms could be cultivated artificially in the field using matsutake-infected pine trees. The fruiting of pine mushroom in October 2010 occurred 6 years, 6 months after the transplantation of matsutake-infected pine trees. Five pine mushrooms reoccurred in September 2017, 13 years, 5 months and 15 years, 5 months after the transplantation of the respective matsutake-infected pine trees. The distance between the matsutake-infected pine tree and the pine mushrooms was 12 cm at 6.6 years, 90~115 cm at 13.5 years, and 95 cm at 15.5 years. Fruiting bodies occurred 13~16 days after the underground temperature declined to below $19^{\circ}C$. In conclusion, the use of matsutake-infected pine trees remains the only way to artificially cultivate pine mushrooms. More knowledge of the environmental factors affecting matsutake fruiting would be beneficial.

Flavor Compounds in Pine Mushroom Liquor Added with Pine Tree Chips (송절편을 첨가한 송이주의 향기 성분)

  • Changes in flavor compounds in pine mushroom (Tricholoma matsutake) liquor added with pine tree chips were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. While three flavor compounds were detected in the control, fifteen were detected in the pine mushroom liquor added with pine tree chips. After eight-weeks of aging, the relative concentrations of β-fenchyl alcohol, 2-octanol, and methyl cinnamate, which are distinctive flavor characteristics of the pine mushroom, increased by 67.57%, 2.14%, and 0.94%, respectively, when pine tree chips were added (5%). Principal component analysis revealed that although flavor characteristics of the pine mushroom liquor were affected by the increased production of β-fenchyl alcohol due to the addition of pine tree chips, the aging time exerted a greater influence on flavor.
