  • It is necessary to investigate the efficacy of commercial Korean herbal medicine for cognitive disorder. The purpose of this study is to select candidates among licensed herbal medicines that are expected to be effective in the treatment of cognitive disorders and can be used in future clinical trial. From laboratory experiments, we first found individual single herbal drugs that could be effective for cognitive disorder, and then through experts recommendation, selected five priorities of single herbal drug and obtained the information of the best herb as a combination of each herbal drug. To derive the final herbal prescriptions, we searched the KFDA drug information system for licensed herbal medicines containing each drug and its combination. As a result of laboratory experiments and experts recommendation, we found that the five effective single herbal drugs for cognitive disorders. They are Ginseng Radix, Acori Graminei Rhizoma, Cyperi Rhizoma, Coptidis Rhizoma, Pinelliae Rhizoma, Hoelen cum Pini Radix, and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata(Pinelliae Rhizoma, Hoelen cum Pini Radix, and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata were tied for $5^{th}$). And licensed herbal prescriptions derived from the planned search are Palbohoichoon-tang, Taehwa-hwan, Bosim-hwan, and so on. Among these, in consideration of the feasibility of research and possibility of success in development, Yukgunja-tang, Samhwangjichul-hwan can be selected as future study subjects. Through experimental studies and expert recommendations, we have derived herbal prescriptions that can be effective in treating cognitive disorders from licensed herbal medicines.

  • In these experiments Gamiojeoksan remnant components were analyzed to recycle this medicinal herb remnant fertilizers. The basic growth of Korean mint by application of Gamiojeoksan remnants were higher than control. As the amount of fertilizers were increased, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and number of branches were increased. The growth and yield were the highest in the treatment of 30 g/pot. Weight of whole plant of Korean mint has a tendency to be heavy in application of herbs remnant than that of control.

  • Objectives : Historical study on application of Kyungohkgo, one of the most popular tonic medicine, and suggestion of modernistic method through it Methods : Investigated effect and its range of Kyungohkgo in original texts of Korean medicine, and researched studies on medical action and treatment effect of Kyungohkgo nowaday. Results : Kyungohkgo has "replenish essence and marrow(補精益髓)" as a major effect, and various original text suggested that Kyungohkgo can be used as antioxidant tonic medicine, treatment of respiratory disease like tuberculosis and medicine for bone disease controling hormone. Several research about these subjects has been progressed recently. However, the most of these researches is not an in-depth study about virtues in original texts, but deduced from effects of Kyungohkgo, and there are some studies experimented with Kyungohkgo that has not followed its own formula. Conclusions : It is required to discuss new application based on understanding effect and is range of Kyungohkgo. It could be thought that using for skin disease based on t theory of "lung presides skin and hair", chronic pulmonary disease based on treatment of cough(咳嗽), and disease of uterine and bone based on "replenish essence and marrow(補精益髓)".

  • Objectives : In each section of Huangdineijing, we reviewed how the actual clinical application of Five-Transport-points was reflected and looked at the pattern of the application at the time. Methods : The contents related to Five-Transport-points in Huangdineijing were collected from each part, and analyzed. Results : There was a great difference in the number and contents of the clinical application of each Five-Transport-point for each 12 meridian, and only 28.3% of all Five-Transport-points had been related to clinical treatment. In addition, in specific applications, spring point, stream point, and sea point were used more often than well point, and Five-Transport-points between the same meridian or different meridians were used in combination as needed. Conclusions : Five-Transport-points described in Huangdineijing are intended to be operated within the overall framework structurally or functionally with a certain principle, but as a result of comprehensive analysis of specific examples of clinical application, there was a difference in the application between Five-Transport-points. This indicates that at the time of the establishment of Huangdineijing, which was the early stage of the development of Traditional East Asian Medicine, a variety of miscellaneous acupuncture methodologies were used in addition to those based on five elements principle.

  • The economic scale of nuclear application is a good indicator to show how the radiation technology is useful and contribute to improve public welfare and living standard. Recent research in Japan shows that the economic scale of nuclear field was 4,112 B¥ for radiation application(46%) and 4,741 B¥ for nuclear energy (54%) playing a role of "two wheels of one cart" in nuclear field and the total 8,853 B¥ constitutes 1.8% of gross domestic products (GDP). The radiation application consisted of 2,295 B¥ (56%) in industry (semiconductor, sterilization, nondestructive testing, radiation processing of tires, etc.), 1,538 B¥ (37%) in medicine (therapy and diagnosis such as X-ray, nuclear medicine, computed tomography, etc.) and 279 B¥ (7%) in agriculture (mutation breeding, food irradiation, sterile insect technique, etc.). Radiation application by ${\gamma}$-ray, electron beam and ion beam is steadily increasing in Japan.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to test the effect of heating condition and Panax ginseng on body temperature, hematologicala changes, and immune response. Methods : The extract from Panax ginseng was made by the pharmacy department of Kyung Hee Oriental Medical Hospital. The animals were divided into four groups; control, room temperature Panax ginseng (G), $28^{\circ}C$ heating, and $28^{\circ}C$ heating Panax ginseng (heating G). Each group has 8 Sprague-Dawley rats. We measured body weight & temperature twice a week. After 2 weeks of experiment, serum lipid level, WBC, differential count, lymphocyte proliferation and immune cytokine concentration were measured. Results : 1. Simultaneous application of heating condition and Panax ginseng induced decreased body weight and increased body temperature. 2. Simultaneous application of heating condition and Panax ginseng induced decreased AST, ALT and BUN. 3. Simultaneous application of heating condition and Panax ginseng tended to decrease TNF-${\alpha}$ concentration, while application of room temperature and Panax ginseng tended to increase TNF-${\alpha}$ concentration. Conclusions : Simultaneous application of heating condition and Panax ginseng decreseas body weight, increases, body temperature and has a tendency to decrease TNF-${\alpha}$ concentration.

  • The recent introduction of the systems biology or systems medicine opens a new horizon in the field of traditional oriental medicine research. Until now many recent researches of traditional medicine have been conducted based upon reductionist approach, but traditional medicine should be treated by a holistic approach. In this short review, I outlined usefulness of systems approach in medicine and proposed a potential application area of traditional medicine research.
