  • The objectives of this study were to explain market structures of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand. Chile. The demand for imported logs is modeled as a function of output of wood manufacturing in Korea and log prices of competing suppliers. It is hypothesized that the quantity of log impaled in a period is determined by its own and competing prices and the output of wood corresponding manufacturing sector in the current period. Import demand functions of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand and Chile were estimated by SURE(Seemingly Unrelated Regression Equations). Elasticities of amounts of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand and Chile with respect to price of imported log from U.S.A. were -2.88, 1.36 and 3.17, respectively. Elasticities of amounts of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand and Chile with respect to price of imported log from New Zealand were 0.71, -1.65 and 1.44, respectively, Elasticities of amounts of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand and Chile with respect to price of imported log from Chile was -2.88. 1.36 and 3.17.

  • Failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) is a systematic approach for identifying potential failures before they occur, with the intent to minimize the risk associated with them. It has been widely used in the various manufacturing industries as a solution to reliability problems. As the importance of the service sector is increasing, however, it has been recently extended to some applications in services. Despite these attempts, FMEA cannot be directly applied to the reliability problems in a service industry. Due to the heterogeneity and customer participation in service process, we cannot perfectly prevent service failures. For this reason, we suggest a new risk priority number with three input parameters that consist of severity, probability of occurrence, and recoverability. In this paper, we propose an approach for assessing service risk and service reliability using the service-oriented risk priority number (S-RPN). An example regarding a hypermarket service process is used to demonstrate the proposed approach.

  • Technology is one of the major competitive advantages for small and medium enterprises (SME), especially ones operating in the manufacturing sector. Increasing technological capabilities is the basis for SME's business performance improvement. The main problem of SME's is a limitation in the areas of production facilities, technology, and human resources. Some of these constraints cause a decline in business performance and competitiveness of SME's. In this case analysis of technology components has to be carried out to determine the effect of technology on SME's business performance improvement. This study aims to measure the components of technology and to analyze the influence of each technology component on business performance of rattan processing SME's in South Kalimantan. The assessment is carried out on the technoware, humanware, inforware, and orgaware components using the technometric method (UNESCAP). Business performance is measured through a combination of financial and non-financial aspects deducted from financial and marketing figures. Analysis of the influence of technology components on business performance of SME's is done using the Structural Equation Model (SEM) with Partial Least Square software (PLS). Data is collected through interviews and questionnaires from 21 rattan processing SME's in South Kalimantan that produce rattan furnitures. The results show that the value of the contribution of technology (TCC) to the performance of rattan processing SME's in South Kalimantan is still quite low. Analysis of the results shows a direct influence of technoware and humanware on business performance, while orgaware influences business performance indirectly through humanware.

  • Opening domestic market to international trade may enhance not only actual competition but also potential competition from foreign competitors. It seems that the competition authority has focused mainly on the actual competition (measured by the current market share) and has paid less attention to the potential competition. In this regards, this paper investigated the relation between potential foreign competition and domestic market structure. Using dynamic panel regression model, we analyzed the dynamic response of import penetration to the changes of domestic market condition in Korea as a proxy for the degree of potential foreign competition. The empirical results suggests that potential foreign competition does exist in the Korean manufacturing sector and this tendency is more stronger when the market is more concentrated. Thus, in order to effectively implement competition policy, it is necessary to consider both actual and potential competition.

  • Solar energy is a quantitatively unlimited, clean and non-pollutant source. It has a great potential for industrial commercial usages. For example, solar hot water system for domestic usage has been very popular in many counties. In Korea, the industries consume 47.7% of the total national energy, and the manufacturing sector uses 91.5% out of it. The main energy resoures available in Korea are oils, coals, and gases. There have been continuous efforts among the industries to reduce such energy consumptions by using alternative energy resources, such as solar energy, yet the technology has limited its proper applications to a level of satisfaction. In some advanced countries, research and development programs in solar energy applicable to the industrial usages are very active, and some systems are in the commercial market. Therefore, this paper describes the status and the feasibility for high-efficiency evacuated solar collector which was anticipated to applied for industrial process heat as an alternative of fossil energy.

  • This paper, using the sample of male workers in manufacturing industry from the HCCP (Human Capital Corporate Panel) data, analyzes the effects of trade union on the level and dispersion of wages. One of the advantages of the HCCP data is that it enables a researcher to control the effect of individual firm's 'ability to pay' on wage. All relevant variables controlled, the union effect is estimated to be 5-8%. Yet this figure seriously underestimates the wage advantage enjoyed by union workers, because union sets the "price" for experience low and the price for tenure high and at the same time extends tenure of workers by adopting strong employment protection policy. The paper also analyzes the effects of union on the wage inequality. The results are mixed: overall wage inequality is smaller in union sector while standard deviation is larger when all the personal characteristics are controlled.

  • Currently the fashion industry is developing to create a novel culture due to the very sensitive and knowledge-oriented advancement of the IT industry. With fast turnover of information, consumers have come to have a more diverse desire for purchasing. Cubical expression techniques, which empathizes formativeness, can be a creative expression method adjusting into the trend of this era. Along with functional aspects of consumers, even in a textile manufacturing sector, new materials are required to meet sensitive and emotional aspects. Consumers' desire for new and creative designs and the development and adoption of new materials are essential to meet their emotions. The IT industry and fashion industry are forced to combine and a 3D apparel CAD system has been developed, enabling virtual clothing to be represented within a computer virtual space. All processes such as design, pattern creation, sewing and simulation are possible in 3D level. Digital clothing can shorten the production process time and is very effective in that it can reduce clothing waste generated during the sample production. This paper reviewed the works of Dutch designer, Iris van Herpen, who has developed formative designs. She tries to build, construct, and sculpt employing diversified materials other than soft textile materials, as shown in her series of fashion shows. The materials include films, 3D printed polymers, stiff and sheer organza, and artificial leather textiles. A few characteristics of her works have been selected in order to prepare patterns exhibiting the traits. The paper further focused on the physical features of the textile materials used to express similar techniques and its various forms were reviewed.

  • Purpose of this study is to classify the main industrial function by region using the factor analysis. Identified regions, Yesan-Kun area consisted of 12 Myon(towns) selected as a case study, would be conducive to establishing rural town planning reflecting their industrial characteristics. Major findings are summarized as follows. First, population of Yesan-Kun has been decreased at about 1.0% annually for the period 1970~1990, which may not meet the basic condition of sustainable regional growth. Second, economy of Yesan area, which mainly has been dependent upon the agriculture, are lagged behind because of lack of specialized manufacturing sector. Third, particularly West and East part of the region has been underdeveloped in spite of their potentiality mainly due to insufficient network of road. Based on fator analysis which classify the zones by the characteristics of industry, following developmental directions are suggested. - Yesan-Eup with a factor score of 2.85 in secondary and tertiary industry, which means functioning as a rural center should be developed to provide the residential people with basic service. - Ducksan-Myon with 2.93 factor score in tour industry is recommended to formulate leisure complex by utilizing its abundant tour resources. - Sapkyo-Eup, Goduck-Myon, Sinam-Myon, Oga-Myon Areas functioning as agricultural industry, are suggested to foster as zones specialized for the cultivation of crops and fruits. - Kwangsi-Myon and Bongsan-Myon neighboring other counties is likely to be affected by other regions' economy. These regions should be developed in association with other regions' economic circumstances. - Daeheung-Myon, Daesool-Myon and Sinyang-Myon areas, which are located southern part of Yesan County, is examined to be relatively underdeveloped area. So there are needs to make a special planning for the balanced growth of these regions.

  • In this study, in addition to non-technical innovation activities such as organizational innovation and marketing innovation, the purpose of this study was to verify through empirical analysis what mechanism appropriation affects the business performance of a company. Data were collected from the 2018 Korean Business Innovation Survey: Manufacturing Sector and used as analysis data. As a result of the analysis, it was verified through empirical analysis that non-technical innovation improves management performance, appropriability is affected by non-technical innovation, and acts as a mediating factor between management performance. Through this empirical analysis, it was derived that considering appropriation along with non-technical innovation on the recently studied non-technical innovation can be a meaningful study, and since securing such appropriation is an important factor in determining the business performance of a company. Companies need insight into the strategic use of technology protection measures to secure appropriation. As a limitation, it was limited to studies that verify that it has a mediating effect of non-technical innovation and appropriation, and it is considered that it is possible to develop a study that affects the management performance of a company through more various verification methods for future studies.

  • The purpose of this paper is to perform empirical studies on the impact of pollution intensity on international competitiveness using 1993 and 1998 data, and to estimate the change in environmental regulation level faced by the firms during 1993~1998. Collecting relevant data and providing them for further studies in the area are another purposes of the paper. The first method is the regression of various indices of international competitiveness on factor costs, such as labor, capital, R&D and pollution abatement costs. Goal of the regression analysis is to estimate the scarcity and comparative advantage effect of each production factor, especially environmental resource. Regression results show that those industries which employ more environmental resource have higher comparative advantage in both years, which implies that Korean firms are endowed with abundant environmental resource compared to other countries. The second method is to compute the relative scarcity indices(HOVL indices) of production factors, proposed by Leamer based on Vanek's generalized Hecksher-Ohlin Theorem. This method estimates the relative scarcity of production factors by computing factor costs embodied in import and export of commodities. This method shows similar results as the regression method; i.e., trade pattern of production factors implies that the manufacturing sector in Korea is endowed with abundant environmental resource compared to other countries. Considering population density, water resource endowment, intensity of economic activity per unit area and current air and water pollution levels, it is evident that Korea is never endowed with abundant environmental resource compared to other countries. Then the abundance of environmental resource revealed by the trade patterns of commodities and production factors implies that Korea's environmental regulation level is excessively generous compared to environmental capacity, and that this increased the environmental resource endowment supplied to firms and thus distorted the inter-industry comparative advantages. Both regression and HOVL methods, on the other hand, show that overall environmental regulation level faced by the firms has been strengthened during 1993~1998.
