  • Fish species composition in eelgrass bed of Bongam on Hansando island, Korea was determined using monthly samples collected by a surf net from August 2009 to July 2010. A total of 30 species, 3,237 individuals and 6,850.1g of fish were collected. The dominant species were Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Rudarius ercodes, Takifugu niphobles, Chaenogobius annularis, Pterogobius elapoides and Syngnathus schlegeli which accounted for 86.7% of total number of individuals of fish collected. Eelgrass started growing from May ($DW61.9g/m^2$) showing a peak biomass in August ($DW81.6g/m^2$), and low values in November ($DW57.23g/m^2$) to February ($DW15.41g/m^2$). The fish assemblages in the eelgrass beds showed clear seasonal changes; the number of fish species and individuals were low from September to December 2009, and high from December 2009 to July 2010. Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance was related to the water temperature and standing crops of eelgrass.

  • Olive flounder was treated with oxytetracycline (OTC) and changes in blood physiology, antioxidant enzymes and heat shock protein (HSP) were recorded to obtain preliminary data for optimal OTC treatment. Blood parameters were measured 1 and 3 h after the OTC treatments at the concentration of 0 (control), 100, 300 and 500 ppm for I h. Hematocrit decreased with time, however the difference was not significant (P>0.05). Reduced number of red blood cell was observed with increasing OTC concentration. Serum glucose level increased as the OTC concentration increased. However, glucose level was similar to control after 3 h. Blood total protein decreased immediately after the OTC treatment but increased after 1 and 3 h. However, the increment in blood total protein was low. Activities of superoxide dismutase enzymes in 300 and 500 ppm groups increased by the OTC concentration. Catalase enzyme activity was negatively affected by the OTC concentration. However, the differences were not significant (P>0.05). High expression of HSP-70 protein was recorded for groups treated with 100 and 500 ppm compared to that of the control group. However HSP-70 mRNA showed a lower increment which was not significant (P>0.05).

  • Experiments were carried out to examine the effects of the different levels of oxygen, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide on survival, specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of juvenile shrimp, Fenneropenaeus chinensis. Survival of the shrimp exposed to the hypoxia with $\leq$2.5 mg/L dissolved oxygen for 24 days were significantly affected. SGR and FCR of the shrimp exposed to$\leq$3.0 mg/L dissolved oxygen were significantly reduced than those of shrimp reared at 6.8 mg/L dissolved oxygen concentration. Survival of the shrimp exposed to $\geq$2.0 mg/L of ammonia levels for 24 days was significantly affected. Moreover, compared to the control group significant decrease of SGR and FCR of the shrimp has been observed with $\geq$1.0 mg/L and $\geq$0.5 mg/L of ammonia concentrations. In case of hydrogen sulfide, $\geq$0.5 mg/L was the critical level showed its significant negative effect on survival rate of shrimp exposed for 24 days. While, the group exposed with $\geq$0.07 mg/L and $\geq$0.05 mg/L hydrogen sulfide levels had a lower SGR and FCR values than did the control group in the same stipulated time of exposure.

  • Two experiments were conducted to study the effect of temperature on growth and survival of yearling sea bass, Lateolabrax japonicus reared from 3$^{\circ}C$ to 33$^{\circ}C$. In the I st experiment, we used yearlings fish averaging 19.2$\pm$0.2 cm/fish (Mean$\pm$S.E.M.) of total length (TL) and 67.0$\pm$1.8 g/fish (Mean$\pm$S.E.M.) of body weight (BW), and we cultured the fish at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 17$^{\circ}C$ for 90 days. In the 2nd experiment, the experimental fish averaging 24.9$\pm$0.1 cm/fish (Mean$\pm$S.E.M) of TL and I 46.4$\pm$3.0 g/fish (Mean$\pm$S.E.M) of BW were reared at 21,24,27,30 and 33$^{\circ}C$ for 90 days. During these experiments, we measured food intake, feed efficiency, survival and growth (TL and BW) in the both experiments. Although food intake of the yearling increased with the temperature, the feed efficiency was only enhanced within the temperature range, from 21 to 27$^{\circ}C$. Growth of yearling was normal within the temperature range from 17 to 3$0^{\circ}C$, but it was stoped or reduced in other temperatures. Survival rate was significantly reduced in 3$^{\circ}C$ from the 1st experiment and in 30 and 33$^{\circ}C$ from the 2nd experiment, but there was no significant difference among other groups.

  • Yolk resorotion and commencement of external feeding in larvae of red spotted grouper, Epinepheus akaara were studied to understand the high mortality of larvae. Consumption of yolk was higher than that of oil globule for the first 24hs after hatching. The resorption rates of yolk and oil globule increased with the increase of temperature. The time yolk was comsumed up to 99% was 84hs after hatching in 23~$25^{\circ}C$,72hs at ~$27^{\circ}C$, and 60hs in 29~~$31^{\circ}C$, while the time for oil globule was 96hs in 23~$25^{\circ}C$, 84hs at $27^{\circ}C$, and 60hs in 29~$31^{\circ}C$. The relationship between mouth openning time (Y) and water temperature (X) was repersented as a linear regression, Y=-2.53X+118.4, (r2=0.89). In 72~96hs after hatching, upper jaw sizes of the larvae reached around 0.114 mm. By the time the larvae comsumed most of the yolk and oil globule, and started external feeding. The relationship between upper jaw length (Y) and total length (X) was represented as a linear regression, Y=0.139X-0.165, (r2=0.88). Rotifer was not found in the guts of larvae before 72hs after hatching at $28^{\circ}C$, when larvae resorbed their yolk and oil globule over 99%. But, at 96hs after hatching, about 33% of the larvae had the rotifer in their guts. Delayed feeding experiments revealed that the earlier food supply within 84hs after hatching showed the better survival rates for the larvae. The larvae fed at 96hs after hatching died all within 120hs.

  • This study was performed to investigate the formation and mass production of resting eggs by freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus as influenced by different aeration supplements and exchange intervals of culture water in 15-L culture vessels and 500 L culture tanks. The maximum densities and mixis rates of the rotifers were not different between experimental group exposed to air or oxygen supplements. However, the fertilization rate and formation of resting eggs of the rotifers in the air-supplemented group were significantly higher than those in the oxygen supplemented group. In the experiment concerning exchange interval of culture water, the maximum density of the rotifers and formation of resting eggs in the batch culture were significantly higher than those in the semi-continuous culture with exchange of water every day. The formation of resting eggs per Chlorella dry weight was highest in the semi-continuous culture with exchange of water every day. The resting eggs of rotifers were produced at a density of $51.8{\sim}57.9{\times}10^6$ eggs in 500-L culture tanks. In this study, the batch culture with air is an effective method for mass production of resting eggs by the freshwater rotifer, B. calyciflorus, and the efficiency of mass production of resting eggs by this rotifer was similar to that of the seawater rotifers, B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis.

  • Optima for temperature, salinity and light intensity for Nitzschia closterium, Chlorella salina, I내초교냔 galbana and Tetraselmis subcordiformis, which are widely used in bivalve hatcheries of Shandong Province in China, were estimated. The temperature optimum was 23 $^{\circ}C$ for N. closterium and I. galbana and 25 and 27$^{\circ}C$ for C. salina and T. subcordiformis, respectively. That for salinity was 23${\textperthousand}$ for N. closterium and T, subcordiformis, but was 33${\textperthousand}$ for C. salina and I. galbana. In general, all the four microalgae grew faster under 6,000 lux than under 4,000 lux. Growth of N. closterium was faster at $25^{\circ}C$ and dropped abruptly >$25^{\circ}C$, and that of C. salina and T. subcordiformis progressively increased upto $25^{\circ}C$ but dropped beyond 27$^{\circ}C$. T. subcordiformis was the most eurythermal among the 4 species. For mass culture of microalgae in Korea, N. closterium and C. salina are suitable during spring and autumn but C. salina and I. galbana during summer. T. subcordiformis is suitable for culture throughout the year.
