Cham-dang-gui (Angelica gigas nakai) has been used in traditional Korean medicine to treat hemotological disorders. The purpose of this study is to investigate the hematological effects of water extracts of Cham-dang-gui in rats with anemia induced by iron-free diets. Rats were divided into two groups, a regular diet group (RD) and an iron-free diet group (FeD). The iron-free diet group was then subdivided into the following three treatment groups: saline (1.0 ml/kgBW/day, FeDS), Cham-dang-gui (1.0 g/kgBW/day, FeDA), and iron (iron succinylate 14 mg/kgBW/day, FeDFe) groups. Rats were fed an iron-free diet for 6 weeks to induce iron-deficient anemia, and subsequently underwent the treatments, during which they were fed an iron-free diet for 3 weeks followed by a regular diet for 3 weeks. Body weights of the iron-diet groups (FeDS, FeDA, FeDFe) were lower than that of RD group. The blood levels of Hgb, Hct, MCV, MCH and TIBC were significantly higher in RD and FeDFe groups than those of other groups. The water extract of Cham-dang-gui with iron-free diet has no hematological effects. A regular diet followed by iron-free diets significantly increased blood levels of Hgb, Hct, and MCH.
Chinese medical materials of Astragalas manbranaceus Bunge, Angelica gigas Nakai, Cnidium officinale, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, Lycium Chinese Mill were mixed, mixing ratio was 28:20: 18:18:16(w/w). Yield and concentration of extract obtained through extraction- concentration process of the mixed Chinese medical materials were 37.28%(w/w) and 50Brix, respectively. Animal feed(AF) used for animal test was manufactured from both mixing of general AF and this extract(0∼ 5%, w/w) and freeze dried. After the male rats were fed experimental diets in order to test during 4 weeks, the results of plasma TG, total cholesterol, phospholipid content changes and plasma, pancreas and femur insulin concentration changes were followed. The more the amount of treatment of Chinese medical material extract are, the higher the effect of concentration decline are in plasma lipid concentration. And at 3% treatment plasma TG, total cholesterol and phospholipid contents are decreased respectively 8.62%, 2.81% and 2.11%. Plasma glucose concentration has also similar effect that those things are decreased at 3% treatment. Insulin concentration of plasma, pancreas and femur are difficult to prove the effects due to respective increase and decrease. We guess that these results comes from not experimenting intentioned rat of diabetes mellitus but normal rat.
This study was conducted to elucidate extraction efficiency by microwave in comparison with Soxhlet for extraction of pesticide residues in dried medical herbs; red-ginseng, white-ginseng, Bupleuri Radix, Angelica gigas Nakai, Rehmannia glutinosa. The acetone extraction by microwave of tolclofos-methyl and quintozene in medical herbs was efficient. The extraction efficiency by microwave with power 45 to 150 watts, extraction time 1 to 5 minutes and solvent volume 30 ml was compared with that of Soxhlet with extraction time 7 hours and solvent volume 150 ml. The extraction efficiency by microwave with extraction time 3 to 5 minutes was similar with extraction time of 7 hours by Soxhlet. When medical herbs spiked with tolclofos-methyl and quintozene was analyzed to how the extraction efficiency of microwave by kind of medical herbs, the extraction efficiency by microwave with extraction time of 3 to 5 minutes was the same as Soxhlet extraction. The optimal condition for extraction of tolclofos-methyl and quintozene in medical herbs by microwave was 45 to 90 watts of power supply, 3 to 5 minutes of extraction time and acetone 30 ml of solvent volume.
This experiment was conducted to increase the available constituents contents of Angelica gigas Nakai and to decide the application amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. The effects of the amounts of their application and absorption on the contents of decursin and sugar in Angelicae gigantis Redix were studied. The decursin contents of root was decreased with increasing the application amount of nitrogen more than 10kg/10a, and increased along with the increasing application level until 20kg/10a and 15kg/10a of phosphorus and potassium, respectively. The decursin yield per 10a was increased with increasing application level until 10kg/10a, 10kg/10a and 10kg/10a of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, respectively. The decursin yield per l0a was decreased with increasing application level more than 20kg/10a of nitrogen. The total sugar yield per 10a was increased with increasing the application level until 15kg/10a, 10kg/10a of nitrogen and potassium respectively. But the effect of phosphorus application on the total sugar yield was not observed. The significant negative correlation was obtained between the decursin contents and the nitrogen contents of root$(r=-0.437^{\ast})$, and the significant positive correlation between the decursin contents and the contents of phosphorus$(r=0.587^{{\ast}{\ast}})$ or potassium$(r=0.467^{\ast})$ in root. But the significant correlations between the decursin contents and the their contents of shoots were not observed. It is recommended for decursin production to apply 10kg/10a, 15kg/10a and 10kg/10a of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, respectively.

The purpose of this study is verification of the anti-oxidant effect and anti-inflammatory effect of Eggplant-cheongyeolsodokum composed of 8 herbs (Solanum melongena L., Lonicera japonica Thunb., Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort., Angelica gigas Nakai., Coptis deltoidea C. Y. Cheng et Hsiao., Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis., Forsythia suspensa Vahl) to confirm the possibilities as useful cosmetic material. We used the modified prescription of 'cheongyeolsodokum' contained in Korean traditional medical book 'Donguibogam' as composition of Eggplant-cheongyeolsodokum and their proportions. Eggplant-cheongyeolsodokum were extracted with hot water, 70% ethanol and then powdered. To confirm anti-oxidant effect, we investigated radical scavenging ability (DPPH, $ABTS^+$, superoxide), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, total polyphenolic contents. Also to confirm anti-inflammatory effect, we investigated inhibition effect of nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages, and Inhibition effect of the expression of inflammatory-related proteins (iNOS, COX-2) by western blot analysis. As a result, Eggplant-cheongyeolsodokum showed good anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation effects, we suggest that it can be used as an active ingredient for cosmetics.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of decursin (D) and decursinol angelate (DA) against bisphenol A (BPA) toxicity in a rat two-generation study. Adult rats were divided into the following three groups: (1) control, (2) BPA, and (3) BPA+D/DA. The D and DA treatment of F0 parents increased the terminal body weight and relative adult organ weights (testes, kidneys, spleen, and liver) when compared with the BPA group. A significant decrease in sperm count was found in the BPA+D/DA (7.69%) and BPA (64.70%, p<0.01) groups, when compared with the sperm count in the control group. No offspring were obtained in the F1 generation of the BPA (50 mg/kg/day) group, but the addition of D/DA in the BPA+D/DA group significantly restored fertility (55.78%) and gestation indices (98.87%) in the F1 generation. No significant differences were found in the fertility index between the control (75.02%) and the BPA+D/DA (78.11%) groups in the two-generation study, when compared with the one-generation study. The viability ratio during lactation in the D/DA group was also similar to that of the control group. These data indicate that D/DA (50 mg/kg/day) administered over two generations causes significant positive changes in reproductive or developmental parameters.

This study confirmed the effects of seed shape, temperature, and light treatment on the germination of eight species of medicinal crops to produce high-value crops in vertical farms. Eight species of medicinal seeds were selected, and the seed shape, seed length, seed width, seed length/width ratio, and one hundred seed weight were measured. The seed moisture content was confirmed. Eight species of medicinal seeds were sown, and the germination rate, germination energy, mean daily germination, and mean germination time were investigated according to temperature (15, 20, 25, 25/15℃) and light treatment. Each of the eight medicinal seeds showed different seed shapes. The moisture content of the seeds showed a moisture content rate of over 20% in the five medicinal seeds. Medicinal seeds that showed a germination rate of over 50% were Angelica gigas Nakai, Codonopsis lanceolata (Siebold & Zucc.) Benth. & Hook.f. ex Trautv., and Achyranthes bidentata Blume var. japonica Miq. seeds. A. gigas seed showed a germination rate of 67.34 ± 4.38% under 25/15℃ light conditions, and C. lanceolata seed showed a germination rate of over 50% under both temperature and light treatment conditions, especially the highest germination rate of 82.67 ± 1.46% under 15℃ dark conditions. Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. seed showed a germination rate of 52.34 ± 1.77% under dark conditions at 20℃, and the highest germination rate was 51.67 ± 3.79% under dark conditions at 15℃. The maximum germination energy was 74.00 ± 4.94% in C. lanceolata seed. The maximum mean daily germination was 14.94 ± 0.15 days in P. japonicum seed. Astragalus penduliflorus Lam. var. dahuricus (DC.) X.Y.Zhu seed showed the highest mean germination time of 34.19 ± 4.71. Through this study, it was determined that A. gigas, C. lanceolata, and A. penduliflours seeds would be suitable for production in vertical farms based on the characteristics of each medicinal seed through analysis of seed germination characteristics.
