  • Korean medical databases are various from managing institutions. Korean major medical databases are KoreaMed, KoMCI, Synapse of Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) made by medical researchers and doctors, and KMbase of Medical Research Information Center (MedRIC), RISS of Korea Education & Research Information Service (KERIS), NDSL of Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), KCI of National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) made by government. Private companies made KISS (Koreanstudies Information Service System) and DBpia are providing medical information on charge. Internet portal site, Google and Naver, also provide enormous materials.

  • Nationwide incidence survey was conducted to estimate the annual incidence rates of colorectal cancer among Koreans between Jan 1, 1988 and Dec 31, 1989. The population of the incidence survey was the beneficiaries of Korea Medical Insurance Corporation (KMIC), which were about 4,500,000 persons. The medical records of patients with diagnosis of either ICD-9 153(colon cancer), 154(rectal caner), 197(secondary malignant neoplasm of digestive and respiratory system), or 211(benign neoplasm of digestive system) were abstracted for the period with the standard format. The diagnosis was confirmed by one oncologist through the review of these abstracts. The numerator of the rate was finally defined as the incident colorectal cancer cases diagnosed between July 1, 1988 and June 30, 1989. The crude annual incidence of colorectal cancer for men was 13.1 per 100,000 and 10.6 for women, which was still low when compared with those of Japan and China during the same period. Age-adjusted sex ratio was 1.2 for right-sided colon cancer and 1.9 for left-sided colon cancer. The excess of right colon cancer among postmenopausal women was remarkable, so further analytical approach would be needed to investigate which factors are related with this phenomenon.

  • Cyclooxygenase (Cox-2) is involved in tumorigenesis. hence. considered to be a molecular target for chemoprevention and chemomodulation. Selective Cox-2 inhibitors including Celecoxib and Nimesulide have been studied for their anticancer activity when given alone and in combination with radiation or cytotoxic agents. In this study, we synthesized more than 140 analogues of Celecoxib and Nimesulide. and evaluated their inhibitory effects on Cox-l and Cox-2 activity as well as cytotoxicity in order to find promising anticancer agents having selective Cox-2 inhibitory effect. • The purpose of this study is to encourage the circulation of good quality of oriental medicine and to improve national welfare. Investigation for the induction of quality inscription system was conducted by mail and interview. The data were analyzed by SAS. The major results were as follows: The portion of subjects agree to necessity of quality inscription was 78.5%. In the question of side effect against quality inscription, the rate of negative was 67.7%. The responses answered that the necessity of quality inscription was not economical profit but authority of knowledge and improvement on health(37.8%), established market for herbal medicine(34.7%) and effect of clinical care(23.9%), respectively These results might be useful information for establishing of quality inscription system for herbal medicine.

  • Corbicula fluminea Muller 1884 is the commonest freshwater bivalve in Asian countri including Korea. This clam is easily found in the freshwater systems, and edible as a food source in Korea. This study was aimed to confirm natural infection of C. fluminea collected from various localities with Echinostoma cinetorchis, an important hum intestinal fluke in Korea. (omitted)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether medication and deep brain stimulation (DBS) have differential effects on the speed and amplitude of bradykinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Five PD patients with implanted DBS electrodes (age: $60.6{\pm}7.4yrs$, H&Y stage: $3.1{\pm}0.2$) participated in this study. FT (finger tapping) movement was measured using a gyrosensor system in four treatment conditions: Med (Medication)-off/DBS-off, Med-off/DBS-on, Med-on/DBS-off and Med-on/DBS-on. Quantitative measures representing average speed and amplitude of FT movement included root-mean-squared (RMS) angular velocity and RMS angle. One-way repeated measures ANOVA showed that RMS angular velocity of Med-on/DBS-on was significantly greater than those of Med-off/DBS-off and Med-off/DBS-on (p < 0.01) whereas RMS angle was not different among conditions (p = 0.06). Two way repeated measures ANOVA showed that only medication improved RMS angular velocity (p < 0.01), whereas both medication and DBS had no significant effect on RMS angle (p > 0.02). Effect size of RMS angular velocity was greater than that of RMS angle in both medication and DBS. This suggests that medication and DBS have differential effects on FT bradykinesia and velocity and amplitude impairments may be associated with different functional aspects in PD.

  • No report has been addressed to the CYP isoforms catalyzing chlorpropamide, a structural analogue of tolbutamide. To evaluate enzyme(s) mediating formation of 2-hydroxycWorpropamide, a major metabolite and identified by LC/Mass and NMR, incubation studies using human liver microsomes and cDNA expressed CYP were performed on the presence or absence of selective inhibitors of each CYP isoform.
