Study on Expansion of Cooperation Opportunities according to FTA between Korea and Israel (한-이스라엘 간 FTA 체결에 따른 협력기회 확대 연구)

  • This research examined Israel's economic trends, trades, and cooperation with Korea prior to the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Korea and Israel. Also, this research assessed opportunities and ways to expand the above more easily. Israel has a high level of technology in basic materials and information technology (IT). Meanwhile, Korea mainly exports automobiles and wireless communication equipment to Israel and imports semiconductor-related equipment and aviation components from Israel. Moreover, since the two countries signed a trade agreement in August 2019, they expect to expand trade with each other. As such, in order to promote multilateral trade and cooperation between the two countries, it is necessary to expand joint development opportunities through mutual collaboration on basic industries and smart mobility that Korea is in need. Further, Korean construction and materials companies related to the SOC industry in Israel should accelerate their local advances. In addition, more of the governmental support should be provided to foster regional experts and to offer various information to the companies entering the country.

Comparative Analysis of Middle School Science Curriculum between Korea and Israel (우리나라와 이스라엘의 중학교 과학과 교육과정 비교연구)

  • The research aimed to compare science curriculum between Korea and Israel and find out characteristics of science curriculum in Israel at middle school level. The middle school 'science' of the 7th revised national curriculum in Korea and middle school 'science and technology' in Israel were compared. Among characteristics of the Israel curriculum of 'science and technology,' distinct ones are as follows: First, 'science and technology' was most highly emphasized with the largest number of time allotment among all subjects at middle school level in Israel. Second, the contents of 'science and technology' were classified into seven areas of 'energy and interaction', 'materials', 'organism', 'earth and the universe', 'technological systems and products' . 'information and communication',and 'ecosystems' rather than four areas of energy, materials, life and earth in Korea. Third, 'organism' was allocated with the highest number of hours among seven areas. Fourth, objectives of each content of 'science and technology' were divided into three categories: scientific aspect, technological aspect, and social value and objectives of each category were related to one another. This characteristic seems to stress STS, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary approaches in 'science and technology' in Israel. Such characteristics of the 'science and technology' education in Israel are likely to make significant contributions to establish human resources of highly developing science and technology including IT, BT, NT, ST in the future society. Reflecting upon the characteristics of 'science and technology' education in Israel, Korea might seek for ways to improve its national power based on science and technology through strengthening science and emphasizing science and technology contents among school curriculum.

A View on Mathematics Education of Israel and Singapore (이스라엘과 싱가포르 수학교육에 대한 소고)

  • The purpose of the present study is to find out some implications from comparing mathematical education of Israel and Singapore. This study examined what values are represented in schooling of both Israel and Singapore and what factors are influencing mathematics teacher education of both countries. Education in Israel and Singapore plays a significant role for the survival of the nation and economic success, and the education system is focused on elitism, especially in terms that they have selective system of students and restrictive exams from the elementary school level. The educational system in both countries provides students with little opportunities for social mobility, because students from the low SES families are not equally exposed to educational facilities and experiences. The results of this study imply that the critical factor affecting students achievement in Israel and Singapore seems to be the quality of teacher education system and the quality of teachers. In particular, it seems that we need to be very careful of uncritically adopting mathematical ideas from both Israel and Singapore, because they both have very different contexts of educational goals, educational policies, racial and cultural factors from Korea.

  • While many factors could be mentioned to the rapid development of Israel for the last 50 years, it could not be overemphasized the critical role of large scale influx of Jewish immigrants not only in the process of achieving national independence but to the development of modernization. It is well known that mass influx of people in a relatively short period of time may cause serious social problems in various areas such as housing shortage, increasing crime rate, etc. Nontheless, Israel is avidly recognized as a country that successfully overcome such problems by means of creating systematic social integration systems and practicing various adaptation assistance programs for new immigrants. This study was concerned with such a successful social adaptation-assistance programs of Israel for large scale immigrants those who came from all over the world with different socio-economic background. In order to answer the research questions, following two areas of topics were researcher`s main concern. First, organizational structure and functions of the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption of Israel and Jewish Agency that are primarily responsible for the economic, occupational, social, and cultural integration of immigrants during their first three years (five years for housing-aid) in Israel. Second practical adaptation assistance programs such as direct absorption basket, Ulpan, Aliyah 2000, special projects of Keren Hayesod and two of Aliyah Absorption Centers are examined. And lastly some of implications and suggestions are provided in the conclusion section in relation with social adaptation-assistance and integration of reunified Korea, especially from the point of North Koreans.

From integration to independence, the evolution of computer science subject in Israel (통합에서 독립으로, 이스라엘 컴퓨터과학 교과의 진화)

  • To understand an educational curriculum at the national level is to check the status of the respective subjects involved. This study aimed at analyzing computer science education and educational curricula in Israel, a leader in fostering creative human resources, so as to suggest directions for computer science education in Korea. Israel's computer science education in middle schools is provided through integration with natural science and technology subjects, but in high school it is offered as an independent subject. In 2011, as the computer science educational curriculum for middle schools was developed, computer science evolved from an integrated to an independent subject. Accordingly, this study proposes the necessity to discuss the status of this subject from the viewpoint of integration and independence for computer science education in Korea.

  • Israel craves peace and freedom. Israel has won many wars and conflicts militarily. They have developed strategic thinking based on the data, unique culture, and peacetime preparation system accumulated so far, and the strategic culture based on it contributes to fostering elite strong forces by presenting directions to security strategies.The strategic culture formed by Israeli beliefs, behavioral patterns, and identity influenced strategic thinking and the usefulness of security strategies. The purpose of this study is to redefine the concept of strategic culture by referring to the methodological discussion of strategic culture theory and to examine how useful strategic culture has provided strategic thinking and security strategies. In addition, based on the impact of Israel's strategic culture on security strategy, I would like to present implications for Korea's security strategy.

  • The Arrow system, an Israeli missile defense system, was developed through a strategic partnership between the United States and Israel. Israel's cooperation with the Strategic Defense Initiative(SDI) research of the Reagan administration in the United States began in 1986 with the development of a tactical ballistic missile defense system and two increasingly improvements to Arrow 3. It could be a moral lessen to developing Korean Ballistic Missile Defense System because Israel's Geopolitical environment is similar to Korean peninsula.

What Makes Korea-Israel Science Teachers Inservice Program for Fostering Learners' Creativity Effective? (창의성 계발 과학교육을 위한 한국 - 이스라엘 과학교사 연수프로그램의 효율성)

  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Korea-Israel science teachers inservice program. Thirty science teachers who participated in the inservice program responded to pre- and post tests of the survey instrument on (a) their perceptions to creativity fostering science education and understandings of current education status and reform movement, (b) degrees of changes about understanding of creativity and implementing teaching methods for fostering creativity before and after the program, and (c) their evaluative opinions on the program. Suggestions for improving the program were proposed as follows: First, a pre-service workshop for the program should be provided in order to clearly realize the essential purpose of the program through increase of participating teachers' understanding of facing conditions of education, school policy, reform movement toward science education fostering creativity. Second, for the content of the program, creativity is more emphasized. Appropriate content and sufficient time arrangement for creativity will develop teachers' conceptual understanding of creativity in depth. Third, classroom observation of exemplary science teaching for fostering creativity should be sufficiently arranged. Fourth, amount of content and time allotment to Israel culture, religion, and education system should be reduced.
