  • Mechanical load measurements on blade and tower of Vestas 100 kW wind turbine has been reformed in Wollyong test site, Jeju island. The experimental procedure for the measurement of wind turbine loads, such as edgewise(lead-lag) bending moment, flapwise bending moment, and tower base bending moment, has been established. The test facilities consisting of strain-gauges, telemetry and T-Mon system are installed in the wind turbine. Strain gauges are on-site calibrated against load cell prior to monitoring the wind turbine loads. Using the test setup, the loads on the components are being measured and analysed for various external conditions of the wind turbine. A set of results for near rated wind speed has been presented in this paper.

  • To develop a wind farm in a mountainous terrain like Korea, it is generally more advantageous to install wind turbines along a mountain ridge where has relatively better wind resource because that is open in all directions and free from shielding by the surrounding topography. In this study, the SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) v4.1 3 arc-second resolution digital elevation database and the geomorphometric characterization software LandSerf v2.3 are used to extract ridge lines for assessing a wind farm siting in mountainous terrain. The effectiveness of wind farm siting along a ridge line is confirmed that the most of wind turbines in the Gangwon, Taegisan, and Maebongsan wind farms in Korea's mountainous terrain are placed along the primary and secondary ridge lines where wind resource is relatively outstanding.

  • The South Korean government invested about 560 billion won in research and development in the wind power sector over 30 years from 1989 to 2019. In addition, the government has been setting up conditions for the country's wind industry to grow through various policies, including the RPS (Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard). As a result, the size of Korea's wind industry has grown to 1.1 trillion won in annual sales and there are 2,000 people working in the wind energy sector. While the domestic market is weak due to the small size of Korea and there are problems with the NIMBY, the government has continued to support technology developments and support market policies. Despite insufficient performance in overseas markets, the effect of the government is still significant on the growth of the wind industry. In particular, the government's R&D investment program, which focuses on enhancing companies' competitiveness, has spurred job creation in the wind industry and a stable research environment for researchers. In this study, we compared the differences between methods of investigating employment statistics in Korea and those of other countries. We also proposed effective investment measures for the government by analyzing the investment effects according to value chain and types of organization.

  • Comparative evaluation of offshore wind retreival software, which use the satellite images taken by Synthetic Aperture Radar sensor; SARTools of CLS-SOPRONO, France and SpaceEye of London Research and Development Corporation, Canada is carried out. For a reference satellite image, ENVISAT ASAR imagery of Jeollanam-do Wan-do area when the winter-time northwestern wind prevails is processed by CMOD_IFR2, CMOD4, CMOD5 algorithms. Wind speed difference and its relative ratio are calculated to evaluate uncertainty of software selection.

  • In an efforts to encourage renewable energy deployment, the government has initiated so called 1 million green homes program but the accumulated installation capacity of small wind turbine has been about 70kW. It can be explained in several ways such that current subsidy program does not meet public expectations, economic feasibility of wind energy is in doubt or acoustic emission is significant etc. The author investigated annual energy production of Skystream 3.7 wind turbine using measured power curve and wind resource data. The measured power curve of the small wind turbine was obtained through power performance tests at Wol-Ryoung test site. AEP(Annual Energy Production) and CF(Capacity Factor) were evaluated at selected locations with the measured power curve.

  • Antarctic King Sejong Station was established in King George Island, the South Pole in 1988, and has been executing the monitoring studies on the change of antarctic natural environment. As an available power, the wind energy generator has been used in the form of hybrid with mainly diesel generator. Because the wind generation power sharply changes by wind energy, it must be careful during the system operation. When the power system becomes stable, the output performance of wind energy generator becomes stable. But, in case of unstable system, the errors frequently occur on the wind energy generator and it badly impacts the power system by output of wind energy generator. The purpose of this paper is to analyze suitability while operating the system of 10kW wind energy generator at Antarctic King Sejong Station, an isolated area, and to analyze the problem and improvements by power quality.

  • As the needs for alternative energy and renewable energy increase, there has been a lot of investment in developing wind energy, which does not cause air pollution nor the greenhouse gas effect. Wind energy is an environment friendly energy that is unlimited in its resources and is possible to be produced wherever the wind blows. However, since wind energy heavily relies on wind that has unreliable characteristics, it may be difficult to have efficient energy transmissions. For this reason, an important factor in wind energy forecasting is the estimation of available wind power. In this study, Gunsan wind farm data was used to compare ARMA model to neural network model to analyze for more accurate prediction of wind power generation. As a result, the neural network model was better than the ARMA model in the accuracy of the wind power predictions.

  • The investigation on wind farm design using CFD technique was carried out to reduce turbulence intensity in a wind farm. A potential wind farm in Gasiri of Jeju Island was selected for the design and the commercial S/W of Meteodyn WT was used for applying CFD technique. The initial layout of wind turbines was derived using WindPRO which is mainly used for wind farm design in Korea. Then, the distribution of turbulence intensity on complex terrain was calculated and visible by Meteodyn WT. Based on the distribution, wind turbines were positioned properly. As a result, wind turbines could be deployed at positions with minimum turbulence intensity as well as maximum Annual Energy Production, AEP, using Meteodyn WT. It is necessary to take into account turbulence intensity in wind farm design to avoid wind turbine failure.

  • This study evaluates wind farm efficiency at Haengwon in Jeju Island. The actual energy production at Haengwon wind farm is compared with the estimated energy production based on Korean wind map which is developed at the National Institute of Meteorological Research/KMA. The validation of wind map at Gujwa located near the Haengwon wind farm shows that the wind speed is overestimated. The diurnal variation of wind speed shows a maximum value in the afternoon due to the effect of sea-land breeze. The ratio of the actual energy production at Haengwon wind farm and the estimated energy production based on the Korean wind map is 24.8%, while the distribution of energy frequency is similar each other. The difference of energy production is caused by mechanical error of the turbine and the overestimation of the simulated wind map. This study will contribute to the repowering of turbines for improving the efficiency of wind farm in the future.

  • A simple but practical Ensemble Prediction System(EPS) for wind power forecasting was developed and evaluated using the measurement of the offshore meteorological tower, HeMOSU-1(Herald of Meteorological and Oceanographic Special Unite-1) installed at the Southwest Offshore in South Korea. The EPS developed by the Korea Institute of Energy Research is based on a simple ensemble mean of two Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP) models, WRF-NMM and WRF-ARW. In addition, the Kalman Filter is applied for real-time quality improvement of wind ensembles. All forecasts with EPS were analyzed in comparison with the HeMOSU-1 measurements at 97 m above sea level during Typhoon Bolaven episode in August 2012. The results indicate that EPS was in the best agreement with the in-situ measurement regarding (peak) wind speed and cut-out speed incidence. The RMSE of wind speed was 1.44 m/s while the incidence time lag of cut-out wind speed was 0 hour, which means that the EPS properly predicted a development and its movement. The duration of cut-out wind speed period by the EPS was also acceptable. This study is anticipated to provide a useful quantitative guide and information for a large-scale offshore wind farm operation in the decision making of wind turbine control especially during a typhoon episode.
