  • This paper compares the fatigue behaviors of concretes subjected to flexural and split-tensional loadings, and proposes the fatigue reliability models based on experimental results and reliability analysis. The fatigue tests were performed for the specimens of $150 mm{\times}75 mm$ split tensional cylinders and $150 mm{\times}150 mm{\times}550 mm$ flexural beams under constant loadings at three levels (70, 80 and $90\%$) with 0.1 stress ratio, 20 Hz loading speed and sine wave. The reliability analysis on fatigue data was based on Weibull distribution of two-parameters. From fatigue test results, two criteria were proposed to reject the experimental fatigue data because of statistical variation of concrete fatigue data. Two parameters ($\alpha$and u) of Weibull distribution were obtained using graphical method, moment method and maximum likelihood method. The probability density function(P.D.F) and cumulative distribution function(C.D.F) of the Weibull distribution for fatigue life of pavement concrete were derived for various stress levels using parameters, $\alpha$ and u. The goodness-of-fit test by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was acceptable at $5\%$ level of significance. Based on reliability analysis, a fatigue model for pavement concrete was proposed and compared from existing models.

  • Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is the most economically important timber producing species in the southern United States. Much attention has been given to predicting diameter distributions for the solution of multiple-product yield estimates. The three-parameter Weibull diameter distribution yield prediction systems were developed for loblolly pine plantations. A parameter recovery procedure for the Weibull distribution function based on four percentile equations was applied to develop diameter distribution yield prediction models. Four percentiles (0th, 25th, 50th, 95th) of the cumulative diameter distribution were predicted as a function of quadratic mean diameter. Individual tree height prediction equations were developed for the calculation of yields by diameter class. By using individual tree content prediction equations, expected yield by diameter class can be computed. To reduce rounding-off errors, the Weibull cumulative upper bound limit difference procedure applied in this study shows slightly better results compared with upper and lower bound procedure applied in the past studies. To evaluate this system, the predicted diameter distributions were tested against the observed diameter distributions using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov two sample test at the ${\alpha}$=0.05 level to check if any significant differences existed. Statistically, no significant differences were detected based on the data from 516 evaluation data sets. This diameter distribution yield prediction system will be useful in loblolly pine stand structure modeling, in updating forest inventories, and in evaluating investment opportunities.

  • This paper is described as an experimental analysis for the probabilistic directional design hour volume estimation. The main objective of this paper is to derive acceptable design rankings, PK factors, and PD factors. In order to determine an appropriate distribution for acceptable design rankings, 12 probability distribution functions were employed. The parameters were estimated based on the method of maximum likelihood. The goodness of fit test was performed with a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The Beta General distribution among the probability distributions was selected as an appropriate model for 2 lane roadways. On the other hand, the Weibull distribution is superior for 4 lanes. The method of the inverse cumulative distribution function came up with an acceptable design ranking of design for LOS D. An acceptable design ranking of 2 lanes is 190, while an acceptable design ranking for 4 lanes is 164. The PK factor and PD factor of 2 lanes was elicited for 0.119 (0.100-0.139) and 0.568 (0.545-0.590), respectively. On the other hand, the PK factor and PD factor for 4 lanes was elicited as 0.106 (0.097-0.114) and 0.571 (0.544-0.598), respectively.

  • In this research, various characteristics of South Korea's design flood have been examined by deriving appropriate design flood, using data obtained from careful observation of actual floods occurring in selected main watersheds of the nation. 19 watersheds were selected for research in Korea. The various characteristics of annual rainfall were analyzed by using a moving average method. The frequency analysis was decided to be performed on the annual maximum flood of succeeding one year as a reference year. For the 19 watersheds, tests of basic statistics, independent, homogeneity, and outlier were calculated per period of annual maximum flood series. By performing a test using the LH-moment ratio diagram and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test, among applied distributions of Gumbel (GUM), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Logistic (GLO) and Generalized Pareto (GPA) distribution was found to be adequate compared with other probability distributions. Parameters of GEV distribution were estimated by L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moment method based on the change in the order of probability weighted moments. Design floods per watershed and the periods of annual maximum flood series were derived by GEV distribution. According to the result of the analysis performed by using variation rate used in this research, it has been concluded that the time for changing the design conditions to ensure the proper hydraulic structure that considers recent climate changes of the nation brought about by global warming should be around the year 2002.

  • The monitoring of urban area, target detection and building reconstruction have been actively studied and investigated since high resolution X-band SAR images could be acquired by airborne and/or satellite SAR systems. This paper describes an efficient approach to reconstruct artificial structures (e.g. apartment, building and house) in urban area using high resolution X-band SAR images. Building footprint was first extracted from 1:25,000 digital topographic map and then a corner line of building was detected by an automatic detecting algorithm. With SAR amplitude images, an initial building height was calculated by the length of layover estimated using KS-test (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test) from the corner line. The interferometric SAR phases were simulated depending on SAR geometry and changable building heights ranging from -10 m to +10 m of the initial building height. With an interferogram from real SAR data set, the simulation results were compared using the method of the phase consistency. One of results can be finally defined as the reconstructed building height. The developed algorithm was applied to repeat-pass TerraSAR-X spotlight mode data set over an apartment complex in Daejeon city, Korea. The final building heights were validated against reference heights extracted from LiDAR DSM, with an RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of about 1~2m.

  • The chi-squared test statistic is usually employed for testing independence of two categorical variables in a two-way contingency table. It is well known that, under independence, the test statistic has an asymptotic chi-squared distribution under multinomial or product-multinomial models. For the case where both margins fixed, the sampling model of the contingency table is a multiple hypergeometric distribution and the chi-squared test statistic follows the same limiting distribution. In this paper, we study the difference between the small sample and large sample distributions of the chi-squared test statistic for the case with fixed margins. For a few small sample cases, the exact small sample distribution of the test statistic is directly computed. For a few large sample sizes, the small sample distribution of the statistic is generated via a Monte Carlo algorithm, and then is compared with the large sample distribution via chi-squared probability plots and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests.

  • When we design coastal and harbol facilities deepwater design wave and wind speed are the important design parameters. Especially, the analysis of these informations is a vital step for the point of disaster prevention. In this study, we made and an extreme value analysis using a series of deep water significant wave data arranged in the 16 direction and supplied by KORDI real-time wave information system ,and the wind data gained from Wan-Do whether Station 1978-2003. The probability distributions considered in this characteristic analysis were the Weibull, the Gumbel, the Log-Pearson Type III, the Normal, the Lognormal, and the Gamma distribution. The parameter for each distribution was estimated by three methods, i.e. the method of moments, the maximum likelihood, and the method of probability weight moments. Furthermore, probability distributions for the extreme data had been selected by using Chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test within significant level of 5%, i,e. 95% reliance level. From this study we found that Gumbel distribution is the most proper model for the deep water design wave height off the southwest coast of Korea. However the result shows that the proper distribution made for the selected site is varied in each extreme data set.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of horticultural activities program for 4th grade nursing students' emotional intelligence and stress coping. The study method was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Participants were recruited with 4th grade nursing students from two nursing colleges. They were assigned to the experimental group (n=29) or the control group (n=30) using a computerized blocked randomization. Horticultural activities program was consisted of 10 sessions which were 2 times a week for 80 mins at each session during 5 weeks. Pretest and posttest were used to measure emotional intelligence and stress coping using the same structured questionnaires. Data was analyzed using frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2-test$, t-test, Fisher's exact test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, independent t-test and paired t-test. The result showed a significant difference that the experimental group's emotional intelligence(t=-3.33, p=.002) and stress coping(t=-2.35, p=.023) score was higher than the control group's. The results of this study suggests that the horticultural activities program is effective in terms of emotional intelligence and stress coping for $4^{th}$ grade nursing students.

  • The Korean peninsula is exposed to typhoons every year. Typhoons cause huge socioeconomic damage because tropical cyclones tend to occur with strong winds and heavy precipitation. In order to understand the complex dependence structure between strong winds and heavy precipitation, the copula links a set of univariate distributions to a multivariate distribution and has been actively studied in the field of hydrology. In this study, we carried out analysis using data of wind speed and precipitation collected from the weather stations in Busan and Jeju. Log-Normal, Gamma, and Weibull distributions were considered to explain marginal distributions of the copula. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Cramer-von-Mises, and Anderson-Darling test statistics were employed for testing the goodness-of-fit of marginal distribution. Observed pseudo data were calculated through inverse transformation method for establishing the copula. Elliptical, archimedean, and extreme copula were considered to explain the dependence structure between strong winds and heavy precipitation. In selecting the best copula, we employed the Cramer-von-Mises test and cross-validation. In Busan, precipitation according to average wind speed followed t copula and precipitation just as maximum wind speed adopted Clayton copula. In Jeju, precipitation according to maximum wind speed complied Normal copula and average wind speed as stated in precipitation followed Frank copula and maximum wind speed according to precipitation observed Husler-Reiss copula.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a community based participatory obesity control program and measure the effects of the program on obesity, exercise habit, eating habit and life habits among obese elementary school children. The community based participatory obesity control program was provided for the experimental group of $4^{th}$ grade elementary school students for 10 weeks. The program included obesity related health educations and counseling once a week, jump rope classes twice a week and folk game classes held once a week. Method: There were 24 students with obesity in the experimental and 27 in the control groups. The collected data were analyzed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, ${\chi}^2$-test, independent t-test and repeated measure ANOVA. Results: After 10weeks of participation in the program, the experimental group showed significantly lower Body Mass Index (p<.001) and waist hip ratio (p=.036), significantly higher exercise habit (p=.004), eating habit (p=.003) and life habit (p=.001) than those in the control group. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that community based participatory obesity management program is effective nursing intervention for managing child obesity.
