The objective of かis study is to investigate the feasibility of piezoelectric transducers as a damage detection system for civil infrastructures. There have been considerable amount of efforts by the modal analysis community to localize damage and evaluate its severity without looking at a reliable way to excite the structure. The detection of damages by modal analysis and similar vibration techniques depends upon the knowledge and estimation of various modal parameters. In addition to the associated difficulties, such low-frequency dynamic response based techniques fail to detect incipient damages. Smart piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) transducers which act as both actuators and sensors in a self-analyzing manner are emerging to be effective in non-parametric health monitoring of structural systems. In this paper, we present the results of an experimental study for the detection of damages using smart PZT transducers on the steel plate. The method of extracting the impedance characteristics of the PZT transducer, which is electro-mechanically coupled to the host structure, is adopted for damage detection. Two damages are simulated and assessed by the bonded PZT transducers for characterization. The experimental results verified the efficacy of the proposed approach and provided a demonstration of good robustness at the realistic steel structures, emphasizing the great potential for developing an automated in situ structural health monitoring system for application to large civil infrastructures without the need to blow the modal parameters.

The capabilities of a high-resolution Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system are presented within the context of deformation measurements of full-scale concrete columns tested under reversed cyclic loading. The system was developed to have very high-resolution such that material strains on the order of the cracking stain of concrete could be measured on the surface of full-scale structural members. The high-resolution DIC system allows the measurement of a wide range of deformations and strains that could only be inferred or assumed previously. The DIC system is able to resolve the full profiles of member curvatures, rotations, plasticity spread, shear deformations, and bar-slip induced rotations. The system allows for automatic and objective measurement of crack widths and other damage indices that are indicative of cumulated damage and required repair time and cost. DIC damage measures contrast prevailing proxy damage indices based on member force-deformation data and subjective damage measures obtained using visual inspection. Data derived from high-resolution DIC systems is shown to be of great use in advancing the state of behavioral knowledge, calibrating behavioral and analytical models, and improving simulation accuracy.
Research on Lamb wave-based damage identification in plate-like structures depends on precise knowledge of dispersive wave velocity. However, boundary reflections with the same frequency of interest and greater amplitude contaminate direct waves and thus compromise measurement of Lamb wave dispersion in different materials. In this study, non-reflecting boundaries were proposed in both numerical and experimental cases to facilitate time-frequency characterization of Lamb wave dispersion. First, the Lamb wave equations in isotropic and laminated materials were analytically solved. Second, the non-reflecting boundaries were used as a series of frames with gradually increased damping coefficients in finite element models to absorb waves at boundaries while avoiding wave reflections due to abrupt property changes of each frame. Third, damping clay was sealed at plate edges to reduce the boundary reflection in experimental test. Finally, the direct waves were subjected to the slant-stack and short-time Fourier transformations to calculate the dispersion curves of phase and group velocities, respectively. Both the numerical and experimental results suggest that the boundary reflections are effectively alleviated, and the dispersion curves generated by the time-frequency analysis are consistent with the analytical solutions, demonstrating that the combination of non-reflecting boundary and time-frequency analysis is a feasible and reliable scheme for characterizing Lamb wave dispersion in plate-like structures.
Objective: This study is to review three representative psychological perspectives that explain scientific construct of emotion, that are the discrete emotion model, appraisal model, and dimensional model. Background: To develop emotion sensitive interface is the fusion area of emotion and scientific technology, it is necessary to have a balanced mixture of both the scientific theory of emotion and practical engineering technology. Extensional theories of the emotional structure can provide engineers with relevant knowledge in functional application of the systems. Method: To achieve this purpose, firstly, literature review on the basic emotion model and the circuit model of discrete emotion model as well as representative theories was done. Secondly, review on the classical and modern theories of the appraisal model emphasizing cognitive appraisal in emotion provoking events was conducted. Lastly, a review on dimensional theories describing emotion by dimensions and representative theories was conducted. Results: The paper compared the three models based on the prime points of the each model. In addition, this paper also made a comment on a need for a comprehensive model an alternative to each model, which is componential model by Scherer(2001) describing numerous emotional aspects. Conclusion: However, this review suggests a need for an evolved comprehensive model taking consideration of social context effect and discrete neural circuit while pinpointing the limitation of componential model. Application: Insight obtained by extensive scientific research in human emotion can be valuable in development of emotion sensitive interface and emotion recognition technology.

Technology-oriented national R&D programs produce intellectual property as their final result. Patents, as typical industrial intellectual property, are therefore considered an important factor when evaluating the outcome of R&D programs. Among the main components of patent evaluation, in particular, the patent right quality is a key component constituting patent value, together with marketability and usability. Current approaches for patent right quality evaluation rely mostly on intrinsic knowledge of patent attorneys, and the recent rapid increase of national R&D patents is making expert-based evaluation costly and time-consuming. Therefore, this study defines a hierarchy of patent right quality and then proposes how to quantify the evaluation process of patent right quality by combining text mining and regression analysis. This study will contribute to understanding of the systemic view of the patent right quality evaluation, as well as be an efficient aid for evaluating patents in R&D program assessment processes.

In this paper, a generalized blind adaptive algorithm is introduced for multi-user detection of direct sequence code division multiple access (OS-COMA) wireless communication systems. The main property of the proposed algorithm is its ability to resolve the multipath fading channel resulting in inter symbol interference (ISI) as well as multiple access interference (MAI). Other remarkable properties are its low complexity and mitigation to the near-far problem as well as its insensitivity to asynchronous transmission. The proposed system is based on the minimization of the output energy and convergence to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector. It is blind in the sense that it needs no knowledge of the other users' signatures, only the intended user signature and timing are required. Furthermore, the convergence of the minimum output energy (MOE) detector to the MMSE detector is analytically proven in case of M-ary PSK. Depicted results show that the performance of the generalized system dominates those previously considered. Further improvements are obtained when multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technique is employed.
In this research, an internal model based method is proposed to estimate the structural displacements and velocities under ambient excitation using only acceleration measurements. The structural response is assumed to be within the linear range. The excitation is assumed to be with zero mean and relatively broad bandwidth such that at least one of the fundamental modes of the structure is excited and dominates in the response. Using the structural modal parameters and partial knowledge of the bandwidth of the excitation, the internal models of the structure and the excitation can be respectively established, which can be used to form an autonomous state-space representation of the system. It is shown that structural displacements, velocities, and accelerations are the states of such a system, and it is fully observable when the measured output contains structural accelerations only. Reliable estimates of structural displacements and velocities are obtained using the standard Kalman filtering technique. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method has been demonstrated and evaluated via numerical simulations on an eight-story lumped mass model and experimental data of a three-story frame excited by the ground accelerations of actual earthquake records.

Kalman filtering (KF) is hard to be applied to the SINS (Strap-down Inertial Navigation System)/RDSS (Radio Determination Satellite Service) integrated navigation system directly because the time delay of RDSS positioning in active mode is random. BP (Back-Propagation) Neuron computing as a powerful technology of Artificial Neural Network (ANN), is appropriate to solve nonlinear problems such as the random time delay of RDSS without prior knowledge about the mathematical process involved. The new algorithm betakes a BP neural network (BPNN) and velocity feedback to aid KF in order to overcome the time delay of RDSS positioning. Once the BP neural network was trained and converged, the new approach will work well for SINS/RDSS integrated navigation. Dynamic vehicle experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of the system. The experiment results demonstrate that the horizontal positioning accuracy of the new approach is 40.62 m (1 ${\sigma}$), which is better than velocity-feedback-based KF. The experimental results also show that the horizontal positioning error of the navigation system is almost linear to the positioning interval of RDSS within 5 minutes. The approach and its anti-jamming analysis will be helpful to the applications of SINS/RDSS integrated systems.

Recently, thiophene oligomer with short chain lengths has received much attention as model compounds for facilitating better understanding of electronic and optical properties of polymers, because oligomer is well-defined chemical systems and its conjugation chain length can be exactly controlled. Moreover, organic this films based on conjugated thiophene oligomer have potential for application to electronic and optoelectronic devices such as MISFETs(metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistors) and LEDs(light-emitting diodes). However, there is little knowledge on electronic and structural properties of linear-conjugated oligothiophenes in solid states, compared with those in solutions. $\alpha$-sexithienyl($\alpha$-6T) thin-films were deposited by OMBD(Organic Molecular Beam Deposition) technique, where the $\alpha$-6T was synthesized and purified by the sublimation method. The $\alpha$-6T films were deposited under various conditions. The effects of deposition rate, substrate temperature, and vacuum pressure on the formation of these films have been studied. The molecules in the $\alpha$-6T film deposited at a low deposition rate under a high vacuum were aligned almost perpendicular to the substrate. The $\alpha$-6T films deposited at an elevated substrate temperature showed higher conductivity than the film deposited at room temperature. Electrical characterization of these films will be also executed by using four-point probe measurement technique.
The purpose of this study is to develop and validate an Engineering Empathy Instrument. Engineering empathy is defined as the ability that encompasses the following three qualities, a skill to interpret social issues and phenomenon that may occur in the process of interactions between human beings and engineering systems, a practical orientation that enables one to take stakeholders' perspectives to carry out an engineering project, and a professional way of being that acknowledges empathic skills and associated practice orientations. Based on this notion, we develop a scale to measure engineering empathy and have surveyed 429 engineering students. Evidence for the validity and reliability of the scale is presented. In conclusion, we find that engineering empathy can be measured and conceptualized as three domains: a Learnable Skill (ELS), a Practical Orientation (EPO), and a Professional Way (EPW). We also find that sophomores show the highest level of engineering empathy as compared with other graders. While students accumulate technical knowledge, their understanding about engineering in social and interpretational contexts gets weakened. This implies that engineering education necessarily emphasizes the impacts of engineering solutions in interpersonal, societal, technologies, and environmental contexts.
