  • The outbreak of the corona virus diseases (COVID-19) in the late 2019 has affected all facets of educational system including library and information services. Reference services, an important aspect of library services are not exempted from this impact. This study therefore, investigated the impact of COVI\D-19 pandemic on the use of reference services and sources by postgraduate students using Kenneth Dike Library (KDL), University of Ibadan, as a case study. Using descriptive survey of correlational type, the study adopted the use of structured questionnaire to randomly select three hundred (300) postgraduate users of reference sources and services in KDL using online survey monkey. Of the three hundred (300) copies, two hundred and twenty three (223) copies, repre- senting 74.3% were retrieved and used for analysis. Findings revealed that, in spite of COVID-19 pandemic, most postgraduate students used Current Awareness Services (203, 91.0%, mean = 3.19), Reference Sources (202, 90.5%, mean = 3.18) and On-line Public Access Catalogue (195, 87.4%, mean = 3.13); low frequency of bibliotherapy (mean=2.22), Reader's Advisory services (mean=2.30) and inter-library loan (mean=2.13) and that COVID-19 pandemic had high impact on post- graduate students' use of reference services in Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan. Based on the findings, recommendations were made that library management should consider the adoption of virtual reference services (VRS) in addition to the conventional mode of refer- ence services to enhance patronage in the COVID-19 era. The library users should also be trained on how to take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to learn new skills in the digital space that will eventually optimize the usage of the library remotely.

  • Recently, public libraries have increased in quantity, while various problems have arisen regarding the operation of public libraries, such as lack of librarian manpower and facilities. Additionally, an increase in the number of public libraries does not correlate to an increase in the utilization of public libraries, and thus developing various services is needed to maintain the continued use of public libraries. This study examined which types of use motivations affect the intention of knowledge exchange in public libraries when using public libraries based on the self-determination theory. It also looked at how the use motivations and the intention of knowledge exchange vary depending on the frequency of public library use. According to an online survey of 230 users of public libraries, extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation, autonomy, competence, and relatedness as independent variables had a positive impact on the level of knowledge exchange. In addition, the higher the frequency of public library use, the higher the needs for autonomy and relatedness were. Based on the results, it was suggested that the knowledge exchange needs to be established as a new service of public libraries by offsetting extrinsic motivation that emerged from by negative influences and promoting intrinsic motivation, autonomy and competence.

  • Currently, it is not easy for most domestic public libraries to collect and provide reliable health information services on their own. Health information is distributed or professional, making it inconvenient for users to use. Based on the implications derived from the case study, the Library Health Information Integration Service Model was proposed as a specialized information service. The model consists of a composition shared by librarians, health and medical experts, and users, focusing on library websites that provide integrated health information integration services, and has the following features. First, it provides health and medical information on a specialized subject. Second, it provides integrated health and medical information services provided in various ways. Third, librarians and health and medical experts work together to provide information services. Fourth, users can freely use health information integration services online and offline. The model presented in this study means that libraries can play a leading role in health information integration services to increase the utilization rate of public libraries and further contribute to librarians serving as experts in health information services.

To keep abreast with the changing social environment industrial development and explosive increase of knowledge, the university library must also find new a n.0, pproaches to better serve the users in the university community. Also, on the part of university faculty, instructional methods must be improved from text book oriented education toward assignment oriented education. To facilitate effective teaching, the role of university library and its efficient use has become more important and indispensable. The objective of this study was to review the literature, and to find out current practice among students and professional librarians on the library instruction in order to find ways to strengthen and improve it. A specially designed questionnaire was used to survey current status. Results of the survey are summarized as follows; (1) Most university students received some guidance on library utilization as part of their freshman orientation program. However, it is found that the elementary nature of the guidance program was insufficient for their subsequent actual attempt to use. Students are not familiar with library organization, search procedure, and they lack basic knowledge on library service available to them. (2) Problem areas related to library instruction are insufficient amount of time allocated for the guidance program, big size of orientation program, and lack of interest on the part of students, etc. It is therefore recommended that the above mentioned problem areas be overcome through cooperative and concerted efforts among faculty members, professional librarians, and the university administration by increasing library instruction hours, improving the contents of program in its scope and depth to be practically useful. To sum up, the lecture oriented education should be shifted toward library oriented education by improved instruction program on library use.

  • As the South Korean government has recently announced its intention to implement a three-year policy on building additional libraries and complex community centers as the community-based everyday life SOC project, society has shed new light on libraries as public service institutions. Accordingly, this study was conducted to determine the factors affecting resident satisfaction with public libraries, intention to use, and intention to recommend public libraries, for use as basic data to increase resident satisfaction and use of public libraries in South Korea. To this end, we conducted a survey on residents who have experience with using 13 public libraries designated as regional representative libraries in South Korea. The surveyed data was verified with a structural equation using AMOS. The results were as follows. First, all factors, such as material, facility, staff, program, and service, except location and space, had a significant effect on resident satisfaction with public libraries. Second, it was found that satisfaction had a significant effect on the intention to use and intention to recommend. The results of this study may contribute to qualitatively improving public library services by reflecting the changing needs of users, as well as social trends at the working level of libraries in South Korean society.
