  • Purpose: This study investigates the relationship among nutrition knowledge, food habit problems and dietary attitudes in nursing students. Methods: A total of 856 nursing students participated in the study. Data was analyzed by frequencies, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple stepwise regressions via SPSS WIN 21.0. Results: The mean scores for nutrition knowledge and dietary attitudes were above average and the score related to food habit problems was high. Dietary attitudes correlated positively with nutrition knowledge, but dietary attitudes correlated negatively with food habit problems. Significant predictors of dietary attitudes included: food habit problems, interest in nutrition and health, exercise, and drinking. The regression model explained 16.4% of perceived dietary attitudes. Conclusion: To improve dietary attitudes among nursing students, nursing educators should develop nutritional educational intervention programs in order to promote nutrition knowledge and identify food habit problems.

  • Purpose: This study aims at comparing nurses' knowledge, attitudes and nursing intention toward AIDS and Chronic Hepatitis B(CHB). Methods: The data were collected through self-reported questionnaires from 245 nurses between July and August, 2011. The nurses were recruited from 3 hospitals located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression were adopted to analyze the data. Results: Regarding AIDS, higher knowledge level was correlated with positive attitudes only(r=-.22, p<.001), which were correlated with favorable nursing intention(r=-.41, p<.001). Higher CHB knowledge level was correlated with both positive attitudes toward CHB(r=-.14, p= .030) and favorable nursing intention(r=.18, p= .004). Nursing intention toward AIDS was affected by attitudes(${\beta}$=.58, p<.001) and explained 16.6% of the variance. Both knowledge(${\beta}$=.35, p=.028) and attitudes(${\beta}$=-.49, p<.001) influenced nursing intention toward CHB and explained 19.1% of the variance. Conclusion: We need to promote nurses' positive attitudes toward AIDS to increase their nursing intention for people living with AIDS.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the importance and sensitivity to nursing interventions of four nursing sensitive nursing outcomes selected from the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC). Outcomes for this study were 'Knowledge: Diet', 'Knowledge: Disease Process', 'Knowledge: Energy Conservation', and 'Knowledge: Health Behaviors'. Method: Data were collected from 183 nurses working in 2 university hospitals. Fehring method was used to estimate outcome and indicators' content and sensitivity validity. Multiple and stepwise regression were used to evaluate relationships between each outcome and its indicators. Result: Results confirmed the importance and nursing sensitivity of outcomes and their indicators. Key indicators of each outcomes were found by multiple regression. 'Knowledge: Diet' was suggested for adding new indicators because the variance explained by indicators was relatively low. Not all of the indicators selected for stepwise regression model were rated for highly in Fehring method. The R² statistics of the stepwise regression models were between 18 and 63% in importance by selected indicators and between 34 and 68% in contribution by selected indicators. Conclusion: This study refined what outcomes and indicators will be useful in clinical practice. Further research will be required for the revision of outcome and indicators of NOC. However, this study refined what outcomes and indicators will be useful in clinical practice.

  • Purpose: Knowledge, clinical reasoning, and self-confidence are the basis for undergraduate education, and determine students' level of competence. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of the addition of a one-time simulation experience to the didactic curriculum on nursing students' knowledge acquisition, clinical reasoning skill, and self-confidence. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental crossover design consisted of intervention and wait-list control groups. Participants were non-randomly assigned to the first intervention group (Group A, n=48) or the wait-list control group (Group B, n=46). Knowledge level was assessed through a multiple choice written test, and clinical reasoning skill was measured using a nursing process model-based rubric. Self-confidence was measured using a self-reported questionnaire. Results: Results indicated that students in the simulation group scored significantly higher on clinical reasoning skill and related knowledge than those in the didactic lecture group; no difference was found for self-confidence. Conclusion: Findings suggest that undergraduate nursing education requires a simulation-based curriculum for clinical reasoning development and knowledge acquisition.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of BSE education and practice on knowledge, self efficacy and performance in female nursing students. Method: The subjects consisted of 40 students from 2 nursing colleges. They responded to questionnaires that included knowledge, self-efficacy and performance of BSE within a 3-month interval. The experimental group was subjected to a 90 minute-educational session. Their knowledge of BSE was measured using Choi's tool and self-efficacy was measured using Champion and Scott. Result: Self-efficacy and frequency of BSE performance in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group while BSE knowledge was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: Nursing students don't put their knowledge into practice. This fact suggests that changing a behavior needs something more than knowledge. In this study, the BSE education had an effect on self-efficacy and performance. Therefore, practical education needs to be reinforced for nursing students to perform BSE for their own health and to be able to demonstrate it for clients.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between handwashing knowledge and handwashing compliance in nursing students and to identify the moderation and mediation effects of self-efficacy and perceived behavioral control on the relationship. Methods: The participants were 172 nursing college students who completed the self-report measures. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient, Multiple regression analysis was used to test moderation and mediation effects. Results: The score for knowledge of handwashing was higher in participants who had completed fundamentals of nursing practicum (t=-6.54, p<.001) and the score for compliance with handwashing was higher in participants who had completed clinical practicum (t=-3.81, p<.001) or fundamentals of nursing practicum (t=-5.97, p<.001). Self-efficacy showed a significant moderation effect (z=2.21, p=.027) but not a mediation effect while perceived behavioral control had a significant mediation effect but not a moderation effect on the relationship between knowledge of handwashing and compliance. Conclusion: Findings indicate that clinical practicum and fundamentals of nursing practicum were helpful to nursing students in acquiring knowledge and in practicing proper handwashing technique. These findings suggest that continuing and repetitive education programs on handwashing need to be enhanced and strategies to strengthen self-efficacy and perceived behavioral control need to be included in education programs.
