The purpose of this study was to analyze the knowledge and ability levels of middle school students in four areas: conceptual understanding, argument construction, justification schemes, and use of scientific knowledge in a causal explanation for a genetic phenomenon. A group of 162 middle school students who have taken a class titled Genetics and Evolution participated in the study. Each student answered-and justified the answer to-one question pertaining to genetics. Ability levels were rated from level 0 to level 4, with 4 being the top rating. Students were required to choose one of two competing arguments to explain whether green seed pimps and red seed pimps of the same size and shape were the same species or not. Analyzing conceptual understanding: 47% of the respondents provided the correct answer. Analyzing their abilities for constructing an argument: 75% of the students with the correct answer and 42% of the students with the incorrect answer were evaluated to be at ability level 3 or 4 for argument construction. Analyzing the students' justification schemes: "Scientific idea" and "Analogy" were the most frequently used schemes. Analyzing their use of scientific knowledge: of the students who selected the scientific idea justification scheme, 36% used the correct scientific knowledge, but the remainder used inaccurate or nonspecific scientific knowledge. These findings provide implication for encouraging argumentative writing explaining scientific phenomena regarding epistemic practice.
This study is a case study of the process of emerging for creative products to lead world science and technology. The aim of the study is to understand the emerging process of scientific creative products, and is to provide the direction of gifted education that discovers and trains globally competitive science talents through this. To discuss the emerging process of creative products, this study has academically discussed the creativity of the complexity of dealing with theory of evolution, the real life settings, and self-organization of experience etc., and has methodologically adopted the qualitative research method through a case study to look at the structures and processes. Data collection has been formed through a discussion with 12 Korean scientists who have created selected creative products, greatly contributed for the world science and technology(12 areas). The analysis has been carried out by the latter part positivist methods. As a result, the emerging process of creative products in the field of science and technology were separated into four steps: (1)the foundation stage of knowledge, (2)the exploration stage of knowledge, (3)the construction stage of knowledge, and (4)the emerging stage of knowledge. Each stage has been revealed growing up through the macro-system and the self-organization of each micro-systems.
P2P (Peer to Peer) techniques have been well applied to file sharing due to its cost-effectiveness and convenience. Dynamic network evolution is another good thing for P2P according to addition and deletion of nodes and change of files a node has. Our research proposes a P2P-based KMS (Knowledge Management System). Knowledge of enterprises spreads all over sub-organizations like oversea factories and sales departments and is changed in dynamic manner. P2P techniques are, therefore well matched with knowledge management domain. In order to increase search efficiency, we introduce social network theory into P2P-based KMS. Social network technique makes the most similar nodes (in KMS domain, nodes which has the most similar knowledge) its own neighbors, which makes eventually search efficiency increase. We developed our prototype system P2P-SN-KMS and evaluated by simulation.
Continuing advances in the formulation and solution of risk-sensitive control problems have reached a point at which this topic is becoming one of the more intriguing modern paradigms of feedback thought. Despite a prevailing atmosphere of close scrutiny of theoretical studies, the risk-sensitive body of knowledge is growing. Moreover, from the point of view of applications, the detailed properties of risk-sensitive design are only now beginning to be worked out. Accordingly, the time seems to be right for a survey of the historical underpinnings of the subject. This paper addresses the beginnings and the evolution, over the first quarter-century or so, and points out the close relationship of the topic with the notion of optimal cost cumulates, in particular the cost variance. It is to be expected that, in due course, some duality will appear between these notions and those in estimation and filtering. The purpose of this document is to help to lay a framework for that eventuality.
Artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and ubiquitous robotic companions -the three most notable technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution-are receiving renewed attention each day. Technologies that can be experienced in daily life, such as autonomous navigation, real-time translators, and voice recognition services, are already being commercialized in the field of information technology. In the biosciences field in Korea, such technologies have become known to the local public with the introduction of the AI doctor Watson in large number of hospitals. Additionally, AlphaFold, a technology resembling the AI AlphaGo for the game Go, has surpassed the limit on protein folding predictions-the most challenging problems in the field of protein biology. This report discusses the significance of AI technology and big data on the bioscience field. The introduction of automated robots in this field is not just only for the purpose of convenience but a prerequisite for the real sense of AI and the consequent accumulation of basic scientific knowledge.

This study introduces a new tool breakage detecting technology comprised of an unsupervised neural network combined with adaptive time series autoregressive(AR) model where parameters are estimated recursively at each sampling instant using a parameter adaptation algorithm based on an RLS(Recursive Least Square). Experiment indicates that AR parameters are good features for tool breakage, therefore it can be detected by tracking the evolution of the AR parameters during milling process. an ART 2(Adaptive Resonance Theory 2) neural network is used for clustering of tool states using these parameters and the network is capable of self organizing without supervised learning. This system operates successfully under the wide range of cutting conditions without a priori knowledge of the process, with fast monitoring time.
With the discovery of Didineis sibirica and Alysson moticola in South Korea, the tribe Alyssontini Dalla Torre of the Korean Peninsula is supplemented. The genus Didineis Wesmael is reported for the first time in the Korean Peninsula. It is easily separated by the following combination of characteristics from the genus Alysson, another member of Alyssontini occurring in the Far East. In both sexes, fore wing media diverging much before cu-a; metapleuron much less half as long as high; metasomal tergum 2 without pale spots. In males, the last antennal segment is strongly incurved and opposed by a projection from antennal segment 12. Alysson monticola is also new to Korea. Of the Far Eastern species with triangular propodeal enclosure, this species is unique with extended inter-antennal marking. In this study, list of all the known Korean species of the tribe, diagnostic characteristics and digital images are provided.

This paper focuses on self-organization of fuzzy rules for performance management of computer communication networks serving manufacturing systems. The performance management aims to improve the network performance in handling various types of messages by on-line adjustment of protocol parameters. The principle of fuzzy logic has been used in representing the knowledge of human expert on the performance management and in deriving management decisions. In this paper, we present applications of genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and evolution strategies to find a better set of rules for various network conditions. The efficacy of this self-organization is demonstrated by discrete simulation of an IEEE 802.4 network.
X chromosome inactivation (XCI) is a process that enables mammalian females to ensure the dosage compensation for X-linked genes. Investigating the mechanism of XCI might provide deeper understandings of chromosomal silencing, epigenetic regulation of gene expressions, and even the course of evolution. Studies on mammalian XCI conducted with mice have revealed many fundamental findings on XCI. However, difference of murine and human XCI necessitates the further investigation in human XCI. Recent success in reprogramming of differentiated cells into pluripotent stem cells showed the reversibility of XCI in vitro, X chromosome reactivation (XCR), which provides another tool to study the change in X chromosome status. This review summarizes the current knowledge of XCI during early embryonic development and describes recent achievements in studies of XCI in reprogramming process.

The concept of Chiari malformations emerged toward the end of $19^{th}$ century from Chiari's initial descriptions of "alterations in the cerebellum resulting from cerebral hydrocephalus." In 1891, Hans Chiari(1851-1916) suggested cerebellar ectopia in which he classified Type I as "elongation of the tonsils and medial parts of the inferior lobes of the cerebellum into cone-shaped projections, which accompany the medulla oblongata into the spinal canal. The incidence of Chiari malformation has been found to be between 0.56% and 0.77% on MR imaging studies, as well as 0.62% in brain dissection studies. the definition of the adult Chiari malformation has varied with the evolution of neurodiagnositic capabilities and knowledge of physiopathology. This disorder can be associated with significant symptomatology, risk of secondary injury due to trauma, and the risk of progression and damage of the spinal cord due to associated Syringomyelia. Syringomyelia is found in 50 to 70% of Chiari I malformation. It is the clinical judgment of the physicians evaluating this disorder that is of the importance to avoid the therapeutic extremes of pursuing unnecessary surgery or withholding necessary treatment from patients.
