  • Coal fly ash of thermal power plants converted into mesoporous materials MCM-41. The synthesized material was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and EDS techniques. The catalytic activity of prepared material was studied for the synthesis of 5-arylindene malononitriles via Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes and malonontrile is described. The features of present method are easy handling, stability, reusability, and eco-friendliness of catalyst, high yields, short reaction time, simple experimental and work up procedure.

  • A series of amine functionalized MCM-41 catalysts were prepared by aminopropyltrimethoxysilane grafting and their catalytic performance in Knoevenagel reaction of selected substrates was investigated. Water resistant and catalytically active amine grafted MCM-41 was prepared by post-synthetic silylation using methyltrimethoxysilane ; hydrogen bonding of the water molecules formed during the condensation reaction to the active N group was suppressed, which led to high TON of the reaction. Amine functionalized MCM-41 prepared by coating method produced high conversion, but the TON of the catalyst was much lower than that of the amine grafted MCM-41; pore volume of the functionalized MCM-41 decreased substantially and large portion of the immobilized amine is believed to be hydrogen bonded to each other, which can result in decrease in the basicity of the N group. A secondary amine group was prepared by room temperature condensation between aminopropylsilane and chloropropylsilane, and the MCM-41 grafted with the secondary amine group demonstrated the highest catalytic activity among the catalysts prepared.

  • The Indium modified mesoporous zeolite AlMCM-41 were synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) techniques. The Knoevenagel condensation of aldehyde with malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate was carried out at reflux condition in ethanol by using heterogeneous In/AlMCM-41 catalyst. This method is fast, efficient, easy work-up and eco-friendly to afford the corresponding Knoevenagel adducts. The catalyst was recovered and reused for several cycles with consistent activity.

  • In this paper poly (4-methyl vinylpyridinium hydroxide)/SBA-15 composite was prepared as a highly efficient heterogeneous basic catalyst by in situ polymerization method for the first time. It was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET, TGA, SEM and back titration using NaOH. This catalyst exhibited the excellent catalytic activities for the Knoevenagel condensation of various aldehydes with ethyl cyanoacetate. Over this catalyst, ${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated carbonyl compounds were obtained in the reasonable yield at $95^{\circ}C$ in 10 - 30 min in $H_2O$ as a solvent with a 100% selectivity to the condensation products. Catalyst could be easily recycled after the reaction and it could be reused without the significant loss of activity/selectivity performance. No by-product formation, high yields, short reaction times, mild reaction conditions and operational simplicity with reusability of the catalyst were the salient features of the present synthetic protocol. Presence of $H_2O$ as a solvent was also recognized as a "green method".

  • Four copper(II) complexes have been prepared using macrocyclic ligands. The macrocyclic ligands have been synthesized by the condensation reaction of diethyl phthalate with Schiff bases derived from o-phenylene diamine and Knoevenagel condensed ${\beta}-ketoanilides$ (obtained by the condensation of acetoacetanilide and substituted benzaldehydes). The ligands and copper complexes have been characterized on the basis of Microanalytical, Mass, UV-Vis., IR and CV spectral studies, as well as conductivity data. On the basis of spectral studies, a square-planar geometry for the copper complexes has been proposed. The in vitro antifungal activities of the compounds were tested against fungi such as Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus stolonifer, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizoctonia bataicola and Candida albicans. All the synthesized copper complexes showed stronger antifungal activities than free ligands. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the copper complexes were found in the range of $8{\sim}28\;{\mu}g/ml$. These compounds represent a novel class of metal-based antifungal agents which provide opportunities for a large number of synthetic variations for modulation of the activities.

  • The first synthetic route to 5'-norcarbocyclic C-nucleoside [7-oxa-7,9-dideazadenosine (furo[3,2-d]pyrimidine) and 9-deazaadenosine (pyrrolo[3,2-d]pyrimidine)] phosphonic acids from commercially available 1,3-dihydroxy cyclopentane was described. The key C-C bond formation from sugar to base precursor was performed using Knoevenagel-type condensation from a ketone derivative. Synthesized C-nucleoside phosphonic acids were tested for anti-HIV activity as well as anti-leukemic activity. Compound 26 showed significant anti-leukemic activity.

  • Novel push-pull chromophores containing 5’-(4-(bis(9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)aniline (bisDMFA) as a donor and phenylazo-methylpyrrolyl-boron difluoride (PhAPy-BF2) as an acceptor were designed and synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation reaction for organic solar cells. Various electron withdrawing moieties were effectively introduced using 2,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole to afford new asymmetric BF2-azopyrrole molecules that were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry measurements.
