Knock Characteristic Analysis of Gasoline and LPG Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engine (가솔린과 LPG 예혼합 압축 착화 엔진의 노킹 특성)

  • The knock characteristics in an engine were investigated under homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) operation. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)and gasoline were used as fuels and injected at the intake port using port fuel injection equipment. Di-methyl ether (DME) was used as an ignition promoter and was injected directly into the cylinder near compression top dead center (TDC). A commercial variable valve timing device was used to control the volumetric efficiency and the amount of internal residual gas. Different intake valve timingsand fuel injection amounts were tested to verify the knock characteristics of the HCCI engine. The ringing intensity (RI) was used to define the intensity of knock according to the operating conditions. The RI of the LPG HCCI engine was lower than that of the gasoline HCCI engine at every experimental condition. The indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) dropped when the RI was over 0.5 MW/m2and the maximum combustion pressure was over 6.5MPa. There was no significant relationship between RI and fuel type. The RI can be predicted by the crank angle degree (CAD) at 50 CA. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were minimized at high RI conditions. The shortest burn duration under low RI was effective in achieving low HC and CO emissions.

  • Hydrogen-compressed natural gas (HCNG) blend has attracted attention as a fuel that can reduce $CO_2$ emissions because it has low carbon content and burns efficiently. An increase in the compression ratio of HCNG engines was considered as one of the methods to improve their efficiency and reduce $CO_2$ emissions. However, a high combustion rate and flame temperature cause abnormal combustion such as pre-ignition or knocks, which in turn can cause damage to the engine components and decrease the engine power. In this study, the performance and knock characteristics with a change in the compression ratio of an HCNG engine were analyzed. The combustion characteristics of HCNG fuel were evaluated as a function of the excess air ratio using a conventional CNG engine. The effects of the compression ratio on the engine performance were evaluated through the same experimental procedures.

  • In this paper, we investigated the improvement of characteristics of knock, emission and fuel consumption rate by optimizing the location and size of water transfer holes in cylinder head gasket without change of engine water jacket design itself. The cooling system was modified in the direction of reducing the metal temperature in the head and increasing the metal temperature in the block. The optimization of water transfer holes in cylinder head gasket was obtained by "flow visualization test". The water transfer holes were concentrated in front side of the engine in order to reduce thermal boundary layer in the water jacket of No. 2 and No. 3 combustion changer in the cylinder head, which would have a large knock intensity, and increase thermal boundary layer in the water jacket of the cylinder block. When the modified coolant flow pattern was applied as proposed in this paper, the knock characteristic was improved. The spark timing was advanced up to 2$^{\circ}$ in low and middle speed range at a full load. In addition, HC emission at MBT was reduced by 5.2%, and the fuel consumption rate was decreased up to 1% in the driving condition of 2400 rpm and 250 KPa. However, since this coolant flow pattern mentioned in this paper might deteriorate the performance of vehicle cooling system due to the coolant flow rate reduction, a properly optimized point should be obtained. obtained.

  • Among the various prime movers for combined heat and power (CHP) system, the CNG engine is the most commonly used power generation equipment of which power is less than 1MW. The 300 kW class CNG engine for CHP can meet stringent emission regulations with the adoption of stoichiometric air-fuel ratio control and three way catalyst. As the thermal efficiency of the stoichiometric ratio engine is lower than that of lean burn engine, it is necessary to operate the stoichiometric engine at its minimum spark advance for the best torque (MBT). However, knock control should be introduced for the engine under high intake air temperature conditions because MBT operating conditions are generally very close to those of knock occurrence. In this study, engine performances and knocking characteristics were experimentally investigated for the CNG engine that needs to be operated at higher intake air temperature conditions than normal conditions.

  • A classic examples of the abnormal combustions are the knock and misfire, which raise noxious performance and life of the engine. A heavy knock can also cause severe damages to the engine itself, which gives more reason why it must be detected and corrected. With the response of the today's requirements, we have researched the new diagnostic system which uses the breakdown voltage characteristics between electrodes of spark plug. This breakdown voltage depends on the pressure, temperature and even the shape and material of electrodes. But there is no data of breakdown voltage in case of using the spark plug as a electrodes. So, in this study, we show the breakdown voltage characteristic by pressure and temperature in constant volume bomb, which will make it possible to diagnose the engine combustion phenomenon.

  • Adding hydrogen gas in natural gas leads to stable combustion in internal combustion engine and its performances rely on compression ratio. To analyze the effects of compression ratio and rate of hydrogen addition on the engine performance, the characteristics of overall engine performance including emission were investigated by using the medium duty natural gas fueled engine. As results, it was found that compression ratio occurred knock was nearby compression ratio, $\varepsilon$=14 for the case that hydrogen was enriched in the natural gas fueled engine. But slight knock was occurred at $\varepsilon$=14.7 in the case of neat natural gas. Also HC and $CO_2$ were reduced around 80% and 20% respectively when the rate of hydrogen addition was increased to 50% and compression ratio from $\varepsilon$=13 to $\varepsilon$=14.7.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the indicators and the criteria to classify types of train delays of high-speed rail in South Korea. Types of train delays have divided into the chronic delays and the knock-on delays. The Indicators based on relevance, reliability, and comparability were selected with arrival delay rate of over five minutes, median of arrival delays of preceding train and following train, knock-on delay rate of over five minutes, correlation of delay between preceding train and following train on intermediate and last stations, average train headway, average number of passengers per train, and average seat usages. Types of train delays were separated using the Ward's hierarchical cluster analysis. The criteria for classification of train delay were presented by the Fisher's linear discriminant. The analysis on the situational characteristics of train delays is as follows. If the train headway in last station is short, the probability of chronic delay is high. If the planned running times of train is short, the seriousness of chronic delay is high. The important causes of train delays are short headway of train, shortly planned running times, delays of preceding train, and the excessive number of passengers per train.

  • The purpose of this study was undertaken to evaluate of cryopreservation efficiency in ${\alpha}$ 1,3-galactosyltransferase knock-out(GalT KO) cloned miniature pig sperm. To compare ability of frozen-thawed sperm characteristics, three different pig strains (GalT KO) cloned miniature pig, PWG miniature pig and Duroc were used. The ejaculated semen from the three pig species was diluted with same volume extender and added to LEY solution for freezing. The diluted semen was placed in 0.5 ml straws, and freezing was initiated by exposing the straws to liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) vapours for 10 min before placing them into $LN_2$ for cryopreservation. After thawing, the sperm ability were assessed for viability (SYBR-14/PI staining), abnormality (Rose Bengal staining), and acrosome status (intactness, intensity and capacitation) (chlorotetracycline, CTC staining). The viability of frozen-thawed GalT KO pig sperm had no significant difference as compared with Duroc and PWG miniature pig sperm. However, The CTC pattern of frozen-thawed GalT KO cloned miniature pig spermatozoa showed significantly lower rates in F pattern and AR pattern (p<0.05) and significantly higher rates in B pattern than Duroc and PWG miniature pig (p<0.05). The abnormality of GalT KO cloned miniature pig sperm was significantly lower as compared to Duroc and PWG miniature pig sperm (p<0.05). In conclusion, GalT KO cloned miniature pig semen can be cryopreserved successfully and used for artificial insemination reasonably.

  • 기관의 출력성능은 기관으로 공급되는 연료공기의 혼합기량에 따라서 크게 달라진다. 이것은 기관의 출력성능은 기관으로 공급되는 흡기 용량에 따라서 변화하기 때문이다. 고출력을 얻기 위하여는 동일한 조건의 경우 흡기량을 증가시켜 기관 실린더 내에서 많은 연소 열에너지를 생성하는 것이 필요하다. 이러한 관점에서 기관의 체적 효율(volumetric efficiency)을 증가시킬 목적으로 여러가지 흡기 계통의 개서을 도모하고 있으나 흡기 용량을 증가시키는 방법의 하나는 과급기(supercharger)를 이용하는 과급 방식이다. 이와같은 과급방식은 기관의 출력성능의 향상을 가져오지만 기관 내부의 노크(knock), 연소 압력 및 열부하의 증가, 연비 문제등에 관한 여러가지 문제점이 제기되고 있다. 여기서는 과급에 적용되는 과급기의 종류와 과급 성능 특성 등에 대하여 살펴보고 과급기관의 성능에 대하여 다루기로 한다.

  • Ethanol as fuel of Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) engine has become a feasible alternative due to its better anti-knock characteristics and lower nano-particle emission level. There are a number of studies on the emission characteristics from SIDI engine fuelled with various ethanol contents. In general, increase of ethanol contents leaded to decrease of nano-particle discharge, but the other researches showed reversed result at a singular range of ethanol contents. This study focused on the engine combustion performance and nano-particle emission characteristics of SIDI engine fuelled with intermediate ethanol contents.
