Purpose: This study was done to establish reference data for temporo-spatial, kinematic and kinetic parameters for normal Koreans as they age. Methods: Normal adults and children without a previous history of musculoskeletal problems were enrolled in this study. The normal subjects were divided by age into three groups: Group I: children ($11.95{\pm}0.29$ years); Group II: young adults ($23.90{\pm}3.67$ years); Group III: older adults ($71.40{\pm}4.08$ years). The temporo-spatial and kinematic data were measured using 6 MX3 cameras while each subject walked through a 10 m walkway at a self-selected speed. The kinetic data were measured using 2 force plates and were calculated by inverse dynamics. Results: Motion patterns are typically associated with a specific phase of the gait cycle. Our results were as follows: 1. There were significant differences between the different age groups in temporo-spatial parameters such as cadence, double support, time of foot off, stride length, step length, and walking speed. 2. There were significant differences between the groups in kinematic parameters such as range of motion (ROM) of the hip, knee and ankle in the sagittal plane, ROM of the pelvis, hip and knee in the coronal plane and ROM of the pelvis, hip and ankle in the transverse plane. 3. There were significant differences between the groups in kinetic parameters such as joint moments of force, joint mechanical power generation or absorption and ground reaction forces. Conclusion: The results of this study can be utilized (a) as a reference for kinematic and kinetic data of gait analysis in normal Koreans, and (b) as an aide in evaluating and treating patients who have problems relating to gait.
The objective of this study was to analyze the kinematic and kinetic characteristics of two horticultural activities: seed sowing and planting plant. Thirty-one male university students (aged $26.2{\pm}2.0years$) participated in this study. Kinematic factors (movement times, peak velocity, joint angles, and grasp patterns) were assessed using a three-dimensional motion analysis system while the subjects performed the horticultural activities. Kinetic factors (muscle activation of eight upper-limb muscles: the anterior deltoid, serratus anterior, upper trapezius, infraspinatus, latissimus dorsi, biceps brachii, brachioradialis, and flexor carpi radialis) were assessed using surface electromyography. The acts of seed sowing and planting plant were comprised of five tasks which included six types of phases: reaching, grasping, back transporting, forward transporting, watering, and releasing. The movement times, peak velocity, joint angles, and grasp patterns were significantly different across the tasks involved in the horticultural activities. All eight muscles of the upper limbs were utilized during the horticultural activities, and the muscle activation of the serratus anterior was the highest compared to that of the other muscles tested. The kinematic and kinetic characteristics of these horticultural activities showed similar characteristics to reaching and grasping rehabilitation training and daily living activities. The present study provides reference data for common horticultural activities using a kinematic and kinetic analysis.

This study was to performed to get the reference data of the kinematic parameters for normal subjects according to the arm movement type. Forty-five normal subjects participated in this study and preformed four sequence according to the arm movement type : normal arm movement, one arm movement, no arm movement, fitness arm movement. The study data was collected from June to August 2010. The kinematic data were measured using Vicon motion system 6MX3 cameras while each subjects walked through a 10m walkway. There were significant differences according arm movement type in the kinematic parameters such as range of motion (ROM) of the right pelvic, hip in sagittal plane, and ROM of the pelvic, hip, lumbar in coronal plane and ROM of the pelvic, thoracic, lumbar in transverse plane. This study can be utilized as the basic reference data in gait analysis for patients with pathologic gaits.
This paper considers a global resolution of kinematic redundancy under inequality constraints as a constrained optimal control. In this formulation, joint limits and obstacles are regarded as state variable inequality constraints, and joint velocity limits as control variable inequality constraints. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived by using Pontryagin's minimum principle and penalty function method. These conditions leads to a two-point boundary-value problem (TPBVP) with natural, periodic and inequality boundary conditions. In order to solve the TPBVP and to find a global minimum, a numerical algorithm, named two-stage algorithm, is presented. Given initial joint pose, the first stage finds the optimal joint trajectory and its corresponding minimum performance cost. The second stage searches for the optimal initial joint pose with globally minimum cost in the self-motion manifold. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through a simulation with a 3-dof planar redundant manipulator.
Typical biomechanical system such as human body and mammals possess abundant muscles which are more than required for motion generation of such systems. We have shown that the excess number of muscles play important roles in spring-like impedance modulation. redundant kinematic structure, which is another feature of biomechanical systems, allows modulations of inertia and damping properties of such systems. In this work, we propose a frequency modulation algorithm which combines the spring-like impedance with inertia impedance. also, a load distribution method for frequency modulation is also introduced. The frequency modulation represents a simulataneous control of force and kinematic redundancies, which has not been addressed in the literature.

This paper presents a new framework of kinematic tolerance synthesis and describes the implemented algorithm for planar mechanical systems comprised of higher kinematic pairs. Input to the synthesis algorithm is a parametric model of the mechanical system with allowed parameter ranges (tolerance ranges). The model is specified as the part profiles consisting of line and arc segments and the motion axes along which each part moves. The algorithm analyzes tolerance in generalized configuration space, called contact zones bounding the worst-case variations, and identifies bad system variations. The bad system variations then are removed out of the parameter ranges by adjusting the nominal parameter values if possible and then shrinking the ranges otherwise. This cycle is repeated until no more bad variations we found. I show the effectiveness of the algorithm by case studies on several mechanisms.
A functional suspension model is proposed as a kinematic describing function of the suspension, that represents the relative wheel displacement in polynomial form in terms of the vertical displacement of the wheel center and steering rack displacement. The relative velocity and acceleration of the wheel is represented in terms of first and second derivatives of the kinematic describing function. The system equations of motion for the full vehicle dynamic model are systematically derived by using velocity transformation method of multi-body dynamics. The comparison of test and simulation results demonstrates the validity of the proposed functional suspension modeling method. The model is computationally very efficient to achieve real-time simulation on TMS 320C6711 150 MHz DSP board of HILS (hardware-in-the-loop simulation) system for ECU (electronic control unit) evaluation of semi-active suspension.

In this study we presented kinematic and kinetic data of foot joints using approximated equations and partial plantar pressure during gait. The maximum angular displacements of each tarsometatarsal joint were found to range from 4$^{\circ}$to 7$^{\circ}$ and the maximum moments were from 200Nㆍcm to 1500Nㆍcm. It was relatively wide distribution. Foot kinematic data calculated from the approximated equations, which were represented by the correlation between moment and angular displacement, and the data from motion analysis were similar. We found that the movements of foot joint were mainly decided by the passive characteristics of the joint when ground reaction force acts. The method of kinematic and kinetic analysis using approximated equations which is presented in this study is considered useful to describe the movements of foot joints in gait simulations.
This paper studies a class of in-parallel manipulators with special geometry where the forward displacement analysis problem can be solved easier than the fully parallel manipulators. Three horizontal links of this mechanism provide 3DOFs(Degrees of Freedom), which are one degree of orientational freedom and two degrees of translatory freedom. Three vertical links of this mechanism provide 3DOFs, which are two degrees of orientational freedom and one degree of translatory freedom. The main advantages of this manipulator, compared with the Stewart platform type, are the capability to produce pure rotation and to predict the motion of the moving platform easily. Since this manipulator has simple kinematic characteristics compared with the Stewart platform, controlling in real-time is possible due to less computational burden. The purpose of this investigation is to develope an analytical method and systematic method to analyze the basic kinematics of the manipulator. The basic kinematic equations of the manipulator are derived and simulation is carried out to show the performance of the mechanism.

The inverse kinematics problem of Stewart platform is straightforward, but no closed form solution of the forward kinematic problem has been presented. Since we need the real-time forward kinematic solution in MIMO control and the motion monitoring of the platform, it is important to acquire the 6 DOF displacements of the platform from measured lengths of six cylinders in small sampling period. Newton-Raphson method a simple algorithm and good convergence, but it takes too long calculation time. So we reduce 6 nonlinear kinematic equations to 3 polynomials using Nairs method and 3 polynomials to 2 polynomials. Then Newton-Raphson method is used to solve 3 polynomials and 2 polynomials respectively. We investigate operation counts and performance of three methods which come from the equation reduction and Newton-Raphson method, and choose the best method.
