Background: In the past, radiotherapy was the gold standard for the treatment of upper esophageal cancer, but the long-term follow-up was disappointing. There is still ongoing debate on the surgical management of these patients. This study was undertaker to update our experience with upper esophageal carcinoma and to evaluate the effectiveness of surgery. Material and Method: From May 1995 to December 2005, 147 patients with esophageal cancer underwent surgery at our hospital. They were divided into two groups: one group consisted of 23 patients with upper esophageal (cervical and upper thoracic) cancer and another group consisted of 424 patients with lower esophageal (middle thoracic, lower thoracic and abdominal) cancer. We evaluated the effectiveness of surgical treatment between the 2 groups by measuring the rate of complete surgical resection, the postoperative complications, the postoperative mortality, tumor recurrence, the average life expectancy and the long-term survival. Result: On comparing both groups, there was no significant difference in the distribution of the pathological stage and no significant difference in the percentage of performing complete surgical resection. The percentage of post-operative complications was 39.1% (9 out of 23 patients) in the upper esophageal cancer group, and this was significantly higher than 16.9% (21 out of 124 patients) in the lower esophageal cancer group (p<0.05). However, there was no significant statistical difference between the groups for the percentages of postoperative mortality, tumor recurrence or the postoperative average life expectancy. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in operative mortality or surgical effectiveness between the 2 groups. Therefore, we thought that surgical treatment is also effective for treating upper esophageal cancer, but further investigation with large patient populations will be required.
Alginate microspheres, containing fluorescein isothiocyanate-bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA) or green fluorescent protein (GFP) were prepared and used as a model drug to develop the oral vaccine delivery system. The alginate microspheres were coated with poly-L-lysine or chitosan. Two methods, w/o-emulsion and spray, were used to prepare alginate microspheres. To optimize preparation conditions, effects of several factors on the particle size and particle morphology of microsphere, and loading efficiency of model antigen were investigated. In both preparation methods, the particle size and the loading efficiency were enhanced when the concentration of sodium alginate increased. In the w/o-emulsion preparation method, as the concentration of Span 80 was increased from 0.5% to 2%, the particle size was decreased, but the loading efficiency was increased. The higher the emulsification speed was, the smaller the particle size and loading efficiency were. The concentration of calcium chloride did not show any effect on the particle size and loading efficiency. In the spray preparation method, the particle size was increased as the nozzle pressure $(from\;1\;kgf/m^2\;to\;3\;kgf/m^2)$ and spray rate was raised. Increasing calcium chloride concentration (<7%) decreased the particle size, in contrast to no effect of calcium chloride concentration on the w/o-emulsion preparation method. Alginate microspheres prepared by two methods were different in the particle size and loading efficiency, the particle size of microspheres prepared by the spray method was about $2-6\;{\mu}m$, larger than that prepared by the w/o emulsion method $(about\;2{\mu}m)$, and the loading efficiency was also higher with spray method. Furthermore, drying process for the microspheres prepared by the spray was simpler and easier, compared with the w/o emulsion preparation. Therefore, the spray method was chosen to prepare alginate microspheres for further experiments. Release pattern of FITC-BSA in alginate microspheres was evaluated in simulated intestinal fluid and PBS (phosphate buffered saline). Dissolution rate of FITC-BSA from alginate/chitosan microsphere was lower than that from alginate microsphere and alginate/poly-L-lysine microsphere. By confocal laser scanning microscope, it was revealed that alginate/FITC-poly-L-lysine microspheres were present in close apposition epithelium of the Peyer's patches of rabbits following inoculation into lumen of intestine, which proved that microspheres could be taken up by Peyer's patch. In conclusion, it is suggested that alginate microsphere prepared by spray method, showing a particle size of & $10\;{\mu}m$ and a high loading efficiency, can be used as a model drug for the development of oral vaccine delivery system.
To compare the occurrence of Coleoptera by different sampling methods such as light trap, pitfall trap and sweeping, we collected samples every month from April to September,2004 in the Mt. Yeonyeop, Gangwon-do, Korea. According to the sampling methods, the species composition, abundance and dry weight were completely different. We collected 151 species in 35 families (690 individuals) by sweeping method, 148 species in 30 families (689 individuals) by light trap, and 112 species in 18 families (1,674 individuals) by pitfall trap, respectively. The dry weight in collected sample was about 181.46 g in pitfall trap,39.85 g in light trap, and 10.89 g in sweeping method, respectively. Relatively high flight and small-sized beetles such as Coccinellidae, Nitidulidae, Scarabaeidae were collected in light trap. The species diversity was high in July. Unlike the samples collected in light trap, the pitfall trap samples were big-sized saprophagous or carnivorous beetles such as Carabidae, Silphidae, Staphylinidae. The pitfall trap showed relatively the higher number of individual and lower species diversity compared to other methods. The major samples collected by sweeping method were small-sized carnivorous or herbivorous beetles such as Chrysomelidae, Curculionidae, Coccinellidae. The peak of species diversity occurred in May. The similarity was calculated with the Jaccard's index over the light trap-pitfall trap was 0.07, light trap-sweeping was 0.10, and pitfall trap-sweeping was 0.01. Consequently, similarity of sampling methods was relatively low. In conclusion, efficiency of the each sampling methods significantly differed in the species composition of Coleoptera. This study emphasize the necessity of using three sampling methods in the area of diversity research.
In Vitro fertilization of U. unicinctus eggs observed by immunofluorescence and electron microscopes revealed an overview of the meiotic pattern of the tide animals. The eggs have been fertilized early at germinal vesicle stage, followed by germinal vesicle break down (GVBD), but pre-mitotic aster like structure could not be resolved by the methods employed in this work. The meiotic features, such as rotation-shift movement of spindle fibers, behavior of spermatozoonmonaster in the egg cytoplasm and active spindle fiber of the 1st polar body, have been observed. The antitubulin-FITC fluorescence show the 2nd meiotic apparatus appeared firstly parallel to the tangential line of the oolemma, proceeding the meiosis, its bipolarity is rotated and shifted towards the oolemma. The polar bodysite of the oolemma was not amorphous, but active in a sense of anti-tubulin-FITC reactions during the extrusions of the polar bodies. The immunofluorescence reactions of the spermatozoon centriole appeared at a later stage of the 2nd meiosis. During the time periods, the fertilized spermatozoon resided in the egg cytoplasm. Activating the centrioles, spermatozoon approaches towards the chromosomal materials of the 2nd oocyte. This suggests that spermatozoon centrioles initiate and play a roll to fuse male and female pronuclei.
Starches isolated from Seipoong and Daeji potato were classified into small and large granules. The starch granule size for Seipoong and Daeji was in the range of $10-85\;{\mu}m$ and $13-90\;{\mu}m$, respectively. Seipoong starch contained more large granules $(>41\;{\mu}m)$ while Daeji starch had more small granules $(<30\;{\mu}m)$. There was no difference in water-binding capacity both between two starches and among granule sizes. Amylose content for toro starches was the same but was higher in large starch granules than small ones. Swelling powder at $80^{\circ}C$ for parent starches was essentially the same but small starch granules had much higher swelling powder than large ones. The large starch granules for Daeji showed higher peak viscosity by amylograph than small starch granules. No such difference was observed for Seipoong starch. The gelatinization temperature range of small starch granules was wider than that of large ones, but gelatinization enthalpy was the same between large and small starch granules. The starches regardless granule sizes were completely gelatinized at $70^{\circ}C$.
Culture broth of Bacillus subtilis Y3-7 in tryptic soy broth (TSB) isolated from Korean traditional fermented food was evaluated for the inhibition of $\alpha$-glucosidase. The results of in vitro studies using the yeast $\alpha$-glucosidase demonstrated that the culture broth exerted inhibitory effects on $\alpha$-glucosidase with $IC_{50}$ value of 1.62 mg/mL, and functioned as a competitive inhibitor. Furthermore, the culture broth of B. subtilis Y3-7 significantly improved glucose tolerance in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. The blood glucose levels in the mice receiving sucrose supplementation in the culture broth (1 g/kg, 2 g/kg) were measured at 48.7%, which corresponded to 22.2% of the levels measured in the control mice. These results indicated that the culture broth of B. subtilis Y3-7 in TSB might be considered as a useful compound for the preparation of functional foods for diabetic patients.

This experiment was conducted to obtain information of feed value and fermentative quality of wheat cultivar, 'Taejoong' to confirm availability as a whole crop silage. As a result, the heading date of 'Teajoong' is April 27, and plant height is longer than whole crop barley, 'Youngyang' or whole crop wheat, 'Cheongwoo', spike length are also large, fresh and dry matter yield are also high. In case of feed value, 'Taejoong' had higher crude protein content than whole crop barley, 'Youngyang' or whole crop wheat, 'Cheongwoo', lower NDF and ADF contents, and significantly higher digestible nutrient contents(p<0.05). In case of fermentation qulity, pH of 'Taejoong' was 4.2, and lactic acid content was lower than 'Cheongwoo' silage and significantly higher than 'Youngyang' silage(p<0.05). Acetic acid content was significantly lower than 'Youngyang' and 'Cheongwoo' silage(p<0.01), butyric acid content was significantly lower than that of 'Youngyang' silage (p<0.05). The final Flieg's score showed that 'Taejoong' silage was the best. Also income of 'Taejoong' improved than 'Youngyang' or 'Cheongwoo'. Therefore, 'Taejoong' is considered sufficiently available as whole crop for forage.

This study estimated the genetic parameters of growth-related traits from 11-month-old olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) base population in which wild and cultured broodstocks were introduced. The heritability of body weight, total length, body height, body shape, and condition factor of the base population was estimated to be 0.754, 0.753, 0.789, 0.438, and 0.369, respectively. Genetic correlations between body weight and total length, between body weight and body height, and between total length and body height were 0.969, 0.960, and 0.960, respectively, showing highly positive correlation. Genetic correlations between body weight and body shape, between total length and body shape, between body height and body shape were -0.403, -0.344, and -0593, respectively, showing low negative correlation. Overall, olive flounder might be an appropriate selective breeding species with the high heritability of the traits in an 11-month-old population.
The ophemeropterans such as Epeorus pellucidus, Uracanthella rufa and Drunella uculea were dominated in station 1. It was generally showed the stable aquatic communities with low dominance index values throughout the year in station 2. The first dominant species in station 3 were all mayflies with the average DI value of 0.38. The first dominant species of Uracanthella rufa known as relatively tolerant species in station 4. A crustacean species Gammarus spp. have frequently occurred as the 1st or 2nd dominant species in station 5. Limnodrilus socialis, and Chironomus spp. were dominated in stations 6 and 7 Station 1, 2 and 3 were classified as oligosaprobic status according to their average diversity index values ranging from 3.46 to 3.52. Station 7 showed $\alpha$-mesosaprobic water condition with the overall average diversity value of 1.26. In general, the equitability and species richness values in the same sampling areas had close relations with their diversity values. The dendrogram drawn by dissimilarity values among 7 sampling sites indicates that the macrobenthic communities were divided into 3 groups: stations 1, 2, 3 and 4; stations 6 and 7; and station 5 alone.
