Severe fatigue and noise problems of modular bridge expansion joints (MBEJs) are often induced by vehicle loads. However, the dynamic characteristics of single-support MBEJs have yet to be further investigated. To better understand the vibration mechanism of single-support MBEJs under vehicle loads, a 3D finite element model of single-support MBEJ with five center beams is built. Successive vehicle loads are given out and the vertical dynamic responses of each center beams are analyzed under the successive loads. Dynamic amplification factors (DAFs) are also calculated along with increasing vehicle velocities from 20 km/h to 120 km/h with an interval 20 km/h. The research reveals the vibration mechanism of the single-support MBEJs considering coupled center beam resonance, which shows that dynamic responses of a given center beam will be influenced by the neighboring center beams due to their rebound after the vehicle wheels depart. Maximal DAF 1.5 appears at 120 km/h on the second center beam. The research results can be utilized for reference in the design, operation and maintenance of single-support MBEJs.
The reservoir basin bedrock produced significant impact on the long-term service safety of super-high arch dams. It was important for accurately identifying geomechanical parameters and its evolution process of reservoir basin bedrock. The deformation modulus mechanism research methods of reservoir basin bedrock deformation modulus for super-high arch dams was carried out by finite element numerical calculation of the reservoir basin bedrock deformation and in-situ monitoring data analysis. The deformation modulus inversion principle of reservoir basin bedrock in a wide range was studied. The convergence criteria for determining the calculation range of reservoir basin of super-high arch dams was put forward. The implementation method was proposed for different layers and zones of reservoir basin bedrock. A practical engineering of a super-high arch dam was taken as the example.
This paper investigates the concrete permeability through a numerical and statistical approach. Concrete is considered as a random heterogeneous composite of three phases: aggregates, interfacial transition zones (ITZ) and matrix. The paper begins with some classical bound and estimate theories applied to concrete permeability and the influence of ITZ on these bound and estimate values is discussed. Numerical samples for permeability analysis are established through random aggregate structure (RAS) scheme, each numerical sample containing randomly distributed aggregates coated with ITZ and dispersed in a homogeneous matrix. The volumetric fraction of aggregates is fixed and the size distribution of aggregates observes Fuller's curve. Then finite element method is used to solve the steady permeation problem on 2D numerical samples and the overall permeability is deduced from flux-pressure relation. The impact of ITZ on overall permeability is analyzed in terms of ITZ width and contrast ratio between ITZ and matrix permeabilities. Hereafter, 3680 samples are generated for 23 sample sizes and 4 contrast ratios, and statistical analysis is performed on the permeability dispersion in terms of sample size and ITZ characteristics. By sample theory, the size of representative volume element (RVE) for permeability is then quantified considering sample realization number and expected error. Concluding remarks are provided for the impact of ITZ on concrete permeability and its statistical characteristics.
Finite element simulations are increasingly used in structural analysis and design, especially in cases where complex structural and loading conditions are involved. Due to considerable progresses in computer technology as well as nonlinear finite-element analysis techniques in past years, it has become possible to pursue an accurate analysis of the complex blast-induced structural effects by means of numerical simulations. This paper aims to develop a better understanding of the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams (SCCB) under localized blast loading through a numerical parametric study. A finite element model is set up to simulate the blast-resistant features of SCCB using the transient dynamic analysis software LS-DYNA. It is demonstrated that there are three dominant failure modes for SCCB subjected to localized blast loading. The effect of loading position on the behavior of SCCB is also investigated. Finally, a simplified model is proposed for assessing the overall response of SCCB subjected to localized blast loading.
PURPOSE. Shear bond strength (SBS) test is the most commonly used method for evaluating resin bond strength of zirconia, but SBS results vary among different studies even when evaluating the same bonding strategy. The purpose of this study was to promote standardization of the SBS test in evaluating zirconia ceramic bonding and to investigate factors that may affect the SBS value of a zirconia/resin cement/composite resin bonding specimen. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The zirconia/resin cement/composite resin bonding specimens were used to simulate loading with a shear force by the three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) modeling, in which stress distribution under uniform/non-uniform load, and different resin cement thickness and different elastic modulus of resin composite were analyzed. In vitro SBS test was also performed to validate the results of 3D FE analysis. RESULTS. The loading flat width was an important affecting factor. 3D FE analysis also showed that differences in resin cement layer thickness and resin composite would lead to the variations of stress accumulation area. The SBS test result showed that the load for preparing a SBS specimen is negatively correlated with the resin cement thickness and positively correlated with SBS values. CONCLUSION. When preparing a SBS specimen for evaluating bond performance, the load flat width, the load applied during cementation, and the different composite resins used affect the SBS results and therefore should be standardized.
In this paper, a finite element method is applied to the numerical calculation of the harbor calmness. The mild stop equation as the basic equation is used. The key of this model is that the bottom friction and boundary absorption are imposed. A numerical result is presented and compared with the results obtained from the other numerical analysis. These results are in very well agreement. This method calculating the calmness can be broadly utilized making the new design of harbor and fishing port in the future.
A 3D solid element mesh generation algorithm was newly developed. 3D surface points of global rectangular coordinates were supplied by a 3D laser scanner. The algorithm is strait forward and simple but it generates hexahedral solid elements. Then, the surface rectangular elements were generated from the solid elements. The key of the algorithm is elimination of unnecessary elements and 3D boundary surface fitting using given 3D surface point data.

This paper describes a new basic element which shows a synaptic operation for neural logic applications and shows function feasibility. A key device for the logic operation is the insulated-gate pn-junction device on SOI substrates. The basic element allows an interface quite compatible to that of conventional CMOS circuits and vMOS circuits.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze how a nursing student recognizes PBL with simulation education and its relationship to academic achievement. Methods: The study objects were the students in C college who learn through PBL using simulator for 15 weeks(September 2007 to December 2007). Learning element recognition was developed by Cho(2002) and three key evaluations(performance, self-evaluation, and colleague evaluation) were designed by professors. Results: Learning element recognition ranged from 2.37 to 4.83 with the average at 3.94. For Learning element recognition, students who preferred discussion score 4.15. This was statistically more significant than those who do not. Students who preferred presentations show significantly higher score in colleague evaluation. For Learning element recognition and academic achievement, self-evaluation and colleague evaluation showed relationship to PBL learning element. Conclusion: There was definitely a relationship with PBL learning element and academic achievement after learning the PBL with simulation education.
