An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of film cooling in the lab-scale dump-cooled liquid rocket engine using LOX and kerosene as propellants. The nozzle of the rocket engine was film cooled with water as coolant. A special film cooling adapter was fabricated to introduce the film-coolant into the thrust chamber. The flow rates of film coolant was approximately 15~19 percent of the total propellant. The nozzle heat flux was determined from the measured temperature rise and flow rate of the coolant(water). Large reductions in the nozzle heat flux was resulted when film cooling adapter located directly upstream of the nozzle.
The dilution of crankcase oil with unburned portions of the fuel during operating is one source of the oil contaminations which will reduce engine life.It has been learned that major causes of oil dilution may be the result of using impure fuels which were mixed with water, dust, and some others, but very little was known about this. This study was conducted to develop a more intimate understanding about oil dilution of the farm kerosene engine while using impure fuel mixed with expecially diesel. Fuels being used in this study were 9 kinds of mixed fuels, kerosene and diesel. Farm kerosenen engine of 10 P.S. was tested at no-load of 1000 and 2000 rpm., such as 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 11/10 loads for understanding about oil dilution of keresene engine. The result of this study are summarized as follows : 1. The amounts of oil dilution of the engine being tested was increased with increase in the applied loads and the contents of diesel in the mixed fuels when using fuels other than kerosenen and diesel, whereas at $D_100$ fuel the comount of oil dilution decreased in some cases. The lowest value was measured to be 20 cc/hr, at $K_90$ fuel of no-load condition, and the highest value to be 293cc/hr. at $K_{10}$ fuel of 4/4 load condition. 2. When the engine was operated at no-load condition, the amount of oil dilution at 100rpm. was much more than at 2000 rpm. 3. Because the fuel consumption and the oil dilution showed a similar tendency along the applied loads, the excessive fuel consumption of engines was supposed to be one of the important factors affecting oil dilution. 4. The temperature of crankcse oil was varied invesely with oil dilution, but they were not thought to be factors to determine each other variable. 5. The tested engine could be operated with high percentage of diesel mixed fuel from no-load condition to fully loaded condition, but it would be impossible to operate the engine for long hous continuously due to excessive speed fluctuation.

In this study heat transfer characteristics of kerosene at supercritical condition was predicted. And a sample heat transfer calculation was performed using this result. The prediction was done by assuming kerosene as a mixture of a number of pure substances, and combining the thermodynamic properties of them, using NIST SUPERTRAPP. A regeneratively cooled supersonic combustor will be desinged using the resultant thermophysical property data of supercritical kerosene. Comparing with the combustion test results of the regenerative cooling combustor, the predicted thermophysical property data will be verified.

A system design has been conducted of the liquid rocket engine for Korean launch vehicle (KSLV-II, Korea Space Launch Vehicle II). The present turbopump-fed liquid rocket engine of vacuum thrust 76 ton and vacuum specific impulse 297 sec adopts gas generator cycle. The combustion pressure of the regeneratively cooled combustor is 60 bar. The propellant is LOx/kerosene. The engine is started by pyrostarter and the combustor is ignited by TEA (TriEthylAluminium). The engine system performance and the subsystems performance requirements are given through energy balance analysis. The combustion pressure, specific impulse and the engine mass are analyzed to be reasonable comparing with the published data. The startup analysis method which will be used in the future has been validated against the turbopump-gas generator coupled test. The tuning method for performance variation of the engine which is not actively controled has been prepared by mode analysis and performance deviation analysis.

The combustion performance tests of a 30 tonf-class full-scale combustion chamber performed with kerosene as a coolant were described. The combustion chamber has chamber pressure of 53bara and propellant flow mass rate of 90kg/s. Since it was first firing test for 30tonf-class combustion chamber using kerosene cooling, kerosene coolant mass flow rate of 32kg/s which correspond to 120% of design mass flow rate were performed. Then, the firing test with kerosene mass flow rate of 25kg/s were successfully performed. The test results are described and the results showed that the kerosene cooling performance of this combustion chamber is sufficient and the firing test with regenerative cooling is feasible.

Kerosene(Jet A-1), one of the propellants for each stage's engine of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II), functions as coolant at the same time as it flows inside the cooling jacket of the combustion chambers and is injected through the film cooling holes. A physical surrogate mixture model to reproduce the thermophysical characteristics of Jet A-1 has been selected and the thermodynamic/transport properties of the model fuel under high pressure including supercritical conditions have been estimated using SUPERTRAPP(NIST SRD4). Comparisons with the measured properties suggest that proposed database can be used to extract properties of Jet A-1 for conjugate heat transfer analysis of liquid propellant rocket engine thrust chambers. Predicted combustion/cooling performance of regeneratively cooled thrust chambers shall be validated through comparisons with upcoming firing test results.

As part of preliminary study for development of 1,200 N-class bipropellant rocket engine with the concentrated hydrogen peroxide, bipropellant engine elements were designed and experimentally tested. The catalysts of $MnO_2$ and $MnO_2$ added Pb as an additive were compared to achieve high decomposition performance and the catalytic reactor with $MnO_2$ added Pb was designed and its decomposition efficiency of 97.2% was achieved. The autoignition tests of kerosene by decomposed hydrogen peroxide were carried out under various equivalence ratios to ignite without additional ignition sources. Autoignition were achieved in all experimental conditions and $C^*$ efficiencies at each condition were at or above 90%. From the measured thrust results, the highest value was 830 N which is in corresponds with 1,035 N at vacuum level assuming $C^*$ efficiency equals $I_{sp}$ efficiency.

An experimental study on design of a catalytic ignitor was performed to use an ignition source for a small bi-propellant liquid rocket engine which use hydrogen peroxide and kerosene as propellants. In the catalytic ignitor, hot gas of hydrogen peroxide which was decomposed by a catalyst induced autoignition of kerosene. Mass flow rate and O/F ratio for the ignitor were calculated by CEA code. A combustion chamber which had a quartz window and thermocouples was manufactured to determine whether the ignition is successful. Ignition performance was investigated according to exit area of fixed rings and mixture ratio. Results showed that reliable ignition performance was achieved at non-choking exit area of fixed ring and O/F ratio of 6~8.

Exothermic and ignition characteristic of igniter is very important factor in engine performance. Since the igniter performance is effected by Hydrogen Peroxide decomposition rate, we have to test the preliminary catalyst performance test. In this report, after making igniter using hydrogen peroxide/kerosene, a thermal characteristic were examined by comparing hydrogen peroxide mass and catalyst mass. And then we study ignition characteristic of the affects of O/F ratio using the previous data.
