Assessment of Bandsharing Values in RAPD-PCR Analysis of Dwarf Cattle of Kerala

  • Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) analysis of 56 animals of four different genetic groups of dwarf cattle in Kerala was done as a single step analysis. Bandsharing (BS) values were calculated for animals of each group and between groups as an analytical tool to find out genetic variation among animals. The different factors affecting BS values were estimated using Harvey''s Least squares analysis. The effects of genetic group, Guanine-cytosine (GC) content of primer and gel on BS values were found significant. Bandsharing values of Kasargode-Highrange dwarf animals were significantly different from Vechur, Vatakara and their combinations. The Vechur, Vatakara and Vechur-Vatakara combinations were found to be more uniform (high BS value) compared with other combinations. The bandsharing value was lowest with primers of GC content 90% and highest with 80% GC content. The effect of gel on BS value points to the need of adjustments of gel factor for calculation of BS values.

Predictive Distribution Modelling of Calamus andamanicus Kurz, an Endemic Rattan from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

  • Calamus andamanicus Kurz is one of the commercially important solitary rattans endemic to Andaman and Nicobar islands. The habitat suitability modeling program, MaxEnt, was used to predict the potential ecological niches of this species, based on bioclimatic variables. The study revealed high potential distribution of C. andamanicus across both Andaman and Nicobar islands. Of the 33 spatially unique points, 21 points were recorded from South and North Andamans and 12 from Great Nicobar Islands. The islands like Little Andaman, North Sentinel, Little Nicobar, Tllangchong, Teressa were also predicted positive even though this rattan is not recorded from these islands. Mean diurnal range, higher precipitation in the wettest month of the year, annual precipitation and precipitation in the driest month are the main predictors of this species distribution.

  • 인도의 남서단에 위치하고 있는 케랄라는 낮은 경제수준에도 불구하고 높은 사회발전현상을 보이는 흥미로운 지역으로 많은 학자들의 관심을 받아왔다. 이러한 독특한 발전현상은 케랄라발전모델이라 불려왔으며 이를 설명하기 위해 지역의 역사 및 문화적 배경, 사회주의정당의 사회복지정책 등 다방면의 접근법이 이뤄져왔다. 그중에서도 교육이 케랄라의 사회발전에 중요한 영향을 미쳤다는데 대다수의 학자들이 동의하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 케랄라의 교육이 어떻게 이뤄져 왔으며, 지역주민들에게 어떠한 영향을 미쳤으며, 사회발전이 어떻게 교육으로부터 시작되어 왔는가에 대해 논의는 거의 이뤄지지 않았다. 케랄라의 교육은 기존의 교육의 외재적 가치, 즉 인간자본창출중심의 경제적 성장을 우선시 하는 개발패러다임의 관점으로는 설명하기 어렵다. 따라서 본 연구는 케랄라의 지역사회발전에 미친 교육의 의미와 가치를 Amartya Sen의 토대역량접근(Capability Approach)에 근거하여 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 케랄라의 교육정책의 특징을 특히 케랄라의 교육개발사례에서 자주 소개되고 있는 소외계층을 위한 교육기회의 확대를 중심으로 살펴보고 이들의 성장과 사회발전의 특징을 분석하고자 한다.

Caloglossa beccarii (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyta) from freshwater rivers in Kerala, India, a critical new record

  • Caloglossa species occurs in freshwater streams around Southest Asia. We report it from 2 different riverine sites in Kerala, India. Tetrasporangiate plants were observed in field collections from the Periyar River and Chalakkudy River. The Chalakkudy isolate did not reproduce in culture but the Periyar isolate developed abundant tetrasporangial sori in culture. Many spores were discharged and most were abortive, but some germinated normally, sporelings forming male gametophytes with numerous spermatangial sori and females with many procarps, viable carposporophytes and some nonfunctional (no carpospores) pseudocystocarps. Some carpospores germinated forming new tetrasporophytes. Molecular evidence (28S rDNA and rbcL) placed the Indian specimens close to C. beccarii and C. fluviatilis. Considering the freshwater habitat and morphology of vegetative thalli (blade shape, rhizoid arrangement, and number of rhizoid filament per cell), the Indian specimens should be assigned to C. beccarii.

  • Very recently, Mubeen, et al. [6] have obtained fifteen contiguous function relations for k-hypergeometric functions with one parameter by the same technique developed by Gauss. The aim of this paper is to obtain seventy-two new and interesting contiguous function relations for k-hypergeometric functions with two parameters. Obviously, for $k{\rightarrow}1$ we recover the results obtained by Cho, et al. [2] and Rakha, et al. [8].

  • In this paper, some new fixed point theorems for condensing mappings are established based on a well known result of Petryshyn. We use several Leray-Schauder type conditions to prove new fixed point results. We also obtain generalizations of Altman's theorem and Petryshyn's theorem as well.

  • The objective of this paper is to present 87 recurrence relations for the Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{({\alpha},{\beta})}(x)$. The results presented here most of which are presumably new are obtained with the help of Gauss's fifteen contiguous function relations and some other identities recently recorded in the literature.

On Estimating the Parameters of an Extended Form of Logarithmic Series Distribution

  • We consider an extended version of a logarithmic series distribution and discuss the estimation of its parameters by the method of moments and the method of maximum likelihood. Test procedures are suggested to test the significance of the additional parameter of this distribution and all procedures are illustrated with the help of real life data sets. In addition, a simulation study is conducted to assess the performance of the estimators.
