  • This paper describes the results of a survey aimed at characterizing smallholder pig production systems in northern Lao PDR. A total of 341 households from five Northern provinces were interviewed in the survey. Village meetings and individual interviews, using a semi-structured questionnaire, were used to collect information. Three main pig rearing systems, free-scavenging, semi-scavenging and confinement (enclosures and pens), were found in the survey areas. These systems were practiced differently by smallholders depending on the level of intensity of crop production, ethnicity and purpose of keeping pigs. The confinement system was mainly practiced by Lao-Tai and Tibeto-Burman groups, who mainly bought piglets and fattened these pigs for sale. In contrast, the Mon-Khmer and Hmong-Mien reared pigs in free-scavenging and semi-scavenging systems, and usually keep sows for piglet production. The main factors that affected the changes in rearing systems were found to be level of intensity of crop production, local regulations and outbreaks of disease. The main constraints found in smallholder systems were outbreaks of disease, high mortality of piglets and the slow growth rate of fattening pigs.

  • The KOSHA codes H-31 and H-30 provide general guidelines to establish a prevention program for work-related musculoskeletal disorders(WMSD). Understanding of the components and practitioner needs for a WMSD prevention program is necessary for effective revision and implementation of the KOSHA codes. The present study established a comprehensive structure for a WMSD prevention program and surveyed practitioner needs for the KOSHA codes. The comprehensive prevention program structure, consisting of 7 parts(organization, education, risk management, medical management, program evaluation, and record keeping) and 90 items, was constructed by analyzing WMSD prevention guidelines published by various government agencies such as KOSHA, OSHA and NIOSH. Next, 20 practitioners, from four industry sectors(auto manufacturing, auto part manufacturing, shipbuilding, and machinery), working in a safety and health department or labor union, were interviewed to collect opinions for the KOSHA codes in terms of relevance, government support, and additional information needed. Guidelines of the KOSHA codes requiring modifications and government supports were identified, which can be used to revise the KOSHA codes and to establish a government policy to promote the implementation of the KOSHA codes. Lastly, the survey revealed that integrated, customized, quantitative, and case information for WMSD prevention is additionally needed, which can be used as design guidelines for a WMSD prevention program manual for practitioners.

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate the perception of importance about HACCP guidelines of dietitians. A questionnaire was developed to achieve research objectives and sent to random samples of 500 dietitians by a mail ; 418(84%) responses were analyzed. The respondents used three-point-scale to rate their perception of importance about HACCP from 1-"will be necessary" to 3-"very important". All statistical analyses were conducted using SAS package(version 8.12) for Windows. Means and standard deviations were computed for all variables. One-way analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple range test were used to assess differences in the perception of importance about HACCP guidelines among business and industry, health care and school foodservice managers. The study results were summarized as follows. Dietitians especially had lower perception of importance on the contents of Critical Control Points(CCPs), such as; adequate thawing methods and keeping records(1.95) and correct cleaning and sterilizing for raw vegetables and fruits(1.93). The rates of perception of importance about HACCP guidelines were significantly different from 19 of the 37 contents among business and industry, health care and school foodservice(p<.05 or p<.01 or p<.001). Generally, the item related to purchasing and inspection management had the highest perception level score and the item related to pre-preparation management had the lowest perception level score in foodservice production process(p<.001). Results indicate that there is a need for increased education of dietitians about HACCP principles and appropriate practices.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the mediating effect of informatization level between characteristics of introducing information system and organizational performance in hospital settings, and to provide suggestions to improve the performance level of strategic information system of hospitals. In order to achieve study purpose, a causal path model was developed and empirically tested. Data were collected from 746 managers of 92 hospitals keeping information system in Busan, Ulsan and Kyungnam Province using self-administered structured questionnaire. Major results of this study were as follows; The results of the path analysis showed that organizational characteristics variables except informatization strength within health industry had significant effects on informatization level, and had indirect effects on organizational performance mediated by informatization level. On the other hand, informatization level, especially revelation capability among informatization level variables, was found to have significant direct effect on organizational performance. These results of empirical test imply that informatization level variables are both important affecting factors on organizational performance and mediating factors between organizational characteristics and organizational performance. Therefore, in order to increase organizational performance, measures improving informatization level should be developed and carried out continuously. And, especially, focusing on building and strengthening revelation capability is crucial to those efforts.

  • The traditional farming method has very long history in the process of agricultural development. The application of chemical fertilizers production became most popular to increase quantities of agricultural production. The United States of America is one of largest countries in the world. There are at present 50 States and farming conditions are very different from each individual States. There are increasing trend of agricultural production by applying chemical fertilizers as well as sprays during last 50 years(1940-90). The disadvantages of conventional farming method were to destroy nature and human life. There were some other kinds of disadvantages such as nitriated contamination in drinking water both for human being and animals. The alternative farming method is one of new farming method reducing and/of non-application of chemical fertilizers and sprays in agricultural production. There is less economic research on alternative farming system about $5.444 economic advatages in organic farms comparing commercial farms at the same area. There are advantage of higher unit price level in orgnic products, decreasing chemical costs as well as effect of crop combinations. It is certainly necessary to have more empirical research on economic and management of alternative farming method in the United States of America. However, if there is economic advantage in alternative farming methods, the future development possibility of alternative farming method can be very bright in vear future. There might be more advantages such as soil conservation, better quality of agricultural products, better health conditions of farmer's and consumer's as well as keeping healthy environment of rural and urban areas.

  • As the market of express delivery services expands rapidly, delivery service companies are exposed to severe competition. As a result of the surplus of delivery companies, they are struggling with remaining competitive at a reasonable price with appropriate level of customer satisfaction. To cope with competition pressures, a strategic alliance is suggested as an effective solution to the challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in express delivery services. Therefore, this study suggests a combined optimization and simulation approach to the reconfiguration of an express delivery service network for strategic alliance with respect to strategy partnership of closing/keeping service centers among companies involved and adjustments of their cutoff times. An illustrative numerical example is presented to demonstrate the practicality and efficiency of the approach.

  • Medical devices separated by a committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC TC (Technical Committee) 62 medical electrical equipment being promoted by the International standards. Actually, a lot of standards were existed, but many national and international standards for medical devices were lacking in practical standards that can be applied to their development. Most international standards were focused in electrical and mechanical safety of medical devices. Therefore, there were few practical standards which contain essential performance evaluation. Although medical device regulations do not enforce a fixed lifecycle model, activities are presented in a sequential manner, thus hinting at a waterfall process. Meanwhile, for a decade or more, software teams have benefitted from agile development methods. Several medical device manufacturers have adopted agile practices while keeping development in compliance with regulations, but conflicts arise and decisions have to be taken in favor of agility or formality. However, if there are new practical standards of medical devices, it must be possible to promote the medical devices industry in their nation. To do this, there is a need to develop a new standard could apply to the international market through the analysis of the medical device related technology. Consequently, new standards such as NP (New proposal) or NWIP (New Work Item Proposal) should be developed through international standardization of medical device technology.
