  • A main oxidizer shut-off valve (MOV) controls the supply of cryogenic liquid oxygen to the combustion chamber of liquid rocket engines by on/off operations. The main subjects to be introduced are not only the valve transient response during valve on/off procedures but also the characteristics of pneumatic and seat/poppet parts as core technologies in the development of the MOV, which is expected to be adopted for the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II. It is shown that the analytical prediction of the transient valve travel is in good agreement with experimental results. Friction and elastic forces on the valve moving part are quantitatively evaluated by structural analysis.

  • KARI has been conducting R&D for independent development of KSLV-II since 2010. Vehicle holding device is a device for vertically standing SLV on the launch pad of launch complex and fixing the lower part of vehicle in order to firmly fix vehicle so that SLV does not fall from an external load such as a wind load. When thrust generated after the 1st stage engine ignition of SLV must exceed the takeoff weight of vehicle, and holding device should be quickly released so that it does not interfere with takeoff of vehicle like other ground equipment at the beginning of the launch. Pyro-valve is one of the key components constituting VHD, and it should have high reliability and quick response characteristics with similar functional parts applied to launch vehicle separation device and satellite separation device. Through this paper, I intend to broaden the overall understanding of the development process of pyro-valve for VHD and KSLV-II.

  • Work breakdown structure is a central element in project management and systems engineering. Composing a quality work breakdown structure is essential for the success of any project. In this paper, extensive use of work breakdown structure during phase one of KSLV-II launch vehicle development program is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of applying WBS-centric program and systems engineering management to the project are reviewed.

  • The research and development status of combustion chamber of liquid rocjet engine for Korea Space Launch Vehicle(KSLV-II) are briefly described. The cold and hot firing tests of uni-element injector, the performance/heat flux measurement/hot firing tests of subscale combustion chamber and the performance/stability rating/regenerative cooling/hot fire tests of 30ton-class combustion chamber were successfully performed. Based on these results, the research and development of combustion chamber for 75ton-class liquid rocket engine are underway.

  • In this paper, mathematical models of a simulation code are presented. The simulation code was developed for the startup analysis of an open cycle liquid rocket engine (LRE). Most of the components comprising an LRE, including the priming process in the propellant feeding line, were considered. A startup simulation of a 75-tonf LRE, which was used for the KSLV-II test launch vehicle (TLV), was performed. The simulation results showed good agreement with the engine acceptance test results, thus proving the validity of the startup simulation code.

  • Engine cool down process is necessary for the liquid rocket engines using cryogenic propellants in order to meet the requirement of engine inlet temperature. This paper evaluates the cool down characteristics of oxidizer supply pipeline and engine in prechill process prior to the engine firing tests, and calculate the quantity of liquid oxygen consumption.

  • STEP Cube Lab-II (Cube Laboratory for Space Technology Experimental Project-II) is a 6U Cube satellite equipped with optical and infrared cameras for monitoring Mt. Paektu volcanic eruption signs and earth observation in the Korean peninsula. To guarantee successful mission operation of the cube satellite in orbit, thermal design is essential for the electronic equipment, and must be kept within the allowable temperature range during the mission period. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the predictable orbital thermal environment. The STEP Cube Lab-II is launched through the KSLV-II, however, the operation orbit has not been determined due to the unknown launch time. In this study, we performed a thermal analysis of the satellite and investigated the heat flux according to launch time to analyze the worst orbital conditions that could occur.
