  • In the present research, NASA LRB plume radiation models are reconstructed with Thermal Desktop software, where the radiation to vehicle base environment can be calculated. The calculation shows the similar radiation heat compared to NASA prediction. Based on LRB plume radiation model, a KSLV-II thermal radiation model is proposed.

• The ship-borne mobile down range telemetry antenna system having 4.6 m reflector antenna and 3-axis mounting structure at S-band requires the precise pointing accuracy at sea for the launch mission. Using the LEO satellites tracking, a method to determine and verify the antenna pointing and tracking performance, and to find the pointing bias which dominantly contributes to the pointing inaccuracy, is presented. Based upon the tests conducted on the Jeju sea and Pacific sea, the pointing bias is determined and its origin is also identified as the drift of the heading angle of the gyrocompass. The applied systematic correction taking into account the pointing bias, and the achieved improvement of the pointing accuracy are shown. Thanks to the correction, it is presented that this antenna tracked the launcher(KSLV-I) stably within the required pointing accuracy in the following KSLV-I third launch.

  • This paper examines a survey on recent research regarding health monitoring and management for liquid rocket engines (LRE). For this, we investigated precedent techniques applied to LRE development. Particularly, we focused on open-cycle LRE to apply to KSLV-II (Korea Space Launch Vehicle II). Through this study, we subdivided health monitoring algorithms and analyzed fault detection and diagnosis algorithm developed in China, since China researched open-cycle LRE that have the same cycle as KSLV-II rocket engines. We discuss significant points to be considered regarding development of the KSLV-II.

  • For a GPS antenna to normally receive GPS satellite signals during full flight mission of a satellite launch vehicle, it should be installed on skin of the vehicle. The surface of a launch vehicle is drastically heated up due to aerodynamic heating effect during flight, so that the GPS antenna mounted on surface of the launch vehicle is directly exposed to extremely hot temperature environment. Hot temperature test specification of the GPS antenna, therefore, is severer than inner components. This paper describes that procedures and results of performance analysis of the GPS antenna for KSLV-I under hot temperature environment. The GPS antenna was not deformed physically and inner LNA(Low Noise Amplifier) operated normally without performance degradation.

  • The KSLV-II project with high difficulties technically requires thorough technical management during long-term life cycle more than 10 years for launching into space. The TRL is a quantitative indicator developed by NASA widely used all over the world to measure technology maturity of a system development objectively and consistently. The TRL is also used to make sure technology level and to establish a future direction in the KSLV-II project. The TRL has advantage enable to identify a technology level through quantitative indicators. However, it takes a lot of efforts such as trials and errors, time and cost to apply it to the project considering the project environments, and stakeholder needs. These include not only to establish TRL management plan from ideal, conceptual and abstractive standards/guidelines such as NASA's, but also to construct TRL management environment enable to apply and manage harmoniously. In the KSLV-II project, it is required to figure out current technology level and technology development trend in the future, to access conveniently, to share related data in real time, and to update periodically for the comprehensive TRL management. From the reason above, the TRL management environment was built by using the systems engineering tool already has been used for other system management data such as requirements in the project. It also could be accomplished a practical management basis of systems engineering from the traceability among system management data including TRL. In this paper, case study results are introduced to manage the TRL for the space launch vehicle using the systems engineering tool in the KSLV-II project.

  • In this paper the development directions of the next generation launch vehicle program following KSLV-II has been discussed, which are to be executed after year 2020 according to the Medium and Long Term Plan for National Space Development. Also, several areas of technology advancement have been identified for the successful development of the LVs. The next generation LV must aim for not only the high performance but also for low cost as well as high reliability in order to compete against global commercial launch service providers. To this end, the next generation LVs program shall capitalize on many anticipated accomplishments of the KSLV-II program such as the 75 ton class LOX/kerosene rocket engine.
