3차원 MT 모델링을 통한 한반도 및 주변의 GDS(Geomagnetic Depth Sounding) 자료 해석 (Interpretation on GDS(Geomagnetic Depth Sounding) data in and around Korean peninsula using 3-D MT modeling)

  • 한반도의 심부 전기구조를 조사하기 위해서 극심부 전자탐사 중 하나인 지자기 수직탐사(GDS; Geomagnetic Depth Sounding)를 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 한반도 동남부에서 추가적으로 획득된 5개의 GDS 탐사 자료와 기존의 12개 측점의 탐사 자료를 통합하여 해석하였다. 또한 한반도 및 주변 해양의 영향을 정량적으로 평가하기 위하여 3차원 MT 모델링이 수행되었다. 관측된 실수 유도 지시자는 주변 해양의 영향만으로 설명되지 않았으며, 이 차이를 설명할 수 있는 2개의 전도성 구조를 제시하였다. 첫 번째는 Quiling-Dabie-sulu 대륙 충돌대의 연장성이라 생각되는 임진강 벨트이며, YIN과 ICHN에서 그 영향을 명확히 확인할 수 있었다. 두 번째는 한반도 남해안과 큐슈 섬 사이에 존재할 것으로 추정되는 맨틀 용승에 의한 고전도성층(HCL; Highly Conductive Layer)로서, 주로 한반도 동남부에 위치하는 KZU, KMT101, 107에서 그 존재를 확인할 수 있었다.

2000년대 초반 우리나라 장마기간 강수량의 십년 변화 특성 (Decadal Change in Rainfall During the Changma Period in Early-2000s)

  • The decadal change in rainfall for Changma period over the South Korea in early-2000s is detected in this study. The Changma rainfall in P1 (1992~2002) decade is remarkably less than in P2 (2003~2013) decade. The much rainfall in P2 decade is associated with the increase of rainy day frequency during Changma period, including the frequent occurrences of rainy day with a intensity of 30 mm/day or more in P2 decade. This decadal change in the Changma rainfall is due to the decadal change of atmospheric circulation around the Korean Peninsula which affects the intensity and location of Changma rainfall. During P2 decade, the anomalous anti-cyclone over the south of the Korean Peninsula, which represents the expansion of the North Pacific high with warm and wet air mass toward East Asia, is stronger than in P1 decade. In addition, the upper level zonal wind and meridional gradient of low-level equivalent potential temperature in P2 decade is relatively strengthened over the northern part of the Korean Peninsula than in P1 decade, which corresponds with the intensification of meridional gradient between air mass related to the East Asian summer monsoon nearby the Korean Peninsula in P2 decade. The enhanced meridional gradient of atir mass during P2 decade is favorable condition for the intensification of Changma rainfall band and more Changma rainfall. The atmospheric conditions related to enhanced Changma rainfall during P2 decade is likely to be influenced by the teleconnection linked to the suppressed convection anomaly over the southern part of China and South China Sea in P2 decade.

A Study on the Provenance of an Opacifying Agent(PbSnO3) in Yellow and Green Glass Beads Excavated from the Korean Peninsula

  • The yellow crystalline material present in yellow and green glass beads excavated from sites in the Baekje region of Korea was previously analyzed through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, revealing that the yellow crystalline material was $PbSnO_3$. This material is a pigment that is rarely seen in the Korean peninsula. Furthermore, some studies have been published on the provenance of lead in this material, which revealed no relationship to Korea, China, or Japan. In this study, we collected all accessible results of analyses on the lead isotope ratio of yellow and green glass beads excavated from the Korean peninsula, specifically from 7 sites in the Baekje region(located in the vicinity of Seoul, Wanju, Hwaseong, Osan, Gongju, Buyeo, and Iksan) and 2 sites in the Silla region(located in the vicinity of Gyeongju and Changnyeong). We subsequently investigated the lead provenance of the opacifying agents in the glass beads through comparison with the current extent of the galena data accumulated for the East Asian region, including Korea, China, and Japan, and for Thailand(Kanchanaburi Province), Southeast Asia. Our analysis determined that the lead provenance of the glass beads excavated from the Korean peninsula was Thailand(Kanchanaburi Province). Beyond our results, further studies should seek to determine the production sites of the glass beads. Obtaining and comparing the scientific analyses of glass beads from India and Southeast Asia would enable research on the glass beads trade through the maritime silk road.

엘니뇨-남방진동, 인도양 쌍극자 모드, 두 현상의 관련성, 그리고 한반도 기후에 대한 영향 (El Niño-Southern Oscillation, Indian Ocean Dipole Mode, a Relationship between the Two Phenomena, and Their Impact on the Climate over the Korean Peninsula)

  • 본 연구에서는 엘니뇨현상과 인도양 쌍극자 모드(Indian Ocean Dipole, IOD) 현상의 상호 관련성과, 우리나라 기온, 강수량에 대한 두 현상의 영향을 분석하였다. 1954년부터 2004년까지 51년간 NINO 3 지수, IOD지수, 그리고 전국 11개 지점 지역평균한 월별 평균기온과 강수량 자료를 사용하였다. 엘니뇨현상과 IOD현상은 봄과 가을에는 동시 상관관계가 존재한다. 인도양에서 해수면온도 분포는 엘니뇨 해에는 남북진동이, IOD 해에는 동서진동 형태가 뚜렷하였다. 엘니뇨 해 우리나라에서는, 여름철에 냉하다우, 겨울철에 온난다우 경향이 뚜렷한 반면에, IOD 해에는 유의한 상관성을 찾을 수 없었다. 대기대순환에서도 엘니뇨 해에는 우리나라를 포함한 중위도에 통계적으로 신뢰할 만한 편차패턴이 나타나지만, IOD 해에는 그렇지 않았다.

미(美) 해군의 해양전략 발전과 우리의 과제 - 항모운용을 중심으로 - (The Development of US Navy's Maritime Strategy and the ROK's Tasks with a Focus on the Roles of Aircraft Carrier)

  • Neighboring powers in the Korean Peninsula have started to develop and operate aircraft carriers or equivalent forces to cope with rising North Korean nuclear and missile threats and also to show its national might. For example, the United States has added a aircraft carrier from the 3rd fleet to western pacific theater of operation, while Peoples Republic of China is undergoing operational test of Liaoning as well as preparing for christening of its 2nd aircraft carrier. Japan is flexing its muscle as well by deploying Izumo capable of operating F-35B to Southeast Asia to participate in multilateral exercises starting this year. It is a high time to know more about aircraft carriers or similar types in terms of maritime strategy and history. The U.S. has had by far the vast amount of experiences in utilizing aircraft carrier that it would be beneficial for us to examine U.S. perspectives and its application in the Korean Peninsula. It will provide us with insights to understand and predict what it would be like in times of crisis in the Korean Peninsula in the perspective of aircraft carrier's involvement. This paper intends to show some aspects of future conflicts in the Korean Peninsula and how the ROK Navy can best be ready for such situation. For research purpose, U.S. maritime strategy has been developed in stages ; establishment phase, WWI phase, WWII phase, Cold war phase, post Cold war phase. Each phase includes such factors as threats, strategic concept, applications, and ways to improve maritime strategy. Finally, the role of aircraft carrier based on past history as well as future conflict shines the importance to have power projection capabilities for the ROK Navy. The intrinsic nature of the navy in the world is to project power ashore just as history proved it.

위성자료를 이용한 2001-2010년 동안의 동아시아 지역 에어로졸 직접복사강제력 분석 (An Analysis of Aerosol Direct Radiative Forcing Using Satellite Data in East Asia During 2001-2010)

  • The shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing (SWARF) was analyzed using the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data in the East Asian region from 2001 to 2010. In the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula, located in the leeward side of China, significantly negative high SWARF at the top of atmosphere (TOA) occurs due to the long-range transport of anthropogenic (e.g. sulphate) and natural aerosols (e.g. mineral dust) from the East Asian continent. Conversely, eastern China has much higher levels of SWARF at the surface (SFC) due to anthropogenically emitted aerosol than in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula. Since the radiative forcing of aerosols in the atmosphere are different in type, aerosol types were classified into sea salt+sulphate, smoke, sulphate and dust by using satellite data. The analysis on the SWARF by the classified aerosol types indicated that sulphate occupies a predominant portion of the atmosphere in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula in the summer. In particular, the annual averages of the summer TOA SWARF increased in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula from 2001 to 2010.

관측소 부지증폭 특성을 고려한 후쿠오카 지진특성 연구 (Analysis of Fukuoka Earthquakes Characterisics considering site amplification)

  • 우리나라는 강진으로부터 관측된 자료의 부족으로 중약지진을 이용한 강진의 감쇠특성 유추 및 지진원 및 전달특성 변수에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 최근 발생한 일본 후쿠오카지진 자료를 이용하여 LM 역산법으로 역산을 수행하였다. 이때 부지증폭효과, 관측소의 조건 및 규모의 변수화에 따라 각각 역산을 수행한 결과 부지증폭효과를 고려한 경우 Bed Rock으로 판단되는 관측소만의 역산 결과값과 유사한 값을 확인하였다. ${\Delta}{\delta}$의 경우 부지증폭효과를 고려하지 않은 Case 1 및 Case 5에서 1108bar 및 185bar로 나타났으며 부지효과를 고려한 Case 3 및 Case 7에서는 147bar 및 146bar로 안정적인 값을 보이고 있다. 향후 보다 많은 연구 분석을 통한다면 보다 신뢰성 높은 결과값이 나타날 것으로 판단된다.

Numerical Case Study of Heavy Rainfall Occurred in the Central Korean Peninsula on July 26-28, 1996

  • The numerical simulation of heavy precipitation event occurred in the central Korean Peninsula on July 26-28, 1996 was performed using the fine mesh model. ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) developed by the CAPS (Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms). Usually, the heavy rainfalls occurred at late July in the Korean Peninsula were difficult to predict, and showed very strong rainfall intensity. As results, they caused a great loss of life and property. As it usual, this case was unsuccessful to predict the location of rain band and the precipitation intensity with the coarse-mesh model. The same case was, however, simulated well with fine-mesh storm-scale model, ARPS. Moisture band at 850 hPa appeared along the Changma Front in the area of China through central Korea passed Yellow Sea. Also the low-level jet at 700 hPa existed in the Yellow Sea through central Korea and they together offered favorable condition to induce heavy rainfall in that area. The convective activities developed to a meso-scale convective system were observed at near the Yangtze River and moved to the central Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, the intrusion of warm and moist air, origninated from typhoon, into the Asia Continent might result in heavy rainfall formation through redistribution of moisture and heat. In the vertical circulation, the heavy rainfall was formed between the upper- and low-level jets, especially, the entrance region of the upper-level jet above the exit the region of the low-level jet. The low level convergence, the upper level divergence and the strong vertical wind were organized to the very north of the low level jet and concentrated on tens to hundreds km horizontal distance. These result represent the upper- and low-level jets are one of the most important reasons on the formation of heavy precipitation.

MODIS 자료를 이용한 한반도 지면피복 분류 (Classification of Land Cover over the Korean Peninsula using MODIS Data)

  • To improve the performance of climate and numerical models, concerns on the land-atmosphere schemes are steadily increased in recent years. For the realistic calculation of land-atmosphere interaction, a land surface information of high quality is strongly required. In this study, a new land cover map over the Korean peninsula was developed using MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data. The seven phenological data set (maximum, minimum, amplitude, average, growing period, growing and shedding rate) derived from 15-day normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were used as a basic input data. The ISOData (Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis), a kind of unsupervised non-hierarchical clustering method, was applied to the seven phenological data set. After the clustering, assignment of land cover type to the each cluster was performed according to the phenological characteristics of each land cover defined by USGS (US. Geological Survey). Most of the Korean peninsula are occupied by deciduous broadleaf forest (46.5%), mixed forest (15.6%), and dryland crop (13%). Whereas, the dominant land cover types are very diverse in South-Korea: evergreen needleleaf forest (29.9%), mixed forest (26.6%), deciduous broadleaf forest (16.2%), irrigated crop (12.6%), and dryland crop (10.7%). The 38 in-situ observation data-base over South-Korea, Environment Geographic Information System and Google-earth are used in the validation of the new land cover map. In general, the new land cover map over the Korean peninsula seems to be better classified compared to the USGS land cover map, especially for the Savanna in the USGS land cover map.

한반도 및 인근해역의 지진특성 (Seismic characteristics of earthquakes in and around the Korean peninsula)

  • 지진자료를 분석해 지진기록으로부터 산업현장에서 발생하는 인공지진을 식별하여 정확한 지진 카타로그를 제공하는 것은 지진연구에서 가장 기초적인 과정이지만 또한 매우 중요한 과제이다. 특히 지진계에 기록된 지진자료 만으로 이를 식별하는 것은 매우 어려운 관계로 선진국에서는 수십 년 전부터 많은 연구가 수행되어 오고 있다. 현재 국제사회에서 발효를 앞두고 있는 CTBT 체제에서 인공발파와 자연 지진의 식별은 외교 정책적인 면에서 매우 심각한 국제문제를 야기 시킬수 있다. 본 연구에서는 지진파 - 공중음파 관축소의 자료를 종합 분석하여 지진과 인공발파를 식별하는 방법을 추천코자 한다. 최극 한반도 및 주변해역에서 발생한 지진들의 분포는 남쪽에서는 서산-포항을 잇는 N60-70$^{\circ}$W 방향으로 진앙이 집중되며, 북쪽에서는 주로 평안도와 황해도에 집중된다. 1936년 이후 한반도 및 인근해역에서 발생한 비교적 큰 지진들(규모 4.5 이상) 14개의 메카니즘(mechanism)은 주로 수평이동단층(strike-slip faulting) 형태로 이는 이 지역에 작용하는 주 응력은 압축력임을 나타낸다. 이는 한반도 및 인근해역에 작용하는 응력장이 동쪽에서 유라시아판(Eurasian Plate) 밑으로 침강하는 태평양판(Pacific Plate)의 영향뿐만 아니라 남서쪽에서 충돌하는 인도판(Indian Plate)의 영향도 작용하는 것으로 판단된다.
