An attempt to derive the surface temperature from the Korea Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT)-3A mid-wave infrared (MWIR) data acquired over the southern California on Nov. 14, 2015 has been made using the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN) radiative transfer model. Since after the successful launch on March 25, 2015, the KOMPSAT-3A spacecraft and its two payload instruments - the high-resolution multispectral optical sensor and the scanner infrared imaging system (SIIS) - continue to operate properly. SIIS uses the MWIR spectral band of 3.3-5.2 ㎛ for data acquisition. As input data for the realistic simulation of the KOMPSAT-3A SIIS imaging conditions in the MODTRAN model, we used the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) atmospheric profiles, the KOMPSAT-3Asensor response function, the solar and line-of-sight geometry, and the University of Wisconsin emissivity database. The land cover type of the study area includes water, sand, and agricultural (vegetated) land located in the southern California. Results of surface temperature showed the reasonable geographical pattern over water, sand, and agricultural land. It is however worthwhile to note that the surface temperature pattern does not resemble the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance counterpart. This is because MWIR TOA radiances consist of both shortwave (0.2-5 ㎛) and longwave (5-50 ㎛) components and the surface temperature depends solely upon the surface emitted radiance of longwave components. We found in our case that the shortwave surface reflection primarily causes the difference of geographical pattern between surface temperature and TOA radiance. Validation of the surface temperature for this study is practically difficult to perform due to the lack of ground truth data. We therefore made simple comparisons with two datasets over Salton Sea: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) field data and Salton Sea data. The current estimate differs with these datasets by 2.2 K and 1.4 K, respectively, though it seems not possible to quantify factors causing such differences.

Coordination of multiple UAVs is an essential technology for various applications in robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence. In general, it includes 1) waypoints assignment and 2) trajectory generation. In this paper, we propose a new method for this problem. First, we modify the concept of the standard visibility graph to greatly improve the optimality of the generated trajectories and reduce the computational complexity. Second, we propose an efficient stochastic approach using simulated annealing that assigns waypoints to each UAV from the constructed visibility graph. Third, we describe a method to detect collision between two UAVs. FinallY, we suggest an efficient method of controlling the velocity of UAVs using A* algorithm in order to avoid inter-UAV collision. We present simulation results from various environments that verify the effectiveness of our approach.
KOMPSAT-5 that will be launched at the end of 2008 has a SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) payload. Since the Calibration and Validation of a satellite SAR is different from a passive optical camera as KOMPSAT-2 MSC and KOMPSAT-3 payload, we have started from the basis of SAR system. Firstly, the general SAR Cal/Val parameters have been gathered and defined. Secondly, we have been choosing the Cal/Val parameters suitable to KOMPSAT-5. Thirdly, the methods of SAR Cal/Val with the parameters have been studied. Fourthly, the requirement of Cal/Val devices and Cal/Val site has been studied.

KOMPSAT-3A launched in 2015 provides Middle InfraRed(MIR) images with 3.3~5.2㎛. Though the satellite provide high resolution images for estimating bright temperature of ground objects, it is different from existing satellites developed for natural science purposes. An atmospheric compensation process is essential in order to estimate the surface brightness temperature from a single channel MIR image of KOMPSAT-3A. However, even after the atmospheric compensation process, there is a brightness temperature error due to various factors. In this paper, we analyzed the cause of the brightness temperature estimation error by tracking signal flow from camera physical characteristics to image processing. Also, we study on possibility of improvement of MIR brightness temperature bias error of KOMPSAT-3A using GEOKOMPSAT-2A. After bias compensation of a real nighttime image with a large bias error, it was confirmed that the surface brightness temperature of KOMPSAT-3A and GEOKOMPSAT-2A have correlation. We expect that the GEOKOMPSAT-2A images will be helpful to improve MIR brightness temperature bias error of KOMPSAT-3A.

This study refers to the derivation of simple crop yield prediction equation by using KOMPSAT-2 derived vegetation index. For a 1.25 ha small farm area located in the middle part of South Korea, the KOMPSAT-2 panchromatic and multi-spectral images of 31th August 2008, 17th November 2008, and 10th September 2009 were used. The field spectral reflectance during growing period for the 6 crops (rice, potato, corn, red pepper, garlic, and bean) were measured using ground spectroradiometer and the yield was investigated. Among the 6 vegetation indices (VI), the NDVI and ARVI between measured and image derived showed high relationship with the coefficient of determination of 0.85 and 0.95 respectively. Using the 3 years field data, the NDVI and ARVI regression curves were derived, and the yields were tried to compare with the maximum VIs value.

The objective of this study is to estimate the carbon sequestration in forest stands using KOMPSAT-2 imagery. For estimating the amount of carbon sequestration, the stand biomass of forest was estimated with the total weight, which was the sum of individual tree weight. Individual tree volumes could be estimated by the crown width extracted from KOMPSAT-2 imagery. In particular, the carbon conversion index and the ratio of the $CO_2$ molecular weight to the C atomic weight, reported in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guideline, was used to convert the stand biomass into the amount of carbon sequestration. Thereafter, the KOMPSAT-2 imagery was classified with the segment based classification (SBC) method in order to quantify carbon sequestration by tree species. This approach, estimating the amount of carbon sequestration for certain species in stand, can be available to extend plot-based carbon sequestration to stand-based carbon sequestration.
It is essential to convert the Digital Number (DN) measured from Earth observing satellites into the physical parameter of radiance when deriving the geophysical parameter such as surface temperature in the satellite data processing. The purpose of this study is to update the DN·Radiance equation established from lab measurements, using the KOMPSAT-3A mid-wave infrared data and the MODTRAN radiative transfer model. Results of this study show that the improved DN·Radiance equation allows us to produce the realistic values of radiance. We expect in the forthcoming study that the radiances calculated as such should be more quantitatively validated with the use of relevant in-situ measurements and a radiative transfer model.
Sea surface wind is one of the most fundamental variables for understanding diverse marine phenomena. Although scatterometers have produced global wind field data since the early 1990's, the data has been used limitedly in oceanic applications due to it slow spatial resolution, especially at coastal regions. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is capable to produce high resolution wind field data. KOMPSAT-5 is the first Korean satellite equipped with X-band SAR instrument and is able to retrieve the sea surface wind. This study presents the validation results of sea surface wind derived from the KOMPSAT-5 backscattering coefficient data for the first time. We collected 18 KOMPSAT-5 ES mode data to produce a matchup database collocated with buoy stations. In order to calculate the accurate wind speed, we preprocessed the SAR data, including land masking, speckle noise reduction, and ship detection, and converted the in-situ wind to 10-m neutral wind as reference wind data using Liu-Katsaros-Businger (LKB) model. The sea surface winds based on XMOD2 show root-mean-square errors of about $2.41-2.74m\;s^{-1}$ depending on backscattering coefficient conversion equations. In-depth analyses on the wind speed errors derived from KOMPSAT-5 backscattering coefficient data reveal the existence of diverse potential error factors such as image quality related to range ambiguity, discrete and discontinuous distribution of incidence angle, change in marine atmospheric environment, impacts on atmospheric gravity waves, ocean wave spectrum, and internal wave.
KOMPSAT-2 like other high-resolution satellites has the time and angle difference in the acquisition of the panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) images because the imaging systems have the offset of the charge coupled device combination in the focal plane. Due to the differences, high altitude and moving objects, such as clouds, have a different position between the PAN and MS images. Therefore, a mis-registration between the PAN and MS images occurs when a registration algorithm extracted matching points from these cloud objects. To overcome this problem, we proposed a new registration method. The main idea is to discard the matching points extracted from cloud boundaries by using an automatic thresholding technique and a classification technique on a distance disparity map of the matching points. The experimental result demonstrates the accuracy of the proposed method at ground region around cloud objects is higher than a general method which does not consider cloud objects. To evaluate the proposed method, we use KOMPSAT-2 cloudy images.
The AOPOD (Atmosphere Occultation and Precision Orbit Determination) system, the secondary payload of KOMPSAT (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite)-5 scheduled to be launched in 2010, shall provide GPS radio occultation data. In this paper, we simulated the GPS radio occultation characteristic of KOMPSAT-5 and retrieved electron density profiles using KROPS (KASI Radio Occultation Processing Software). The electron density retrieved from CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) GPS radio occultation data on June 20, 2004 was compared with IRI (International Reference Ionosphere) - 2001, PLP (Planar Langmuir Probe), and ionosonde measurements. When the result was compared with ionosonde measurements, the discrepancies were 5 km on the $F_2$ peak height ($hmF_2$) and $3{\times}10^{10}el/m^3$ on the electron density of the $F_2$ peak height ($NmF_2$). By comparing with the Laugmuir Probe measurements of CHAMP satellite (PLP), both agrees with $1.6{\times}10^{11}el/m^3$ at the height of 365.6 km.
