  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of enzymatic treatment on the characteristics of KOCC. Novozym 342 and Pulpzyme HC were used for this purpose. Enzymatic treatment greatly increased the freeness of KOCC and Novozym 342 was more effective. WRV was improved only when KOCC was treated with 0.1% Pulpzyme HC. Pulpzyme HC was more effective to improve the flexibility of fiber(conformability angle) than Novozym 342. Coarseness of fiber was decreased with the enzymatic treatment. Fines content greatly decreased with 0.01% addition of enzymes. Novozym 342 was more effective than Pulpzyme HC for this purpose. Apparent density, tensile index and tear index decreased with enzymatic treatment, but stiffness increased. Especially the decrease of apparent density, tensile index and tear index by the treatment with Novozym 342 was significant than those of Pulpzyme HC. Therefore Novozym 342 will be suitable for the removal of fines and for bulky sheet, otherwise Pulpzyme HC will be good.

  • Removal of fines from fiber furnish by fractionation improves drainage, but decreases fiber bonding in paper. Fines can be again classified by their size such as the fines that passed 150 and 400 mesh screen, respectively. A hypothesis of different properties between these two kinds of fines was tested. Four different furnishes (SwBKP, HwBKP, KOCC, and BCTMP) were refined in two levels, and all their furnish and handsheet properties were compared in respect of their fines. KOCC fines gave the slowest drainage and least contribution to breaking length while BCTMP fines the fastest drainage and the highest contribution to breaking length. Removal of the fines that passed 400 mesh screen gave high improvement in drainage and large decrease in breaking length. Only KOCC fines removal gave more positive results where there were large improvement in drainage but only small decrease in breaking length.

  • In the manufacture of corrugated box, the fibrous raw materials are mainly consisted of recycled papers, such as KOCC(Korean Old Corrugated Container), kraft sack, and AOCC(American Old Corrugated Container). Among these recycled waste paper, the proportion of KOCC is relatively higher than others in fibrous raw materials. Generally, KOCC shows some poor fiber properties and contains hazardous heavy metal sources. Therefore, it is to evaluate the property of recycled paper sources for eco-friendly corrugated box manufacture. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of 3 kinds of recycled fibers and their mixed stocks were analyzed. The environmental assessment was also evaluated by analyzing the 4 representative heavy metal contents and evaporation residues in waste papers. As the results, KOCC showed the poorest fiber qualities and had the highest heavy metal contents and evaporation residues among the recycled fibers. Finally, the mechanical strength properties were increased by decreasing KOCC proportion of mixed stock conditions. In addition, the heavy metal contents and evaporation residues were also decreased by increasing recycled AOCC and kraft sack proportion.

  • In this study, fiber mechanical pretreatment before refining was executed with the addition of papermaking addiditives to find synergistic effects on fiber property improvement. Three fiber furnishes (SwBKP, KOCC, and BCTMP), and five different additives (CMC, CPAM, PEO, NaOH, $Na_2O_2$) were used. It was confirmed again that fiber mechanical pretreatment using Hobart mixer was a special way to modify fiber properties, where fiber WRV (water retention value) increases without losing fiber length. For SwBKP, addition of small amount of CMC (0.2% OD basis), and for KOCC, PEO (0.2% OD basis) caused additional significant improvement of the fiber furnish properties, respectively. Other additives did not cause adverse effects on the mechanical pretreatment, or better. For BCTMP, NaOH addition followed by mechanical pretreatment caused more than 20% improvement in tensile and tear strength simultaneously, compared to the control. The yellowing caused by the treatment of NaOH on BCTMP could be minimized by using $Na_2O_2$ without losing the positive effect of NaOH.

  • Increasing consumer demand for recycle of most paper products is challenging manufacturers to use lower value raw materials while maintaining high quality. This study was carried out to investigate the composition of old corrugated containers (OCC) and to manufacture printing and writing papers of over 85% (ISO) brightness by ECF and TCF bleaching from OCC. Fiber length of American old corrugated container (AOCC) was longer than that of Korean old corrugated container (KOCC) in fiber length. The former was composed of unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) of about 80 percentage, the latter about 20 percentage. OCC is feasible for manufacturing of pulps i.e., AOCC is for printing and writing papers and KOCC is for whiteboards, in the aspects of brightness and mechanical properties on the other hand, the cost of manufacturing upgraded papers by OCC is high because of bleaching chemicals. Neverthless, considering various aspects, especially environment, there are many advantages in recycling. In case of the treated AOCC pulp, over 85% (ISO) brightness can be achieved through TCF or ECF bleaching step, while the treated KOCC pulp did not allow high brightness through TCF bleaching. The tensile index of the bleached KOCC pulp was lower than that of the bleached AOCC pulp, but the burst and tear index of KOCC was higher than that of AOCC.

  • The effects of polyelectrolytes and enzyme, alone and in combination, were investigated in OCC recycling system. Four types of the polyelectrolytes based on acrylamide, cationic and anionic monomers were applied to the enzyme-treated KOCC stock to improve the strength and drainage properties of testliner. The polyelectrolytes used in this work were designed in terms of molecular weight and charge density. The water conditions used for recycling were also varied. The results showed that the hydrolytic action of enzyme gave reduced surface area and amorphous region of fiber, and as a result, the cationic polymer was lost apparently its flocculating power due to the reduced bonding site of fiber surface. When the hardness and conductivity of water had been controlled to the conditins of OCC paper mill, the application of amphoteric polyelectrolyte to the enzyme-treated recycled stock was the most effective with respect to the strength and drainage properties of testliner.

  • The base paper of corrugated board is mainly produced from Korean old corrugated container (KOCC), and thus the recycling rate of KOCC is very high. However, there is a problem that the pulp quality is very low while the recycling rate of OCC is high. The fines content in KOCC, the main source of the corrugated board, amounts to nearly the half of the total stock, and its formation increases as recycling process repeats due to the hornification of fiber. There have been attempts to improve the drainage property of OCC by increasing the headbox concentration of the paper machine or by applying drainage-promoting polymer additives. However, these conventional methods have problems of weakened paper strength and lowered converting fitness caused by paper formation hindrance. The strength of linerboard could not be increased in case KOCC is used, because hornified OCC pulp can-not be sufficiently refined due to the lowered drainage property caused by fines formation. We studied about a new technique consisting of froth-flotation for fractionating pulp stock into a long fiber portion and fines fraction. This study will be developed in order to enhance the drainage and strength properties of a recycled OCC pulp by selective treatment of flocculant on fractionated OCC Fines.

  • For the manufacture of linerboard with 100% KOCC, we tried to increase the solid content of wet web by employing GCC (grounded calcium carbonate) in the fiber furnish to save drying energy. Three different diameters of GCC, namely, 5, 10, and $35{\mu}m$, were used. To complement the strength loss by the addition of GCC, cationic starch and refining treatment were tried. It was found that the addition of $10-35{\mu}m$ dia. GCC to KOCC for $180g/m^2$ basis weight sheets increased the solid content of the furnish about 1-1.5% with better bulk and drainage properties. The loss of strength properties were compensated by the application of cationic starch and/or refining process to the KOCC furnish. The dia. of GCC of $35{\mu}m$ was, however, too large to make smooth surface of the sample sheet. So, the optimization process was required before implementing the results to the mill by selecting proper diameter and shape of the calcium carbonate.

  • It is very important to utilize effectively fibrous waste paper in terms of cost savings, environmental effects, and governmental policies. The quality of final products and runnability of papermaking process are primarily affected by constitutions of fibrous raw materials. In specific, board grade paper depends directly on compositions of waste paper bales. At present, the raw materials of board grade paper are mainly derived from lots kinds of wastepaper. Some papermaking countries, like EU, USA and Japan have advanced classification and management systems of recycled fiber, but Korea has not yet organized systematically. In this study, evaluation of wastepaper bale compositions and their fiber properties were carried out for effective utilization of fibrous raw materials for board grade paper production. 3 kinds of wastepaper bales were classified to fibrous or non-fibrous materials. In case of fibrous materials, KOCC, kraft sack paper and white duplex board matters were main component in total weight basis, and in case of non-fibrous materials, vinyl, plastic and cloth matters were main component, in turns. 3 representative kinds of waste paper were disintegrated and classified, and then prepared to handsheet for evaluation of recycled fiber property. Consequently, fines and ash content of waste paper, isolated from KOCC and white duplex board were higher than that of kraft sack paper. pH values of all kinds of waste fibers were neutral or weak alkaline.
