  • The in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) for sustainable lunar surface and deep space explorations has recently gained attention. Also, research on the development of construction material preparation technology using lunar regolith is in progress. Microwave sintering technology for construction material preparation does not require a binder and is energy efficient. This study applies microwave sintering technology to KLS-1, a Korean lunar simulant. It is crucial to secure the homogeneity to produce a sintered specimen for construction material. Therefore, understanding the interactions between microwaves, cavities, and raw materials is required. Using a numerical model in terms of efficient assessment of several cases and establishment of equipment operating conditions is a very efficient approach. Therefore, this study also proposes and verifies a coupled electric-thermal numerical model through cross-validation and comparison with experimental results. The numerical model proposed in this study will be used to present an efficient method for producing construction material using microwave sintering technology.

  • Fatty acid composition and electrophoretic patterns of protein of Korean soybeans were studied, The protein content showed an inverse relation with the lipid content, The content of lipid types of total lipid was in the order of neutral lipid, glycolipid and phospholipid, Cultivar 102-B had higher content of neutral lipid but lower content of phospholipid compared with others. The main component of neutral lipid was triglyceride followed by sterol. The main fatty acids of total lipid were linoleic, oleic and palmitic acids, which comprised over 85% of total fatty acids. The main fatty acid of neutral lipid, glycolipid and phospholipid were linoleic acid. The polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic pattern of protein showed seven bands. The cultivar 102-B had the highest content of IIS globulin. Sodium-dodecyl sulfate PAG electrophoresis demonstrated that all soybeans had similar composition of subunit.

  • During soaking of 4 varieties of Korean soybeans in water at $4-98^{\circ}C$, an equilibrium state was reached after 3 hr at $60-98^{\circ}C$ but no equilibrium state was observed at $4-40^{\circ}C$ during soaking for 10 hrs. The moisture gain of soybeans held a linear relation with the square root of soaking time regardless of soaking temperatures, which indicated that the basic mechanism of water absorption was diffusion of water. The log time to reach a fixed moisture content showed a linear relation with the soaking temperature during soaking of soybeans at $4-60^{\circ}C$. The z-value decreased in proportions to the increase of hydration. The z-value to reach 50% hydration was the same in all soybeans.

  • Kleine-Levin syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of hypersomnia, hyperphagia, hypersexuality and delusion and hallucination with spontaneous recovery. A 17-year-old female suddenly showed hypersomnia, severe fatigue, and compulsive hyperphagia. She was diagnosed with suspected Kleine-Levin Syndrome. The precipitating factor was an upper respiratory tract infection that the patient had undergone 2 weeks prior. Past psychiatric history included somnambulism and ADHD; her symptoms of ADHD included attention deficit, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, and irritability. This was her third episode. Her hypersomnia was longer in duration but lower in frequency compared with usual KLS. Her low LF/HF ratio in heart rate variability measurement showed high parasympathetic nerve activity. A MMPI report showed some psychological problem. The patient was diagnosed of gastric fever by pattern identification. Her hypersomnia episode improved 6 weeks after onset. This is the first reported case of suspected Kleine-Levin Syndrome in the field of Oriental Medicine in Korea.

  • To acquire an industrially useful biocatalyst for the enzymatic synthesis and production of various D-amino acid aminotransferase (D-AAT) activity. The enzyme activity was found from 110 strains of isolated thermophiles revealing its wide occurrence in thermophiles. Enzyme activity and thermal stability of the D-AAT producers were compared. Finally we have selected four thermophiles as producers of potent biocatalysts for the D-amino acid production; two thermophiles, Bacillus sp. Lk-1 and LK-2, having higher specific activity and two thermophiles, B. stearothermophilus KL-01 and Bacillus sp. KLS-01, having higher thermal stability than the D-AAT producers. Taxonomic and physiological characteristics of the four isolated thermophiles were described herein.

  • The mechanism of interaction of two drugs viz., amoxicillin and cloxacillin with bovine serum albumin has been investigated using fluorescence absorption and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The quenching mechanism of fluorescence of bovine serum albumin by amoxicillin and cloxacillin was discussed. The binding sites number n and apparent binding constant Kwere measured by fluorescence quenching method. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from data at different temperatures were calculated. The distance r between donor (bovine serum albumin) and acceptor (amoxicillin and cloxacillin) was obtained according to Forster theory of non-radiative energy transfer. The effect of common ions on binding constant was also investigated. The results of synchronous fluorescence spectra, UV-vis absorption spectra and circular dichroism of BSA in presence of amoxicillin and cloxacillin show that the conformation of bovine serum albumin changed

  • Six different sequences types(A through E and H) and a subtype(Bl) of the small subunit ribosomal RNA(SSUrRNA) gene were found in bovine Theileria isolates from different areas of Korea and Japan. The sequences were aligned and three hypervariable regions were observed in the nucleotide position ranges 212~231, 261~270 and 632~690. Five of the Theileria isolates yielded sequence type A; these were the field isolates KCB, KCN, and KCJ, and the laboratory stock KLS, all from Korea, and a single isolate from Japan (JHS). This sequence type is identical to the SSUrRNA gene sequence listed for Theileria buffeli (GenBank Accession No. Z15106) from Marula, Kenya. The Korean field isolate KKB yielded only a single sequence type (B), but multiple sequence types were found in some isolates. For example, KCB and JHS isolates yielded both types A and B ; isolate KKW showed types B and H; isolate KCN showed types A, C, and D ; and isolate KCJ showed types A, B, E, and a subtype B1. Finding of the multiple sequences SSUrRNA gene sequences suggests that bovine Theileria isolates from both Korea and Japan may consist of mixed populations.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the regenerative capacity of reconstruction in the atrophied posterior maxilla by comparing bone graft procedures and alveolar distraction osteogenesis (ADO) techniques. We performed the autogenous iliac bone graft (AGB group, 5 specimens in 3 patients), and the combination (Mixed group, 3 specimens in 3 patients) of the autogenous and deproteinized bovine bone ($Bio-Oss^{(R)}$, Geistlich Co., Switzerland) as the ratio of 2:1 in the sinus floor elevation procedures. ADO procedures using $TRACK^{(R)}$ (KLS Martin Co., Germany) were also performed to augment vertical alveolar height in atrophied posterior maxilla (ADO group, 5 specimens in 4 patients). Newly generated bone tissues were obtained with the 2.0mm diameter trephine bur (3i Co., USA) during implant fixture installation after 5-7 months. Routine histolomorphological observation, immunodot blot assay for quantitative evaluation, and immunohistochemical staining with antibodies to MMP-1, -9, -10, TIMP-1, -2, and BMP-2, -4 were all carried out. Lamellar bone formation was well shown in all specimens and new bone formations of ADO group increased than those of other procedures. In immunohistochemical staining, the strong expression of BMP-2 was shown in all specimens, and immunodot blot assay showed that bone formation is accompanied by the good induction of factors associated with angiogenesis and appeared more increased amount of osteogenic and angiogenic factors in ADO group. ADO is the most effective technique for new bone formation compared to sinus floor elevation with autogenous or mixed bone graft in the atrophied posterior maxilla. In the quantitative immunodot blot assay, the regenerated bone after ADO showed more increased products of VEGF, BMP-2, PCNA and MMP-1 than those after the other procedures, and these findings were able to be confirmed by immunohistochemical stainings.

  • A rover is a planetary surface exploration device designed to move across the ground on a planet or a planetary-like body. Exploration rovers are increasingly becoming a vital part of the search for scientific evidence and discoveries on a planetary satellite of the Sun, such as the Moon or Mars. Reliable behavior and predictable locomotion of a rover is important. Understanding soil behavior and its interaction with rover wheels-the terramechanics-is of great importance in rover exploration performance. Up to now, many researchers have adopted Bekker's semiempirical model to predict rover wheelsoil interaction, which is based on the assumption that soil is deformable when a pressure is applied to it. Despite this basic assumption of the model, the pressure-sinkage relation is not fully understood, and it continues to present challenges for rover designers. This article presents a new pressure-sinkage model based on dimensional analysis (DA) and results of bevameter tests. DA was applied to the test results in order to propose a new pressure-sinkage model by reducing physical quantitative parameters. As part of the work, a new bevameter was designed and built so that it could be successfully used to obtain a proper pressure-sinkage relation of Korean Lunar Soil Simulant (KLS-1). The new pressure-sinkage model was constructed by using three different sizes of flat plate diameters of the bevameter. The newly proposed model was compared successfully with other models for validation purposes.
