Code-reuse attacks are very dangerous in various systems. This is because they do not inject malicious codes into target systems, but reuse the instruction sequences in executable files or libraries of target systems. Moreover, code-reuse attacks could be more harmful to IoT systems in the sense that it may not be easy to devise efficient and effective mechanism for code-reuse attack detection in resource-restricted IoT devices. In this paper, we propose a detection scheme with using Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence to combat against code-reuse attacks in IoT. Specifically, we detect code-reuse attacks by calculating KL divergence between the probability distributions of the packets that generate from IoT devices and contain code region addresses in memory system and the probability distributions of the packets that come to IoT devices and contain code region addresses in memory system, checking if the computed KL divergence is abnormal.

In this study, measures of distributional similarity such as KL-divergence are applied to cluster documents instead of traditional cosine measure, which is the most prevalent vector similarity measure for document clustering. Three variations of KL-divergence are investigated; Jansen-Shannon divergence, symmetric skew divergence, and minimum skew divergence. In order to verify the contribution of distributional similarities to document clustering, two experiments are designed and carried out on three test collections. In the first experiment the clustering performances of the three divergence measures are compared to that of cosine measure. The result showed that minimum skew divergence outperformed the other divergence measures as well as cosine measure. In the second experiment second-order distributional similarities are calculated with Pearson correlation coefficient from the first-order similarity matrixes. From the result of the second experiment, secondorder distributional similarities were found to improve the overall performance of document clustering. These results suggest that minimum skew divergence must be selected as document vector similarity measure when considering both time and accuracy, and second-order similarity is a good choice for considering clustering accuracy only.

Cognitive radio (CR) is considered one of the most promising next-generation communication systems; it has the ability to sense and make use of vacant channels that are unused by licensed users. Reliable detection of the licensed users' signals is an essential element for a CR network. Cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) is able to offer better sensing performance as compared to individual sensing. The presence of malicious users who falsify sensing data can severely degrade the sensing performance of the CSS scheme. In this paper, we investigate a secure CSS scheme, based on the Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KL-divergence) theory, in order to identify malicious users and mitigate their harmful effect on the sensing performance of CSS in a CR network. The simulation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
Music-similarity computation is crucial in developing music information retrieval systems for browsing and classification. This paper overviews the recently-proposed centroid-model based music retrieval method and applies the distributional similarity measures to the model for retrieval-performance evaluation. Probabilistic distance measures (also called divergence) compute the distance between two probability distributions in a certain sense. In this paper, we consider the alpha divergence in computing distance between two centroid models for music retrieval. The alpha divergence includes the widely-used Kullback-Leibler divergence and Bhattacharyya distance depending on the values of alpha. Experiments were conducted on both genre and singer datasets. We compare the music-retrieval performance of the distributional similarity with that of the vector distances. The experimental results show that the alpha divergence improves the performance of the centroid-model based music retrieval.

We introduce optimization algorithms using Bregman Divergence for solving non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) problems. Bregman divergence is known a generalization of some divergences such as Frobenius norm and KL divergence and etc. Some algorithms can be applicable to not only NMF with Frobenius norm but also NMF with more general Bregman divergence. Matrix Factorization is a popular non-convex optimization problem, for which alternating minimization schemes are mostly used. We develop the Bregman proximal gradient method applicable for all NMF formulated in any Bregman divergences. In the derivation of NMF algorithm for Bregman divergence, we need to use majorization/minimization(MM) for a proper auxiliary function. We present algorithmic aspects of NMF for Bregman divergence by using MM of auxiliary function.

In this paper, we propose a novel video quality function for video processing based on MSSSIM to select an appropriate video processing filter and to accommodate multiple processing filters to each pixel block in a picture frame by a mathematical selection law so as to maintain video quality and to reduce the bitrate of compressed video. In viewpoint of video compression, since the properties of video quality and bitrate is different for each picture of video frames and for each areas in the same frame, it is difficult for the video filter with single property to satisfy the object of increasing video quality and decreasing bitrate. Consequently, to maintain the subjective video quality in spite of decreasing bitrate, we propose the methodology about the MSSSIM as the measure of subjective video quality, the KL-Divergence as the measure of bitrate, and the combination method of those two measurements. Moreover, using the proposed combinatorial measurement, when we use the multiple image filters with mutually different properties as a pre-processing filter for video, we can verify that it is possible to compress video with maintaining the video quality under decreasing the bitrate, as possible.
In this paper, we propose a variational expectation-maximization algorithm that computes posterior probabilities from Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model. The algorithm approximates the intractable posterior distribution of a document term matrix generated from a corpus made up by 50 papers. It approximates the posterior by searching the local optima using lower bound of the true posterior distribution. Moreover, it maximizes the lower bound of the log-likelihood of the true posterior by minimizing the relative entropy of the prior and the posterior distribution known as KL-Divergence. The experimental results indicate that documents clustered to image classification and segmentation are correlated at 0.79 while those clustered to object detection and image segmentation are highly correlated at 0.96. The proposed variational inference algorithm performs efficiently and faster than Gibbs sampling at a computational time of 0.029s.
Embedding a large vocabulary speech recognition system in mobile devices requires a reduced acoustic model obtained by eliminating redundant model parameters. In conventional optimization methods based on the minimum description length (MDL) criterion, a binary Gaussian tree is built at each state of a hidden Markov model by iteratively finding and merging similar mixture components. An optimal subset of the tree nodes is then selected to generate a downsized acoustic model. To obtain a better binary Gaussian tree by improving the process of finding the most similar Gaussian components, this paper proposes a new distance measure that exploits the difference in likelihood values for cases before and after two components are combined. The mixture weight of Gaussian components is also introduced in the component merging step. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms MDL-based optimization using either a Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence or weighted KL divergence measure. The proposed method could also reduce the acoustic model size by 50% with less than a 1.5% increase in error rate compared to a baseline system.
Various time series representation methods have been suggested in order to process time series data efficiently and effectively. SAX is the representative time series representation method combining segmentation and discretization techniques, which has been successfully applied to the time series classification task. But SAX requires a large number of segments in order to represent the meaningful dynamic patterns of time series accurately, since it loss the dynamic property of time series in the course of smoothing the movement of time series. Therefore, this paper suggests a new time series representation method that combines PIPs detection and Persist discretization techniques. The suggested method represents the dynamic movement of high-diemensional time series in a lower dimensional space by detecting PIPs indicating the important inflection points of time series. And it determines the optimal discretizaton ranges by applying self-transition and marginal probabilities distributions to KL divergence measure. It minimizes the information loss in process of the dimensionality reduction. The suggested method enhances the performance of time series classification task by minimizing the information loss in the course of dimensionality reduction.
