  • The local magnitude scales yield in the Southern Korean Peninsula following the Richter's original definition are reviewed. In order to compare the previous $M_L$ scales, the new distance correction term of $M_L$ scale is derived as $-logA_{0}$ = 1.017log(r/17)+0.00028(r-17)2+2.0 using broadband velocity seismograms from 126 local events occured from 2000 to 2004. The attenuation rate of this formula fall between those of western and eastern North America. This result is in nearly accord with the $M_L$ scales proposed by Kim and Park(2002). The differences between various $M_L$ scales is owing to insufficient seismic data not to distribute whole area of Southern Korea

  • Printed circuit boards (PCBs) of the printer are composed of various organic and inorganic compounds as well as metals and alloys. This study was conducted to recover valuable metals from used PCBS by physical separation and leaching. The PCBs was crushed, sieved, classified by zig zag classifier and magnetic constituents were removed by the magnetic separation. The non-magnetic constituents of sizes between 1.2 and 0.6 mm especially containing high quantity of Cu (e.g. 83% on metal base and 31% on total base) were used for the leaching experiment. The effect of the nature and concentration of acids and reaction temperature were investigated. The Cu leaching rate to 98.5% in 2M nitric acid, pulp density 100g/L, $90^{\circ}C$, 300rpm, 1hr leaching.

  • A method to determine the azimuth of a baseline by using the measured apparent directions of the Sun, the measurement time and the latitude and the longitude of the survey point. Comparing the azimuths determined by this method and those determined by the PDGPS(Post Processed Differential GPS) on 3 different baselines, the differences (this method - PDGPS) between the azimuths determined by two methods were -13", +45" and +24" respectively. This method can be used as an effective and rapid tool in cases that require the accuracy lower than 1 arc-min.

  • In the present work, we report a novel microstructure of scalenohedral calcite synthesized without any additives by a simple and ecofriendly carbonation process carried out in a liquid-gas system as well as the effects of experimental conditions on the crystal growth of the scalenohedral calcite phase. Various process parameters, pH, temperature, $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration, $CO_2$ flow rates, and the total volume concentration, were investigated to enhance the sensitivity of the process. The highest average length of the scalenohedral calcite was obtained at pH 6.0, temperature of $45^{\circ}C$, $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration of 0.2M, $CO_2$ flow rate of 80mL/min, and total volume of 1L. The synthesized calcite was characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR to identify the phases and surface morphology.

  • The adsorption of heavy-elements to zeolite has been investigated at various adsorptional condition for purification of waste water. Four heavy elements, Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb, were examined, because they are concerned to the major heavy-element contamination. The adsorption efficiencies are measured at the different conditions such as adsorption times and pHs. The practical adsorption was achived and reaches to maximum within 30 minute by using of 2-g zeolite for 50 mL of heavy-element solution. The overall adsorption efficiencies for Cr and Cu are high and become better at low pH. Cd and Pb have 95% of adsorption ratio and this is lower than other two elements. Cadmium shows an abnormally low adsorption at low pH.

  • Leaching behavior of nickel contained in waste Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor (MLCC) was investigated using a batch reactor. The effects of acid type, acid concentration, leaching temperature, particle size, and reaction time on the extraction of nickel metal from waste MLCC were examined. As a result, 97% of nickel contained in waste MLCC was leached out in 30 min at the temperature of $90^{\circ}C$ under the condition of $HNO_3$ concentration 1N, solid/liquid ratio 5 g/L and particle size $-300/+180{\mu}m$. It was also found that a Jander equation was useful to fit well the leaching rate data. The rate of nickel leaching is controlled by pore diffusion in $BaTiO_3$ layer and has an activation energy of 37.6 kJ/mol (9.0 kcal/mol).

  • Arsenic (As) oxidation followed by precipitation from a high-As(III)-containing leaching solution derived from a sulfidic ore was investigated in this study to remove aqueous As from the solution using activated carbon (AC) with air injection as an oxidant. To obtain the initial leaching solution, a domestic sulfidic ore was leached in a sulfuric acid solution at pH 1 and 50℃ for 95 h, and approximately 7 g/L of Fe and 3 g/L of As were leached out. To determine the effect of the oxidative reaction utilizing AC with air injection, the leaching solution was tested under the following five oxidative conditions at an initial pH of 1 and 90℃ for 72 h: air-only injection; air injection with 1, 5, and 10 w/v% of AC addition; and H2O2 addition. The tests in the presence of both air and AC revealed that the oxidation kinetics and As removal were improved by the reaction between the metallic species and the surface group formed on the AC surface. In addition, the greater the amount of AC added, the better was the reaction efficiency, removing 93-94% of As with more than 5 w/v% of AC addition. Finally, X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the precipitate formed from the oxidative reaction was scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O).

  • Chemical components of water, chemical and isotopic compositions of extractable gases were analyzed to characterize the properties of the natural gases which are dissolved in ground water in the Pohang area. Amount of total extracted gases ranges from 27 ml/l to 50.1 ml/l. Hydrocarbon gases are composed of methane ($27{\~}376,420 ppm$) and ethane ($19{\~}127 ppm$). Amount of total hydrocarbon gases is related to the lithology and geological factors around the reservoir. Quantity of hydrocarbon gases tends to increase in the Tertiary reservoirs and in the reservoirs where the Tertiary formations are thick enough. According to the relationship between hydrocarbon gases and total solids in the ground water, it is believed that the hydrocarbon gases were dissolved in the Tertiary formation water. Based on the methane content ($>99.9\%$) and isotopic composition (${\delta}C^{13};-73.1\%_{\circ}{\~}-43.22\%_{\circ}$), we interpret the gases to be of predominantly biogenic origin which were generated by the methanogenic bacterial processes under the low temperature and anoxic conditions.

  • Cementation and solvent extraction processes were studied to separate nickel and iron ions from the $H_2SO_4$ leaching solution with 47 g/L $Fe(Fe^{2+}/Fe^{3+}=1.03),$, 23.5 g/L Ni and 0.90M $H_2SO_4$ which leached from Fe-Ni alloy. Iron powder was used as a reducing agent for the cementation of Ni ion from the leaching solution. The reduction percentage of Ni ion was $17{\sim}20%$ by adding 4 times stoichiometric amount of iron powder at $60{\sim}80$. This may result from the fact that the cementation of Ni ion occurred after the reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ to $Fe^{2+}$ and the neutralization of $H_2SO_4$ with iron powder. The cementation process was proved to be unfeasible for the separation/recovery of Ni ion from the leaching solution including $Fe^{3+}$ as a major component. $Fe^{2+}$ present in the leaching solution was converted to $Fe^{3+}$ for solvent extraction of Fe ion using D2EHPA in kerosene as a extractant. The oxidation of $Fe^{2+}$ to $Fe^{3+}$ was completed by the addition of 1.2 times stoichiometric amount of 35% $H_2SO_4$. 99.6% $Fe^{3+}$ was extracted from the leaching solution (23.5 g/L $Fe^{3+}$) by 4 stages cross-current extraction using 20 vol.% D2EHPA in kerosene. $NiSO_4$ solution with 98.5% purity was recovered from the $H_2SO_4$ leaching solution of scrapped Fe-Ni alloy.

  • In this study, we attempted to separate and recover Cu from low-grade copper ore by a hydrometallurgical process. The leaching sample obtained after crushing and sieving by 0.355 mm of low-grade copper ore contained 1.5% Cu, 4.7% Fe, 1.0% Mn, and 0.3% Zn. The Cu in the oxide ore was very well leached into sulfuric acid and 97% Cu leaching efficiency was achieved at 80℃ and 3 M sulfuric acid (H2SO4). From the leaching solution, Cu was separated by solvent extraction from Fe, Mn, and Zn using LIX984N. The separation tendency between Cu and other metals was confirmed through the distribution ratio and separation factor. By plotting the McCabe-Thiele Diagram, the optimum condition for recovering Cu is 5 vol.% LIX984N, 2-stage counter-current solvent extraction, and an O/A ratio of 0.5. Using this method, 99% of the Cu was extracted and a CuSO4 solution was finally obtained that contained 1.6 g/L Cu after the stripping process using 2 M H2SO4.
